Happy Monday!
Last night, I was invited by Lisa Price and Carol’s Daughter to a screening of Ava DuVernay’s new movie, Selma.

Starring Oprah Winfrey, Common, Cuba Gooding Junior, and newcomer David Oyelowo, the movie is a biopic about Martin Luther King, Jr., and focuses on his Civil Rights activism, specifically his marches in Selma, Alabama. Poignant, powerful, and timely, the movie shows how far we’ve come, yet how far we still have to go. The similarities between the 1960’s, where blacks were killed with no consequence, to now, are frankly, alarming. The movie was eye opening, but shows that there is power in people galvanizing together to create change. We have the power!

SELMA

At any rate, Carol’s Daughter founder Lisa Price invited a slew of fashionable gals to view the screening as well, including Cosmo’s Shiona Turini, Teen Vogue’s Elaine Welteroth, Glamour’s Rajni Jacques, and my fellow blogger boo, Karen from Where did U Get That.

After the screening, we hopped by the after party at the New York Public Library. Though I hoped to catch a snap with Lady O, she was nowhere to be found, though I did grab pix with Common, Tessa Thompson (who plays Diane Nash in the film and wore a gorgeous Rodarte dress), Cuba Gooding Junior, and the fabulous Tia Mowry-Hardrict (she was wearing Stone Cold Fox):

For the occasion, I wore a BCBG Jaxon Tiered fringed jacket with my white Victoria’s Secret pencil skirt.

I wore my Borsalino hat because my hair is a mess…! LOL. And I’m sure you’re relieved I wore a coat, namely my Theory Cassius topper. I completed with Christian Louboutin So Kate’s and Berkshire sheer hose in Tan de Sol.

I couldn’t urge you more to go see Selma. Like 12 Years a Slave, it documents a very painful period in American history, but knowing and reflecting on the past is imperative to understanding today, and advocating for a better future.
Selma hits theaters January 9th, 2015. Mark your calendars and support!

  1. Miss Claire, honey! I NEVER comment, (even though I try to keep up on a daily), just because I’m more of a behind-the-scenes kinda gal, but ma’am you ROCKED every ounce of this get-up here! Geez! I couldn’t not comment! This definitely deserves the time it took to write this! You’re doing it & I absolutely LOVE it! Fierce on every level!

    P.S.

Can I have that whole fit when you’re finished with it?! #speakingitintoexistence LOL

    xoxo

  2. Claire I didn’t like this look – it seems to busy or not cohesive IDK but for me it didn’t execute well – maybe a different jacket/shirt with the hat.

  3. Claire, girl, you slayed! And those tights are amazing! Looks like you have nothing on, you could give Mother ‘Retha a few tips ;)

Carmen Ejogo’s dress is beautiful. Tia rocked her look as well. Her braids are life! Common, boo, you look damn goodt!

  4. I liked your outfit Claire. Well put together.
Common, looking super dapper. Yes please.
The director Ava D. looks gorge.
Neicy Nash please sit yo retired ass down. All that cleavage and belly is not fab.
Gayle wears the exact dress and shoe combo at every event. The only difference is the color. Stylist please ma’am.
Miss Lisa, I love me some Shea soufflé. Please have yo husband massage some onto those feet and elevate them fo the rest of the day.

    Bago gyal out!

  5. Claire, definitely one of your best looks. I would lose the extra coat. the pink top was just fine on its own
