Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson attended today’s Presidential Inauguration wearing a judicial collar adorned with cowrie shells, a powerful symbol of wealth, protection, and femininity.
These shells also carry deep connections to African heritage, spirituality, and the life-giving energy of the ocean, making her choice both meaningful and significant.
Reader @ewedzesiwo.symbols added, “Cowries have lots of spiritual and literal significance to Africans. When Africans moved from Barter trade, some of them used cowries as a form currency. So it is seen as a sign of wealth. Some Eveawo (Ewes) call it Agaga and Akan Twi call it Sedie. That is why the name of the currency of Ghana is called Ghana Cedi. It is also used in divination. For example Afa divination of Eveawo and Yorubas. It is also a symbol of protection, good luck among other benefits.” What do you think?
On Martin Luther King Day 2025 , Donald J Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. The irony was not lost on those with any knowledge of American History. Anger, disappointment, and dismay were palpable from Democrats, even those in the fashion community.
Designer Adam Lippes, who dressed Melania Trump for the event, initially turned off the comments on his post about the New First Lady, whose custom Lippes look was topped off by an Eric Javits hat and Manolo Blahnik pumps. After his initial ‘no comments’ policy, the brand opened the floodgates, but immediately deleted any murmurs of negativity.
Such was not the case for Oscar de la Renta, who dressed Ivanka Trump for pre -Inaugration festivities and Vice President Vance’s wife, Usha Vance, for the big day.
@summerbrudd wrote, “Wow you dressed the entire group. Well another brand to avoid,” while @pdxjill typed, “So what, ODLR is the exclusive brand of MAGA republicans now?” @itssanupama wrote, “time to drop off my ODLR dresses at the consignment store!”
“Fashion is non political and non partisan,”wrote Andrea Nunez. Many other commenters understood the motivation of designers who would find it hard not to dress women on such a large world stage. From a a business perspective this would be considered a great opportunity to help propel their brand.
What do you think? Will you still be supporting Adam Lippes and Oscar de la Renta?

LA based designer Monaco Colombia is one brand who will be showing with us during September Fashion Week in New York! Where does the name come from? Brand owner Danielle Oliver says, “My parents met and fell in love in Monaco. My father is also Colombian and Nigerian. I took the two best parts of me and this love child was created. “
Danielle’s love for fashion started when she was a child. She says, “I’ve always been very particular about what I wanted to wear– my grandmother couldn’t afford what I liked, so I would style my own cute, baggy ensemble and make something from nothing. When I got my first apparel job in my early twenties, I was able to see how a garment factory was operated. From there, I knew I wanted to express my own creativity and love of fabrics through my designs. “
She continues, “I’ve been in the apparel industry for 25 years working for companies such as True Religion, Seven Jeans, BCBG to name a few; from production, fabric buyer and design. My earliest childhood memory has to be from my middle school yearbook when a fellow student wrote that I was best dressed.”
For The Bomb Fashion Show, we can expect Monaco Colombia’s signature baggy meets classic style. Oliver explains, “We’re drawing upon timeless influences from Colombian and European cultures. This new collection is sourced and manufactured to reflect a dynamic fusion of the two, resulting in a unique and original aesthetic that you must experience. With innovation, style and quality as our driving force, each and every item will be designed to deliver an unparalleled effect.”
Monaco Colombia is showing at the Bomb Fashion Show because, “FBD has given the African American community a voice and expression in the fashion world. Claire is conquering the status quo making all of us black designers feel “bomb”. She epitomizes what every woman aspires to be: a go-getter, from crashing fashion shows to now sitting front row is a remarkable feat. ” Indeed!
From her head, down to her toes, Beyoncé is iced out, and the mega superstar debuted a custom ‘Cowboy Carter’ 8X* spiderweb turquoise and diamond grill created by Gabby Elan Jewelry.
While sticking out her tongue as she fearlessly looked at a snake head-on, her turquoise gemstones glistened in her mouth.
Traditionally, grills have always been gold or platinum, and gained popularity early on in Hip-Hop from rappers like Flavor Flav, and Daddy Kane in the 1980’s.
Now grills have become so mainstream that celebrities like Madonna, Kanye West and A$AP Rocky are able to customize their grills to their liking with specialty shapes, colors and diamonds.
Beyonce’s grill was such a fashion statement that it garnered over 16K likes on Fashion Bomb daily Instagram page. Bey’s grill is also perhaps a symbol of her wealth and status as we’re sure it cost her a nice penny with all the diamonds encrusted.
There’s a new black owned fur brand in town! Get into the styles of FGM Bespoke, created by visionary Tiara Peach:
Her custom coats are beloved by celebs like Latto, Jackie Aina, Yandy Smith, and more! Sustainable and luxurious, these aren’t your grandmother’s furs!
Consummate glam girl Jackie Aina hit the slopes of Aspen in a bicolor vest. Like most FGM furs, she didn’t have to do much, layering the statement making piece over all black, and completing her look with an Hermes Birkin bag in snow white.
Jennifer Williams knows a thing or two about fashion, and she only goes for the best! Her Valerie Chinchilla shrug is the perfect light piece to layer on less chilly days.
Yandy Smith is a huge fan of FGM, but the coat she wore for an MTV promo shoot was the most impactful. Who else is living for her Rainbow Kiki bolero coat?
Chloe Bailey has been on a press tour in New York, stepping out in some of the hottest looks we’ve seen her in to date.
Most recently, she was captured walking into the SiriusXM studios in a fabulous nude ensemble, styled by Jason Rembert.
The “Boy Bye” singer wore a full Retrofete look that consisted of the brands $1,198 Nadine leather trench coat , and the matching $478 mini skirt. Her nude 178 Piper top was form fitting, and paired exceptionally well with her sheer tights.
Made from 100% lambskin, and characterized with a faux fur collar, her trench belted at the waist and looked so luxe on Chloe.
She opted for cream accessories including knee high boots, and a matching handbag. Her white tinted shades complimented her lined ombre lip, and her hoop earrings gave her a downtown chic vibe.
