Fashion Bomb Style Inspiration Inspires Real Style

So the goal of Style Inspirations is to present an idea so you can go forth and make the look your own.
Reader Tyi did just that, saying, “I had an interview today for the first time in three years! I’ve shed over 55 lbs since then so my old suits (thankfully) are too big now. I’m in the medical administrative field so I wanted to spruce up my look. Your “What To Wear To an Interview….” post inspired my interview look today! This was the 2nd interview, as I would always throw on a blazer for the first. I got tons of compliments while I was there. Thanks Claire ;-)”

“I got my top from JC Penney, scarf from Chico’s, skirt, stockings & belt from Express, shoes from Aldos, and a mini portfolio briefcase from Wilson’s Leather (8 years old). Finding a neck piece similar to the ones on your site was practically impossible. I went through hell and high water to find the one at Chicos.”

The picture is a little blurry, but from what I can see you look fabulous!

Style Inspiration: What to Wear to Your Bridal Shower

A reader by the name of ‘Soon to be Mrs. C,‘ wrote in saying, “I’m getting married in September and my bridal shower is in July. What does one wear to one’s own bridal shower??”
Great question! I recently attended one of my good friend’s bridal showers and she looked positively lovely in a one shoulder fuchsia knee length cocktail and gray Vivienne Westwood x Melissa heels. Her makeup and hair were whipped to the gods–perfect for greeting guests! So my only advice to you (aside from looking pretty) would be that if you wear a dress or a skirt, make sure it’s long enough. My friend opened her presents while sitting on a chair, surrounded by people who were both on couches and on the floor. You don’t want to flash all your friends as you sit in their midst opening gifts! Add some kick to your ensemble with a pair of fun shoes and a funky bag to boot:

Style Inspiration: What to Wear to Your 10 Year Class Reunion

Michele says, “Please Claire help me! My 10 Year class reunion will be coming up in August and I can’t decide what to where. It is a 3 day event but I am mainly concerned about the banquet. I want to look very well put together and HOT! I am usually a take it safe kind of girl so I want to step outside the box and turn heads! (but in a good way) I am not afraid of colors and I would love something that showed off my figure. Thanks in advance for your help!”
Ah Michele. You sound like my kind of gal. Not one to sidle to the safe (and predictable) LBD, you want to shine and stand apart from the crowd. The rules are: Don’t look like you’re trying too hard in a frothy confection more suited for a black tie gala (or a too tight dress more appropriate for the club!). Do wear something flattering in a color that pops, played up by statement accessories.

The first option is for the slightly saucy, who wants to look pretty yet not ruffle too many feathers. The key pieces: A Catherine Malandrino Draped silk-jersey wrap-effect dress, Christian Louboutin New Declic woodstock pumps, and a vintage Chanel purse. Option 2 is for someone slightly more adventurous:

The standout pieces are the lime green Roksanda Ilincic Olya twisted wool-crepe dress and Yves Saint Laurent Large Belle De Jour Clutch in Acid. I can almost guarantee that noone else will be rocking with the lime green. If you can pull it off, rock it!

Style Inspiration: What to Wear to a Company Outing

Teri says, “ I have to go to the lake with my law firm next weekend and I need outfit ideas. Personally, I want to wear a bikini because I love bikinis, but the other girls in my summer class think we should probably go a little more conservative.”
Ah, Teri. I cringe at the thought of going to corporate outings. Sure, you’re supposed to be relaxed, but you can’t truly flaunt your personality–what if you offend the ‘big guys’? I’m with your summer class in saying it’s probably not a good idea to wear a bikini, especially for a day out on the lake with a law firm. You can still look sultry in a one piece–I actually think you should be as covered up as possible!

For this Style Inspiration, I chose a simple striped J.Crew tank, Theory shorts, Marni sunnies, and your choice of YSL wedges or Carvela flats . If you must swim, slip on a cute yet covered halter neck style, like this Alexander McQueen swimsuit.

Style Inspiration: What to Wear to the Essence Music Festival

Hey Nikki! I’ve actually never been to the Essence Music Festival (and unfortunately don’t think I’m going this year), but I presume that as for any summer concert, your first priorities are comfort and style. Stand apart from the crowd in an eye-catching pink dress like this option by Mara Hoffman in silk chiffon. Add a bit of flair with a funky necklace and colored sunnies.

Style Inspiration: What to Wear to A Greek Party

Sammie writes, “I’m going to a Greek event this weekend, as in a sorority and fraternity event. But I’m not in a sorority just going out to have a good time. I wanted some outfit ideas. I hope to not wear any sorority colors together like Pink & Green, Red & White, Blue & Yellow, Blue & White, etc.”

In times like these when you can’t wear a lot of basic color combinations, go with a neutral print. That way, no one will mistake you for a greek. If you want to wear colors that might be co-opted by a certain organization, make sure they are put together so they are clearly non greek. That is, if you are dying to wear that pink blouse, wear a blue skirt. If you have that fly red pair of shorts that you haven’t had a chance to wear, throw on a yellow tank. Don’t forget to have fun with it!

Wardrobe Query: What to Pack for a 3 Month Internship Abroad

Zoe writes, “I’ll be doing a 3-month apparel internship in Bangladesh this summer. I have no clue as to what to wear/pack. Please help!”

You lucky girl! How exciting that you’re going to Bangladesh! One thing I’m sure you know about the country is that it is hot… super hot. So make sure when you pack, you choose breathable, cool fabrics like cotton and linen. You also need to be aware of the Bengali culture, which I imagine is a bit more conservative when it comes to the amount of skin a woman can show. Pack shorts (make sure they’re a modest length), but also invest in some long, flowy skirts. They’re romantic and modest, but most of all, they keep you cool. Also, don’t be afraid to embrace the bold color and jewel tones of Southeast Asia. I wouldn’t pack too much jewelry, and only necessary accessories, since you will probably want to buy so much gorgeous jewelry in Bangladesh!
