Fashion Fun : Bold Statement Rings

    by Claire

Make an everyday outfit pop with an affordable statement ring. Go the Rachel Zoe route with a fierce lion, opt for a hip hop edge with a two finger joint, or get girly with a resin flowered bauble.

Put a ring on it with these fun options:

    Which ring would you rock?

    Style Verdict: Clogs

    by Claire

Louis Vuitton and Chanel both reintroduced clogs to the fashion scene in their Spring/Summer 2010 runway collections, with Louis Vuitton parading the shoes with feathers and fur, and Chanel sticking to more traditional fair:

No matter how presented, it seems the houses were set on making the early 90’s shoe fly for 2010–and to be honest, I’ve seen quite a few fashionistas clopping around in clogs:

The look has filtered down to mass retailers, with footwear designers like Jeffrey Campbell, Steve Madden, and Sam Edelman offering versions starting at $125:

I used to own a pair of clogs back in the day, and can admit that the style offers both height and comfort. And it seems as if they would be a good alternative to say…a flip flop on a ‘down’ day.
But then again, no one can deny the way a sharp stiletto can make a leg look. Clogs, on the other hand, are indisputably…unsexy.
What do you think? Would you rock a clog?

Black History Fashion Trend: Air Force Ones

    by Danielle

    Good day, Fashion Bombers!

Danielle here putting down the makeup brushes and lipsticks to take you way back to 1982 when the original Nike Air Force One (aka “uptowns”) first debuted.

In 1982, I was about a year old and the hip-hop scene was exploding from its origins in the late 1970s. Burgeoning hip-hoppers (or b-boys so I sound less corny) were defining what would now be seen as classic hip-hop style. Items like Kangols, tracksuits, and gold chains were becoming popular, and of course no outfit was complete without the shoes (“It’s gotta be the shoes!” © Lords of the Underground–”Chief Rocka”)

That same year, Nike designer Bruce Kilgore created “Air Force 1″ making it the first basketball shoe to use the Nike Air technology.

Throughout history the shoes have been remixed and updated. 1987 saw the introduction of Air Force 2; 1988 welcomed the Air Force 3 (the most popular of all versions); and Air Force STS (or Air Force 4) and Air Force 5 debuted in 1989 and 1990 respectively.

The allure of Air Force Ones was cemented by the legion of basketball stars who rocked the white-on-white sneakers that varied in style from low to mid to high tops and eventually came in over 1700 color variations. And of course, who can forget the catchy chorus of rapper Nelly’s ode to the 1s in 2002’s “Air Force Ones” :

I said give me two pair/I need two pair/So I can get to stompin’ in my air force ones/Stompin’ in my air force ones
Great. Now the song is stuck in my head.

Sales of the sneakers have turned out to be a pretty, pretty good pay day for the folks at Nike. The sneaker alone generates an estimated $800 million USD in revenue each year. Yes, EIGHT HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS a year. In revenue. From sneakers. From one KIND of sneaker. Sheesh. Isn’t that the GDP of a small country?

Anyway, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the beloved kicks, Nike launched Air Force XXV in 2007. I’m not a sneaker-nista but can imagine someone getting stabbed while waiting in line for those. A commercial for the Air Force XXV included LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Shawn Marion, Rasheed Wallace, Tony Parker, Jermaine O’Neal, Amar’e Stoudemire, Chris Paul, Paul Pierce, and music by rapper Juelz Santana.

While still riding on high revenues and our community’s love for sneakers, Nike debuted Air Force 09 last year.

Since Air Force Ones are highly customizable (I had a friend who once had a business that hand-painted custom designs on them), I want to hear how you rocked your 1s. Did you replace the laces? What did you rock them with? Bless me with those memories in the comments.

