Happy Friday!
So while in the BVI, I spent lots of time with Taraji P. Henson, and couldn’t help but marvel at how fabulously fit she was!

I had to ask her about her fitness and diet routine. Read on below:

FBD: How many days a week do you tend to work out?
TPH: When I have the perfect week, I try to work out 6 days. Working out is hugely important to me because it makes me feel physically and mentally empowered and allows me to eat a normal diet. When I exercise it helps keep my mind clear and makes me feel calm and happy.

FBD: What is your preferred form of exercise?
TPH: My routine is a full range of motion. My trainer helps me switch it up so I don’t get bored. I attend a class called Cardio Barre and I work out with my personal trainer two or three times a week as well.

FDB: Do you adhere to any special diet?
TPH: Let me be very clear: I love to eat, entertain, and go out with my friends! But I still eat healthy. Don’t try to put bread on the table when I am out to dinner, but I would love a glass of Pinot Noir.

FBD: What do you typically eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Any snacks?
TPH: I love to cook and I am very good at it. A good breakfast is a fabulous way to start the day and this usually means eggs, some fruit and maybe a little chicken sausage. I am a major grilled salmon and grilled vegetable girl for lunch or dinner. And I must have the crunch of a salad every day. My go to meal, however, is soup, and I am obsessed with 9021Pho which luckily is across the street from my manger’s office. I’m not a big snack person and I don’t eat desserts.

Well, there you have it! I’ll have to try 9021Pho next time I’m in LA!
What do you think of Taraji P’s tips?
And how do you stay in shape?

  1. I hit the gym 4 days a week. I do cardio and strength training every workout. I try to hit a different muscle group (ex. legs on Monday, arms & chest on Tues, etc). Diet is the most important. I TRY to avoid unnatural sugar (eating fruit is my sugar source) and I don’t drink soda at all. I o.d. on water.

I also look for soreness when I workout. It’s not a good workout unless I’m sore the next day. Soreness = muscle growth. :)

  2. Glad you posted this Claire…I too noticed how amazing she looked and couldn’t help but wonder what her regimine was. She looks amazing, I am so crushing right now. I hit the gym this morning and I feel much better. Hubby even noticed a pep in my morning routine. Stay fit and fabulous ladies! xoxo

  3. Nice. I’ve been doing yoga or some sort of weight training (very light) everyday. I found that I only did a few reps and I was sore the next day. I sometimes wonder how hard in the gym you really need to go. I think diet is way more important.

Anyone else doing corset training as well?

  4. Love this!! I would love to see more posts on topics like this. As a Black woman, it is always great to know what other black women do to get or stay in shape. Keep up the good work Claire!

  5. In awe! She always looks great! Hey @Sheila….I work out 4 days a week with a trainer and DO the corset training every day. To date, I’ve lost 4 inches on my waist and have moved from the first rung of hooks to the second, to a smaller size. Not to mention that my posture has also improved.

  6. I work out 3-4 days a week, with my workouts varying from 20 minutes to an hour. Since my goal is to save money and not have to keep up with appearances, (translation: feeling free to look a hot sweaty mismatched mess ALONE, lol) I do my exercising in the house using my wide range category DVD collection and on occasion, my treadmill. As far as diet is concerned, I drink a lot of water, limit my white foods and sweets and watch my portions.

  7. Love this and she looks amazing!!! Great tips and motivational too. I exercise 5 times a week and eat well.

  8. hey @Claire can you do more post like these where you feature ordinary fly fit black girls and get tips from them. We need more fitness articles on here. This is very encouraging to see how other black women maintain their bodies.
