Fashion Bombshell of the Day: Bonang from South Africa

    by Claire

Today we’re getting a bit of international flair with Bonang from South Africa:

    FBDO-022013-Bonang from South Africa
She was submitted by reader Chazzy, who wrote, “I am submitting this fabulous fashionista as a Fashion Bombshell.”

    bonang matheba3
“…She is building a name for herself as a successful entrepreneur.”

    bonang matheba
” I love her looks and she is an inspiration to many young African ladies.”

    bonang matheba2
” She just goes to show that Africa is not just veld and animals, but has so much beauty.”

    bonang matheba4
    “Her style is vibrant…”

    “Classy…”

Hot! She is indeed a beauty, with a sweet, chic style to boot. Might we have another Queen B on our hands?

Hmmm. Before I even began to read the comments I was thinking how weird it was for someone to nominate a someone who is not their friend of family member for Fashion Bombshell of the Day. Like, do these people even know that their pics are being published here? Even in the past where people (other than Claire) have nominated well known bloggers as Bombshells– is kind of weird to me. I haven’t even gone to her site yet and it is clear that this young woman is very well known in the fashion industry in Africa. Nonetheless, I voted ok style. The pics definitely got better toward the end.

people please, when you say not enough african , it shows your ignorance people from the southern african do not do the batik, java print whatever u wanna call them. You find that type of dressing in west and east africa. In you go to South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana people dress just like this with no so called african print in sight.. So please lets get educated, when it comes to Africa. SSShm The reason why its because of colonialism where for centuries africans were not allowed to embrace their culture and forced to dress like westerners. Hence the culture was lost. a little history for the ignorant among us

@African lady, i too am african. And its funny because all the countries you’ve mentioned i have been to. I was born in Malawi, went to primary school there, secondary school and university in Botswana at UB, took pleanty of trips to Joburg and Zimbabwe, been to Mozambique etc. So i am not in any shape way or form ignorant about the fashion culture of Africa below the equator. There was no offense intended when i said not enough africa. its simply an observation on my part. in my travels i have noted that every region has its own vibe its own thing. i live in the states now and its very easy for me to tell the difference in a person thats from the south versus from the east cost or the west cosy. its in the way they dress they incorporate a bit of where they come from. So when it comes to prints batswana do wear prints borrowed from German print fabric, called leteise. Zimbabwe and Malawi.. head wraps and printed wrap arounds we call it in my language “chitenje”.. but the general thread that runs through Africa is infact color full print, beads….i mean the list goes on. There are many african designers and many real life women that manage to marry tradional attire and western fashion, they can and do coexist beautifully. Blaming colonization for not embracing our culture today is in itself ignorant. we are no longer colonized and the fact that you are getting offended because i have simply noted the lack of traditional influence in this young ladys fashion choices tells me you are still in colonized state of mine.

      Anywho back to fashion.

@smav its late but got to point out a few facts i am from zimbabwe so i know what i am taking about. I am well travelled myself too. In fact was just in zim/ S.A this January. Yes people in the southern parts of Africa where head wraps as a symbol of humility to funerals, church not as a fashion statement the way its done in the east or west Africa. The head wraps and the scarves chitenges are not as colorful as the ones in East or west Africa because they were not meant as a fashion piece but to cover your self up. When i mentioned Colonialism is a fact and its part of our history to explain why some African country seem more westernized than most. If you are going to be honest especially from malawi if you are a young girl do you wear african prints going on a date or you rock your jeans and tees. If u tell me otherwise u are lying especially from the Southern africa. When i went back to zim, S.A i have noticed that people are going back to the african print because its fashionable right now but that has never been so traditionally. So before u spew ignorance about not african enough, you really need to visit South Africa. Go to Joburg or soweto or even visit zimbabwe. By the way mental colonialsm still exist ;Read your books girl. U you have been in the States for too long and now trying to put everybody in a box the way hollywood wants you too.

I love her versatility! She can be casual and also very chic! I also love her necklaces! I could definitely use some assistance in the accessories department!
