How to Break into Fashion: Teen Vogue Accessories Director Shiona Turini

    by Claire

Today we have another fabulous addition to our “Breaking into Fashion” series with Teen Vogue accessories director Shiona Turini:

Born and raised in Bermuda, the Hampton University graduate has been a style connoisseur since her days of bucking the dress code at her uber conservative high school (she insisted on wearing cuffed high-waisted wide legged pants instead of the required skirts). Now at the helm of the accessories department at Teen Vogue, she gives readers the chance to ogle everything from Prada to Payless in her vibrant spreads. She took a few moments out of her schedule to tell you guys a bit about her story and how you, too, can one day catapult to the upper echelons of a national magazine.

Though Shiona always had a flair for style, she didn’t pursue fashion as a career until after college. She says, “I graduated with absolutely NO fashion experience – not one internship. So, when I [finished my studies] and moved to New York, I interned at Yves Saint Laurent in the PR Department. I was there for almost a year as a full time intern but freelanced often at KCD (during the shows and when publicists would travel to Europe). Finally, a position opened up and I was hired at Yves Saint Laurent as the PR Assistant.”

She continues, “At YSL I covered womens, mens, and celebrity, and I was there for almost 3 years. I knew I needed to make a move to grow, and was looking into positions at other fashion houses when the Accessories Director at W Magazine contacted me to see if I was interested in an Accessories Editor position. I’d never worked at a magazine before and I had never even entertained the thought – but it ended up being a great move for me. “

“At W, I handled the shoe and bag and belt markets so I was definitely well versed in luxury accessories. At Teen Vogue, I still handle the shoe and bag markets, but I oversee the entire accessories department which includes myself, an amazing editor, and an assistant.”

A typical day for Turini starts with a 4-10 mile run (she’s currently training for the New York City Marathon), followed by market appointments, showroom visits, and product pulls. She says, “My job is like a constant treasure hunt – looking for the best pieces for each shoot while also making sure I’m always searching for something fresh and new.” In the evening, she heads out for previews or parties, all the while keeping her twitter followers engaged with her Shoe of the Day tweets and instagrams of instances from her fabulous life.

Shiona showcasing a pair of hot Louis Vuitton Sandals

A stellar career demands stellar style, so Shiona pumps up her everyday wardrobe with a few key must haves. She says, “[My mantra is] HEELS HEELS AND MORE HEELS. I’m a shoe girl, always have been. I truly don’t think you can ever have too many pairs of shoes. Unfortunately I wasn’t blown away by the F/W shoes so plan to revitalize my current shoe wardrobe. But, I did love the Vuitton Mary Janes from F/W and am currently obsessed with a pair of suede and snakeskin Balenciaga sandals.”

She adds, “I am also really partial to the statement bag, why be safe, when you can go with a bold print? Proenza Schouler has an adorable ikat printed PS1 in blue. Cold weather obviously means some outwear, and since sometimes, that’s the only part of your outfit that people will see, I say splurge on something special. I have a great sleeveless cape that I can’t get enough of from DKNY, and my Burberry leather jacket is in heavy rotation already. And bracelets are always a must have for me – I typically skip all other jewelry so I can go crazy with the wrists.”

“My right side might be permanently weighed down by the stack on my wrist. In general, I’m always wearing pieces from Eddie Borgo, Fenton Fallon and two gold bangles my mother gave me when I was 16.” Hot!

In terms of advice to you up and comers, Shiona emphasizes having thick skin–and an outgoing personality. She says, “I have always been a really tough person and a go getter. I am definitely not shy. I think that this has really helped me in my career. Sometimes, you need to be pushy in fashion and sometimes you have to accept the fact that you’re going to get pushed around. Maintaining a balance between these two extremes is really the only way I know how to handle my job.

She continues, “This industry, and the job market in general, is pretty tough. You need to be resilient and try not to take anything personally. “

In conclusion, she says, “Stay strong! If you are confident that fashion is for you, stick with it. Make good contacts and great impressions and something amazing will happen for you. Also, be prepared for the demanding nature of this business. It is easy to be distracted by the glitz and glamour of fashion, but it’s no joke. Everyone works really hard to get to where they are, so don’t underestimate the lengths it takes to land a “dream job.” Don’t be in such a rush to get the perfect job. My career is a departure from where I started, but I definitely wouldn’t have it any other way. Learn everything you can and always be willing to work very hard no matter what.” Wise words, indeed.

What do you think of our latest Breaking into Fashion interview?

