The breakout star of FX’s Pose, and up and coming fashion trailblazer Billy Porter has been pushing the envelope with his genderless approach and jaw-dropping outfits. It is very apparent that his inspiration is derived heavily, or at least in part from his involvement in the theatre. Billy’s unique brand of androgynous and opulent looks are reminiscent of 1980’s New York City nightlife. One of his most recent ostentatiously chic looks, in a video clip that he posted on Instagram with a “Juicy” by Notorious B.I.G. musical backdrop, was his most interesting yet.
While exiting the Conde Nast 2020 Summit after being interviewed by Vogue Magazine’s Anna Wintour, Billy walked fiercely in a Fall ’19 Thom Browne trompe l’oeil dress, which gave the illusion he was wearing a varsity jacket over a cardigan and a cricket sweater. This would seem almost paradoxical to some, given the classic, masculine hip-hop music playing as he walked along. His spazzolato leather “Mr. Thom” bag was the icing on the cake. It is this confident swagger and self-awareness that also made The Notorious B.I.G. the megastar that he was, which begs the question, are these two figures at opposite sides of a spectrum really that different?
