Jazmine Sullivan may not be society’s standard aesthetic of beauty, but she’s definitely a beauty we had to feature for our #BCW segment! Many of us remember the songful soulstress when she first stepped on the scene with “Need You Bad” and every revenge-seeking girlfriend’s song, “Bust Your Windows“. After success from her first album, it had seemed for a time that Sullivan had fallen off from the music map or people had begun to question her relevance. However, Jazmine Sullivan stands for so much more than just music. She models the beauty within all women, to be fearlessly and effortlessly dedicated to their craft and community. With the recent commercial success of her latest album, Reality Show, she’s also been a widely-outspoken artist on gender and race discrimination and unfair treatment in the music industry, celebrating the contributions of Black women in the music industry, the Flint Michigan Crisis, and most recently, added herself to the Ebony March 2016 cover where she alongside Gabi Fresh, Chrisette Michelle, and Danielle Brooks showed the world that black women are beautiful at ANY size. What is more beautiful than that?
She’s also been much more on the scene, showing us all confidence abounds from within and that WE have the power to also utilize our skills and voices to bring political and social awareness to issues that plague our communities.