Black History Fashion Trend: Reebok Freestyle Hi-Tops aka 54-11’s

    by Claire

A true 80’s urbanista would never be caught on the block without a pair of Reebok Hi-Tops highlighted by multicolored slouch socks:

As one of the first athletic shoes created for women, Reebok Freestyle Hi Tops were beloved by everyone from cheerleaders to corporate ladies looking for comfort, and came in a myriad of colors including green, orange, pink, blue, white, black, red, and yellow. The shoes accounted for more than half of Reebok’s sales in 1984, and of course were a favorite of the hip hop community.

Freestyles were dubbed “5411″’s by urban trendsetters because the shoes, which typically retailed for $49.99, cost $54.11 including tax (this was mainly true for New York City).

To cement their popularity, stars featured 54-11’s in songs, with DMX rapping, “Knew she was a thug/ ‘Cuz when I met her she had her scarf on/ 54-11, size 7 in girls /Baby face, would look nice/ She was 11 with curls.

Thus launched a new term and trend in the black community. Nowadays, you can find many reincarnations of the classic by designers like Married to the Mob and Telfar, among others:

    They’re still fly, no?
What are some of your fave 54-11 memories?

Do I Smell a Trend? Red Eyeshadow/Eyeliner for Fall 2010

    by Danielle

Recently, we spotted Rihanna at the 2009 American Music Awards rocking an edgy and daring red eyeliner look on her bottom lash line (shown above). Many makeup-nistas were out on a hung jury over whether or not this look was hot. Well it seems as if the so Hard singer was onto something because the look also popped up recently at both the Cushine Et Ochs and the Altuzarra Fall 2010 shows at NY Fashion Week.

While I think the look is hot, I also think it’s a look best rocked by one under 25 going to a party or whatever it is you young people do these days (meanwhile I’m 28). And that’s IF you can find a red eyeshadow that doesn’t irritate your eyes. Much to the dismay of red lovers everywhere, the dye used to make red makeup causes a bad reaction to many. But if you’re so inclined to try the trend anyway, when picking a red that works for you, remember the darker your skin the deeper and brighter you can go. Lighter skin folks should watch out for deep blood reds unless you like the “I poked myself in the eye” look.

Reds to try: Make Up For Ever Eyeshadows in Scarlet 99 (matte red), Matte Cold Red 158, Dark Raspberry 58 (vibrant matte raspberry), Red Copper 61 (maroon shimmer), and Crimson 64 (matte cranberry); Sephora Colorful Mono Eyeshadow in Geisha Kiss 80 (matte brick red); Illamasqua Powder Eye Shadow in Angst (matte cranberry); MAC Eyeshadows in Red Brick Orange Red (Matte) or Passionate Real mid-tone red (Matte).

To do: 1. Keep the rest of your eye makeup simple. Apply a shadow primer like Urban Decay Primer Potion on your lids and then dust an eyeshadow similar to your skin color on the lid then use a color 2-3 shades lighter than that for your brow bone area. 2. Using a pencil brush like MAC #219, apply your red shadow carefully along the outer rim of your lower lash line. If you want to get a bit more edgy, line your upper lash line in red as well and then smudge it with a brush like MAC #239 or with a Q-tip to smoke it out. Clean up any fall out with makeup remover (or plain old baby oil) and a Q-tip. 3. Apply 2-3 coats of mascara and you’re done.

Now—would YOU rock this look? Tell me in the comments!

    Celebrity Trend : Bold Jackets

    by Claire

Fashion Bomb stars have cozied up to a new trend: bold jackets.
Whether strong shouldered, silver, patterned, or simply bright, they’re piling on statement blazers to set off their looks:

Former Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams topped off a gray tank top and black harem pants with a silver and black diamond patterned jacket.

Retro style star Solange Knowles sported two different bold looks to attend the 44th Annual Super Bowl Friday Night Lights party and the launch of New Tide Plus Febreeze Fresh Sport in Miami.

And Queen Latifah wore a striped silver and black jacket with a black tank and jeans to perform at the Super Bowl.

If you want to make the look your own, remember to keep the rest of your outfit simple so your jacket can shine. Start with these choices:
