New Designer Spotlight: Justin Ritchie for Clean Clothing Group (CCG)

    by Vuitton

Summer’s here in full swing, and I, for one, couldn’t be more excited.  That means it’s to break out the tanks and tees, but not the ones your grandparents wear…unless they’re full of spunk.

Enter artist, designer and fellow Bahamian, Justin Ritchie.

A recent alumnus of University of Miami, he took everything he learned in figure drawing and 3-D art and integrated it into his line. He says,” I wanted to share my art with the world via apparel, while simultaneously creating something new and original.”

Drawing inspiration from music, especially 70’s funk, 80’s synth, and 90’s grunge, he tries to incorporate this into his line by keeping it simple and clean, yet loud and bold.

Like anything you see here?  Trust me.  This is only the tip of the iceberg.  For much more, check out the clothing line’s website here.

Vogue Africa Creator Mario Epanya Responds to Critics

    by Claire

    Hey!
So a few weeks ago we published covers of a fictional Vogue Africa created by photographer and makeup artist Mario Epanya. His work has sparked tons of discussion, so I decided to get in touch to ask about his background and motivations for creating what has become a somewhat controversial concept.

The Cameroon native grew up around fashion, as his mother was a designer and boutique owner. He was always very artistic–he painted as a teenager–and ultimately moved to Paris in 2000. He started his career assisting at fashion shows and doing makeup for small magazines before securing a job at cosmetics company Dessange. He said, “I was the company’s main makeup artist and hairstylist. I worked with stars like Denzel Washington, Jade Jagger, and Elijah Wood.” In 2007, he quit Dessange to start his own hair, makeup, and photography company, Mario Epanya Productions.

Regarding his idea for Vogue Africa, he said, “I read my first Vogue in 1979 and have been buying it regularly ever since. I always felt that African creativity was not represented.”
He continued, “I also realized that black women in Western magazines didn’t correspond to African beauty. Women in Western magazines frequently had light skin, fine features, and long hair. Today I think black women want to re-appropriate their image and don’t want others to dictate what is beautiful and what isn’t. Beauty is diverse and today we aspire to more diversity of choice. So when I got the idea to create the covers, I said, why not?”

While the covers are breathtaking–and beautiful–several people take issue with Mario’s idea, saying that Africa doesn’t need Vogue to feel validated. According to Uduak of Nigerian Ladybrille Magazine, “Africa has always been and will remain fashionable. African fashion and lifestyle focused magazines have emerged, including Arise and Canoe, offering both Western and African fashion consumers more options. Nevertheless, many Africans and African designers still feel the need for Western validation via VOGUE Africa and similar Western fashion brands, rather than wholeheartedly supporting their own with their pocket book and patronage. African customers will buy VOGUE Africa, despite an African renaissance, before they do their own. It is the reality and psyche of Africans and sadly is what it is. Ultimately, and this is no slippery slope, African publishing businesses in the continent will be forced out of business.”

In response Mario says, “Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. Africa is behind in a number of sectors, including politics, chemistry, research, I could go on. I’m sorry, but we can’t enter into war with the people who created the internet, cell phones, and airplanes. No, I didn’t create the Ipad, life saving vaccines, or Google but I’m happy for the things that contribute to our lives so that the world advances. I’m not at war with the West…and I think that instead of living in the rancor of a difficult past between the races, we should look at how we can exchange between people.”

“…I love Vogue, champagne, cars, computers, and all the things that modern life bring, and I have no desire to enter into counter productive debates that won’t change anything in everyday life. I think it would suit certain people well if things didn’t evolve. Globalization is real and it’s time for Africa to sit at the table and propose what we can do instead of waiting to hear what we have to or should do. I say YES to Vogue Africa if it will permit dynamic creation in African fashion and YES to Vogue Africa if it would allow Africans to re-appropriate their identity, and YES 10 million times to Vogue Africa. Long live an open minded African continent that continues to make its voice heard. Amen.”

In the future Mario plans to launch his own magazine and also purchase the license to create Vogue Africa himself. He’s more than capable.

