A few weeks ago, the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced that they were making some groundbreaking changes to New York Fashion Week. In addition, we’re all aware of how influential the CFDA is when it comes to helping aspiring fashion talent. So, the organization’s next move should come as no surprise!

With Cadillac serving as a proud partner, the CFDA recently announced their new venture simply known as Retail LabRetail Lab is aimed towards granting up-an-coming designers with their own temporary retail stores.

According to Vogue, “the initiative will allow six designers to install a custom retail pop-up shop on the ground floor of Cadillac’s global headquarters in New York City, at 330 Hudson Street, for a three-month period each. In addition to the space, Cadillac will provide a $75,000 grant to each participating designer to cover the costs of displays, marketing, and wholesale buys“.

The CFDA is confident that this type of program will give designers a unique chance to work directly with consumers while diving deep into the world of visual merchandising and interior design. Some of the program’s advisory board includes revered fashion veterans such as Reed Krakoff, Julie Gilhart and Simon Doonan. The inaugural “lab” is set to launch in July with designer Timo Weiland as the lucky first pick.

Cadillac has agreed to a three-year commitment with the CFDA; therefore, opening the door to countless designers to gain experience within running a brick-and-mortar business. Other candidates who are interested in this program can apply for the remaining spots on the CFDA’s website here.

“The CFDA is always looking for meaningful programs that help strengthen the impact of American fashion,” expresses CFDA President Steven Kolb. “Every designer aspires to a freestanding retail experience that allows them to tell their brand story and connect directly with consumers. Cadillac’s commitment to the industry will help the selected designers make this a reality.
