Happy Tuesday!
Yesterday, I was honored to attend the Studio Museum in Harlem Gala:
The event, which champions artists of African-American descent, brimmed over with notables from the fashion, beauty, entertainment, and political world. It was my first Gala, so I was happy to be there!
Take a look at a few fly attendees:
Erika Munro and Debbie Lorenzo
A stunning beauty in a Givenchy Tribal Print Jersey Gown
Designer Tracy Reese and Dr. Rosemarie Ingleton
Me with 12 Years a Slave Director Steve McQueen
Studio Museum Director and Chief Curator Thelma Golden in Duro Olowu
Oprah’s Adam Glassman, Bethann Hardison, Mike, and Grace Mahary
Lovely Fashion Bomb Readers and Museum Board Members
Fashion Photographer Bill Cunningham
Beauties in B Michael America and Christian Dior
I attended as a guest and not press, so didn’t bring Pierre with me inside (hence the Iphone photos–my bad!).
Instead of go with a typical gown, I decided to take a risk in a white Topshop tuxedo anchored by a sequined shirt.
Stuart Weitzman nudist sandals and silver rings completed my look.
Gotta admit: I ultimately felt a tad underdressed!
But I have another gala coming up next month (I’m on Ebony Magazine’s 2014 Power 100 List, and have been invited to attend their gala in LA on November 19th).
The search is on for the perfect Gala dress!
Until then, thoughts on my choice?

*Many thanks to Susan!
I love the look. It was a breathe of fresh air from the expected. But that sequin blouse tho! xo
nice ensemble…but underdressed for the event-as u stated.
Yeah…not the proper look for a gala. Would’ve been a nice look for anything else though.
Co-sign with everyone else, but I do like that sequin blouse.
nice look but no for a gala , very underdressed.
Cute look, but I’m sure you’ll look fab at the Ebony gala!
Not appropriate for gala but ur ensemble is popping the sequins top add interest
Very cute for another occasion.
I love the sequin blouse. I’m sure for your upcoming gala you will be stunning.
We all miss sometimes. Knock em out in LA champ!
Claire, I love how you are attending these dreamy events and hobnobbing with some interesting folks. I always love to see the evolution of a person, there is not a more beautiful thing to see than a person rise and come into the fullness of their being.
Don’t bother yourself, the event is already in the past, I do appreciate your honesty though. I cannot wait to see your wonderful gala dress for the next event. Keep in mind that party and award season is coming up quickly, so you will have to pick out a few dresses.
Claire, the look is fab and very fashion forward. I have been to a gala or two in my day. I must say that your look is not in any way inappropriate, especially around a creative, philanthropic set.
In fact, it is a breath of fresh air from the expected ball gown, of which not everyone wears at these events either. I have been to both creative and corporate functions; the dress length varies, especially in NYC.
Enjoy your search for the perfect gown that really is the fun part…shopping.
So many fabulous people you were able to rub elbows with. Fantastic.
Great look Claire..Love it. Perfect for the event. Love the shoes on you too. Good job!
Thumbs up…from the toes up!
That Givenchy Tribal Print Jersey Gown has me weak at the knees.
You look great but it ultimately looks like a suit, not a tux.
You and Steve McQueen look good together. Is he single? Get your maaaaaan girl! Lol
I’m the make-up artist for Kim Powell, she is the beauty in the last photo wearing that gorgeous orange and yellow dress! She’s an amazing photographer based out of Paris with such a daring but totally organic sense of style. Just thought you should know who she is!
I liked it a lot Claire. I like how you went against the grain with a suit. Super Chic! Good luck finding the perfect dress.
I’ve been to this event many times…it is one of my favorite! Unfortunately the pics don’t quite do it justice but that’s ok :-).
Thanks for sharing
Congratulations on making Ebony’s list! Looking forward to all the pix from the event.