It seems the big debate is whether Africa should focus on building its own, or if the continent should embrace ‘globalization’ and align themselves with a powerful brand. There’s another argument: that Africa should put energy into development and building its economy over producing a fashion magazine. Mario responds, “Brazil has its favellas, as does India. And they have their own Vogue editions. I’ll leave you to reflect on that…”
    Bombshells, what say you?

You Should Know: Malik So Chic

    by Claire

So if you’ve been tuning in to the show High Society on the CW, you’ve undoubtedly caught glimpses of party promoter and stylist Malik So Chic:

Though new to the reality TV scene, Malik has been on the New York party circuit for years, throwing notoriously hip parties at hotspot Bungalow 8. From his oversized bedazzled glasses to his eyelashes and fierce stare, he is endlessly alluring and unquestionably hip. The Fashion Bomb had to ring him up to find out more about him!

Malik so Chic (née Malik Sterling) grew up in Ohio, and received a fashion merchandising degree from Clark Atlanta University. After one year stints at the London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins, he landed an assistant styling gig at V Magazine. He said, “Working at V magazine, I was able to access high profile events. I was always someone who loved to go out, party, and be in the mix. I networked my butt off wherever I was, and was eventually asked to host a party at Bunglaow 8.”

His fun fetes were a huge success, and known for bringing a diverse mix of people together. He explains, “It was the first time drag queens, celebrities, socialites, and transexuals were in the same room. That’s how people knew me.” Thankfully he was able to parlay his notoriety into a role alongside Tinsley Mortimer on the CW show High Society, which comes on after America’s Next Top Model on Wednesdays. He says, ” It was a lot of fun working on the project. It was really crazy, and really dramatic, but I think it’s a really good show.”

Since Malik is a staple on the fashion scene, I had to ask him about his top five wardrobe must haves! He said, “I love my rhinestone glasses, necklaces by young designer Gabriel Shuldiner, my Jean-Michel Cazabat riding boots, fun t-shirts by Christopher Lee Sauvé, and my MAC cosmetics (black eyeliner, iridescent bronzing pots, babydoll blush, and NW45 concealer studio fix).” OK!

And for you girls out there on the party scene, I had to get some style tips for you! He said, “It’s always about the shoes. I don’t think you have to spend hundreds of dollars on shoes. But I think it has to be the right shoe for you. If the shoe is wrong, then the whole outfit’s over. If you can’t get a good shoe, just do a black pump.” But what about the Maino, ‘cheap shoe’ tirade? He says, “If you go to Steve Madden, they have great, inexpensive shoes. I think you can get something on a budget. It’s not about price, it’s about quality. It’s about swagger, not about cost.” Well said!

    More Steve Madden…
    ShopStyle

Keep an eye peeled for more of Malik’s hot projects (he’s working on a sunglasses and jewelry line), and of course tune in to the CW on Wednesdays at 9:30 to see him on High Society.

He is and will continue to be one to watch!

How to Break into Fashion : A-Morir by Kerin Rose

    by Claire

    Hey Guys!
Today we’re going to take a slight break from our Fashion Week show reviews and Real Style shots to give you a bit of old school Breaking into Fashion goodness! We recently caught up with uber sunglass designer, Kerin Rose, creator of the industry’s hottest, most sought after shades:

If you don’t know who Kerin Rose is, you must not be reading the Fashion Bomb!! The 26-year-old Long Island native uses Swarovski crystals, spikes, chains, lace, studs and pearls to decorate sunglasses worn by Rihanna, Lady GaGa, Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Snoop Dogg, Fergie, Nicki Minaj, Estelle, Cassie, Jazmine Sullivan, and Kid Sister.

Kerin’s grind literally doesn’t stop, and she’s a heck of a multi-tasker! As she was hand making a series of sunglasses, she also talked to us on the phone, sharing her story and offering a bit of advice to you aspiring creatives. Ready?

The NYU alum always had a penchant for embellishments. She said, “I used to bedazzle all of my cell phones. I have my cell phones from 2000 when I was 17 and there are crystals all over them! I thought I was going to get a new phone and bought all these crystals for it. Turns out I didn’t get a new phone, so I had a bunch of leftover crystals. I broke the one pair of glasses I owned and said,’ Why don’t I bedazzle some glasses?’”