**A lot of you had follow up questions for Ms. Shiona, and she was kind enough to answer!
Whitney said, “I’m a college graduate with no fashion experience but looking to break into the industry. What I wanted to know is how did she keep herself financially afloat while interning at YSL and freelancing for KCD? Also, how was she able to land those opportunities in the beginning w/o the fashion experience?”
Shiona replied, “It’s a pretty long story but I DID have internship experience in travel PR and was offered a job (which I turned down) at a great agency. Even though the Travel PR Rep thought I was crazy for turning down the position, she introduced me to the PR Manager at YSL, and I did a project on her as part of my graduation requirements while at Hampton University. To get the YSL internship I more or less harassed the PR manager… But in a nice way of course! She told me ‘no’ a few times, but I was persistent without being annoying. To be honest I showed up even after she told me the internship program was full. I wouldn’t recommend that at all, but it worked for me at that time. “

“…Since I always knew I wanted to move to NY, I made sure I set an internship start date a few months after graduation. During that time I SAVED every single penny and worked a few jobs – in a dentist office, baby sitting, data entry – no job was too small. I knew that I would need all the money I could get in order to stay afloat in NY, so I lived at home and just worked and saved for about 4 months. When I got to NY I spent some time sleeping on friend couches, walked EVERYWHERE – did whatever I could to make my money last. Thankfully, my parents helped me out with necessities, but there were times I couldn’t even pay the $2 fee for the train (I once hopped it, got a ticket, and basically begged the police officer to have some pity on an unpaid intern. He clearly didn’t care!). It was tough, but those days were some of my favorite memories in NYC. The amazing thing about the city is that you can have a champagne lifestyle on a coca cola budget. “

“A lot of interns are unpaid, and have to work part time in retail etc to be able to intern in fashion. You have to find what works for you. There are also a lot of dorm style housing that are safe and affordable right in the city. You have to sacrifice and save, but it’s worth it in the end. If you really want it, you just have to find ways to make it happen. “
    Hope that helps!

Twitterfeed: Nicole Richie, Kim Kardashian, Tamera Mowry, and More Celebrate Halloween

    by Jihan

    Happy Halloween!
Though the big day is today, lots of our favorite stars celebrated this past weekend, and took to Twitter to show off their costumes and (of course) the Halloween parties we weren’t invited to:

@NicoleRichie dusted off that old Juicy jumpsuit, and celebrated as Jenny From The Block. What? No butt padding?

@KimKardashian looked deliciously toxic as Poison Ivy:

Sessilee Lopez (@TheRealSessilee) put her makeup skills to work, painting her face in the style of day-of-the-dead skulls:

    Not bad!

@AngelaSimmons dressed up as Wonder Woman and posed with a friend:

@EdwardEnninful hit up two Halloween bashes this weekend, attending one as Alexander McQueen‘s Spring 2010 collection, complete with PJ’s made by Sarah Burton. Jealous!

He went to the other as some sort of mustachioed gadfly:

Tamera Mowry-Housely (@TameraMowryTwo) channeled Dangerous Liasons and rocked out like a courtesan with her homegirls:

Christine Teigen (@ChrissyTeigen) reminisced about Halloweens past:

…and funny lady @MindyKaling looked positively adorable as a giraffe:

That’s all, folks! What did you guys dress up as this weekend? Is anyone going to bite the bullet tomorrow morning and party tonight?

Weekend Hot! or Hmm…: Solange Knowles, Tracee Ellis Ross, Vanessa and Angela Simmons, and More!

    by Danielle

    Happy Monday and Happy Halloween!
Hope you all had lovely weekends and that your trick-or-treat bags were filled with delicious snacks ;)

Let’s see how some celebs spent the weekend, eh? Let’s go…

    Over in Manhattan…

Solange Knowles was spotted on her way to a DJ gig. Had I known she would be there, I would have taken my chances with security and jacked her for that coral car coat, yellow blouse, and what I can see of that fierce gold necklace. I dig the leg lengthening attributes of her nude pumps, but can’t say I’m on board with the pointy toe.

On the makeup tip, with such bold colors in her outfit, a little touch of color on the cheeks or even some bronzer could have taken this up a notch. Otherwise she seems a little washed out, but overall she still looks HOT!

Nicole Scherzinger was spotted out in London by the BBC Radio 1 studios with a blend of mixed prints via her fitted shift dress and heel-less platform booties. Now while this chick could wear a garbage bag and still look good, the pairing of the shoes and dress just doesn’t quite hit it. There isn’t anything like a similar print or color that ties the different prints together and the shoe design practically screams for a more simple dress.

Meanwhile in the land of “She Never Ages”…

Nicole Murphy served face, hair, body, and outfit. She’s smirking like “Yeah, I know I’m hot, too”…lol.

Khloe Kardashian was spotted filming scenes for “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”, and I got to give this girl her 10s for head to toe fabulousness. The printed mini dress with slight fishtail hem and over the knee boots are slaying while hair and makeup are the cherry on top. HOT!

    Over in Atlanta…

Birthday girl Tracee Ellis Ross hit the Watch the Throne after party and looks like she’s telling someone “No, it’s MY birthday“. I love her Dolce & Gabbana dress, but her Azzedine Alaia ankle booties cut off her length. Her signature curls were popping though.

    Over in LA…

Both Angela and Vanessa Simmons hit the L.A. scene to create their own signature milkshake at Millions of Milkshakes (who by the way needs to come to NYC STAT). I love both of these girls like they were my play cousins. I’m digging the bangs on Angela! Cute Mickey Mouse shirt, too.