What happened seemingly by accident actually turned out to be her calling card. “I wore my glasses around and people kept asking me where I got them. People would scream at me from across the street asking about my sunglasses! When we talked, they’d ask me where they could get them. I told them I made them in my house, and they asked why I didn’t sell them.”

She continues, “I was about to go to school to get my Master’s, but was working at a boutique before I started school. The shop agreed to let me sell my shades there. I’d put four out and they’d be gone in days.” Her first celebrity client was Mariah Carey, whose stylist plucked Kerin’s Bizet sunglasses for the video “My Love.”
After Mariah, several other celebrities followed suit, most notably Rihanna who wore Kerin’s Barracuda Sunglasses for the internationally acclaimed video, ‘Run this Town”:

Aside from Rihanna, designers have also flocked to Kerin for specialized accessories–Rose designed an exclusive collection for Project Runway alum Christian Siriano’s recent runway show:

Of course Rose’s designs have spawned copycats who have started their own movements thanks to lower priced, yet strikingly similar frames. Kerin welcomes competition, but says, “I don’t mind if you’re going to do your own thing, but don’t do a shitty version of my thing. I don’t like people taking credit for my work.”

She adds, “ I pay super attention to the quality of work. My sunglasses may be expensive, but I use high quality supplies. And the people who have come out and done stuff don’t put the same care and energy into their work. The material is not great. It’s lower quality. I’ve seen and held the item in my hand. Do your thing, but give me some competition.”

For you future designers, she advises, “Stick to what you know. Do what you’re good at. There was a time when I was daydreaming about making T-shirts and they weren’t that great. Do you. I’m really good at playing with glitter, so I followed my talent.”

She continues, “Don’t limit yourself because it prevents great opportunities from coming your way. And if you’re going to do it, do it right or don’t do it at all.”

In conclusion, she offered a bit of unconventional advice. Be nice. She says, “If you’re a good person with good intentions then good things will come to you.” So true!
Purchase A-Morir by Kerin Rose sunglasses at www.a-morir.com or at select retailers like Karmaloop.com
Also stay tuned for her future projects, which include collaborations with graffiti artist Claw Money and Converse.
What do you think of today’s Breaking into Fashion subject?

My Favorite Things : Queen Latifah

    by Claire

    Hi Guys!
So as we’re reporting on the latest news, style, and trends, we’re always working behind the scenes to bring you exclusive celebrity interviews!

Today the absolutely lovely Queen Latifah took some time out of her super busy schedule to give you Bombshells the scoop on a few of her fashion and beauty faves:

The New Jersey native is seen as a style icon for curvaceous women, and says, “I wear clothes I feel comfortable in and it’s something I encourage all women to do.”

She continues, “…Choose colors that make you happy. I tend to favor classic pieces over trendy because they will last a lifetime.” Regarding her favorite wardrobe items, she says, “I of course love my sweat suits to bike in and lounge around. I love my Burberry trench because it’s stylish and practical. I also love Ralph Lauren pencil skirts because they make me feel like a sexy school teacher.”

The Queen is known for her flawless skin, so we also asked her to indulge a few beauty secrets! She said, “I always make sure to wear sunscreen when I’m out in the sun. I also prefer using mineral makeup products to keep my skin from looking shiny-COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Minerals Pressed Powder is my favorite because the coverage lasts all day and goes on even all around my face. Of course, when I’m not working I like to wear very little makeup so I can give my skin a break.”

For those who would like similar skin, Queen says, “I always make sure to wash my makeup off before going to bed-also, it’s important to wear SPF and opt for a thick moisturizer, especially in the winter.” She adds, “I cannot live without a great gloss and bronzer. My favorite is COVERGIRL ShineBlast Lip Gloss and COVERGIRL Queen Collection Natural Hue Minerals Bronzer. I also have to wear a fragrance every day-my new scent Queen is perfect for all occasions.”

The rapper, singer, and actress who admits to still getting starstruck when meeting Prince closes by saying, “ If you feel great your confidence is bound to shine through.” Thanks Queen!
Latifah, Diddy, and Pharrel are planning a benefit concert for Haiti on BET, MTV, and VH1 February 5th. Tune in for the two hour telethon featuring performances by Wyclef, Mary J Blige, Drake, Robin Thicke, and more.