Vanessa rocked the side parted, Jessica Rabbit-esque look. I’m loving the golden brown color against her complexion. She looks good—though I would have put more makeup on both sisters since they’re being photographed. I’m sure they looked radiant in person, but the camera can show things that aren’t noticeable face-to-face.

Not so sure how I feel about Vanessa’s outfit. All of the pieces individually are cute, but all together seems a little rushed. She would have rocked it by either switching out the tank for a solid color or tossing the sheer cardigan for a structured blazer.

And finally Flo-Rida and Pleasure P hit the Vegas scene in possible early drafts of the Versace for H&M collection. These guys might want to put those arms down because this ain’t it. They clearly didn’t peep how you guys roasted Drake last week for sporting a similar ensemble. *sigh*

That rounds it out! Whose look is your favorite this week?

    ~Danielle

Splurge: Tracee Ellis Ross’s Watch the Throne After Party Dolce & Gabbana Animal Print Mini Sheath Dress and Azzedine Alaïa Lace-up calf hair platform boots

    by Claire

Tracee Ellis Ross turned it up and turned it out in Atlanta this past weekend, celebrating the Watch the Throne concert afterparty at Reign nightclub in a $819 Dolce & Gabbana Animal Print Mini Sheath Dress accessorized by $1,995 Azzedine Alaïa Lace-up calf hair platform boots:

The Dolce & Gabbana stunner has a cream and black animal print, form-fitting tailored silhouette, and a round neckline. Her gray and black spotted calf hair lace-up ankle boots boast a 5 inch heel and a thick rubber tractor sole:

The shoes are hot, but are perhaps too casual for such a sultry dress:

As always, you can’t go wrong with a sexy black pump…!
At any rate, it looks like she was having lots of fun, questionable shoe choices aside:

If you want, nay, need her look, get it here:

The Fashion Bomb News Breakdown: André Leon Talley’s SCAD Exhibit, Temperly’s “Latino” Pants, and Anna Wintour’s Influence in Black America

    by Jihan

    • André Leon Talley is preparing his first exhibit in the gallery bearing his namesake at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

The exhibit will feature pieces from designers like Zac Posen, Oscar de la Renta, and Diane Von Furstenberg. And just in case your olfactory senses feel left out, Mr. Talley’s got that covered as well: “I want fragrance wafting through the ventilation system. Either Oscar de la Renta’s Live in Love, or Diane von Furstenberg’s Diane.” (NYTimes)

    • Because all Latinas have brown skin, Temperely London thought it appropriate to name a pair of brown leather pants “Latino Leather Trousers.” The name of the pants has since been changed to “Lantino,” which in Latin means “latin,” so it’s pretty safe to say that Temperly just doesn’t give a damn. (Styleite)

    • It’s high time Anna Wintour had her “The Help” moment, and Keli Goff over at Loop 21 will be damned if she doesn’t facilitate it. In an article listing the “Most Influential White Americans in Black America,” Goff cites Ms. Wintour, crediting her for “a number of covers featuring a diverse array of black women, among them Oprah Winfrey and First Lady Michelle Obama. Wintour also made history by featuring black women on the cover of the magazine’s September issue, first placing supermodel Naomi Campbell on the cover in 1988 (which Wintour has admitted sparked controversy) and later placing Halle Berry on the cover in 2010. Wintour is also credited with helping to establish black editors Andre Leon Talley and Edward Enninful as two of the most influential people in an industry not known for its diversity.” I wouldn’t dare diminish the moves Ms. Wintour has made to represent blacks in fashion. But if 12 covers in 23 years and 2 editors (one of which it’s safe to say the average black American has (sadly) probably never heard of) makes her one of the most influential white Americans to black American culture, then I guess Ms. Goff thinks it doesn’t take much to influence black folks. But, as they say, baby steps! (Loop21)

    • Thandie Newton, however, isn’t so impressed with the diversity of Vogue‘s covergirls: “Don’t get me started on black people being on the cover of big magazines. It’s so preposterous. I mean, I’ve been on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar four times; I’ve been on the cover of InStyle four times, but Vogue, not once. And people say to me, I mean literally, people have said to me, ‘What have you got against Vogue that you don’t want to be on their cover?’ And I just laugh. “ So she doesn’t cry. Ms. Newton blames the racial mood in the United States for this lack of diversity: “They [Vogue] don’t feel the need to represent because it doesn’t make any sense to them. It’s just baffling to me, but as usual America will dictate the ways things go and a magazine like Vogue will just follow America,” she said. “But it’s like, don’t you want to trail blaze?” While she makes good points, I think it’s important to note that Rihanna was the first black female in three years to cover British Vogue, and American Vogue has had at least four since 2008. (TVOne)

    • Vogue had a couple of designers carve pumpkins for them. While many decided against making Jack-o-Lanterns (Nicholas Kirkwood, naturally, carved shoes into his pumpkins), this bespectacled, corncob pipe puffing gourd by eyewear designer Moss Lipow is my favorite. (Vogue)