My Favorite Things : The Cast of Buppies

    by Claire

    Hey Guys!

Not sure if you’ve heard the buzz, but there’s a new show on BET.com called Buppies:

    Buppies BET

The hip webisodes follows the lives of five ‘Buppies’ or Black Yuppies–Priscilla a Magazine Editor, Shaka a Rapper/Corporate Lawyer , Eliot a Sports Agent, Kourtney a rap music heiress, and Quinci an Entertainment Publicist–as they navigate The Young Black Hollywood scene and try to stay out of trouble.

Today the cast of Buppies was fabulous enough to talk to The Fashion Bomb about a few of their favorite things, and dish a bit about their character’s styles on the show!

First, up, we have Tatyana Ali, who plays Quinci:

    Tatyana Ali Buppies Quinci

She says, “My character, Quinci Allen, and I both have a penchant for shoes and accessories.  We also share an interest in bright colors–bold blues, purples, yellows and deep reds.” As a classic chic fashionista, Tatyana adds, “Whereas Quinci is more apt to follow trends, I’m interested in the shape, fit and proportions of clothes and then I like to mix them all together–big a-line coats, reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn, with a great pair of skinny jeans and heels or boots.  Generally, I like my clothes to reflect my personality: fun, sexy and about business.” Tatyana’s lists handbags by Dominique Cohen, Pastry Cotton Leggings, Gray Chloé Knee High Boots, American Apparel Deep V Tee’s, and her grandmother’s thin gold Citizen’s watch among her favorite things:

Next up, we have Robin Thede, who plays prissy Priscilla:

    Robin Thede Priscilla Buppies

About her character, Robin says, “She’s the black woman in a corset! Priscilla is very tailored and loves all things Chanel.” By contrast Robin is more subdued, saying, “I love Tulle clothing–it’s a local LA designer that has phenomenal everyday wear with thoughtful touches (silk lining, bows and flouncy hemlines) and super affordable prices. I adore Marc Jacobs for handbags and fun dresses in wild patterns. David Meister and Jenny Packham have ridiculously gorgeous dresses from fancy daywear to red carpet stunners. And with Kate Moss for Top Shop you can always find cute pieces in her line that make a statement:”

Chanté Frierson plays Kourtney, the around the way Rap Heiress:

    Kourtney Buppies

While Kourtney is, “hood chic,” and likes Baby Phat and the hottest Louis Vuitton bag, Chanté is more of a Bebe girl. She says, “I love clothes that are made to fit all types of women well so I make my one stop shop BEBE. They make great high fashion clothes that fit curves well. Also they make amazing workout gear, hand bags and jewelry.” She continues, “For shoes I  can’t go wrong with finding something cute, trendy and affordable at Aldo.  I’m a simple girl, so when I’m looking a for a pump or classic boot, Aldo has it all.” And like a true Buppie, she says, “I hate to leave the house without my MAC lip glass. Love to keep the lips shiny!”

Ernest Wadell is Shaka, the high powered attorney with dreams of being the next hot rapper:

    Shaka Buppies

He says that Shaka is, “all about urban luxe.” Ernest himself prefers to go for more of a hipster vibe, rocking whatever feels comfortable for him. He says, “I dress according to how I feel while I think Shaka dresses according to how he’ll be seen.” A champion of functionality and durability, Ernest counts Quoddy trial mocassins, Zip ups by A.P.C, Diesel Jeans, Odin Boutique Button Ups, Chuck Tailors, and Dunhill Wallets amongst his favorite things:

And lastly Preston Davis plays Eliot, Priscilla’s boyfriend:

    Eliot Buppies BET

Preston says that Eliot is, “Preppy, tailored, and conservative.  He loves Thomas Pink and Hugo Boss on a relaxed day.” As for his personal style, Preston says, “My style is the exact opposite of controlled and conservative! I call my style “hii-fancy” for hippie meets fancy. I’m a little bit of everything and can wear virtually anything I want and make it look good.” His wardrobe must haves include his vintage red cowboy boots, blue Levi’s, and his Panamanian handmade Lavendar bag:

Intrigued? Check out the premiere episode here:
