Show Review: Milly’s Fall 2016 Ready-to-Wear

Upon entering Pier 59 Studios, I was taken back by the chicness of the venue and the beauty of the set. The ceiling above the catwalk was (literally) dripping with blue flowing lights and the picturesque attendees just added to the overall sophistication of the show’s ambiance.

Aside from the 20 degree temps in these New York streets, Milly certainly brought the heat!

Founder and creative director Michelle Smith ‘s vision was consistent with previous Milly collections – she didn’t stray too far from the familiarity of minimal looks; however, this presentation paid homage to women everywhere who tend to cover themselves during these brutal winter months.

The designer’s goal was to create looks that combined both soft and sheer femininity with pieces that are ideal throughout the cooler months. Smith’s vision (simply known as “The Intimacy of Winter“) provided loads of sartorial inspiration which featured an impressive use of turtlenecks, two-piece swimsuits, bandeaus and even the timeless cocktail dress.

In addition to extensive layering and clean silhouettes, Smith also managed to incorporate a few “edgier” effects which included faux-fur trimmed handbags, statement sweaters and whimsical capes.

It was completely refreshing to see the models prance down the runway in frocks that the everyday woman could wear. I mean, each showcased piece serves as a firm foundation for any wardrobe and Milly did an amazing job of proving that winterizing your look can still be fun and unpredictable!

The use of dark yet bold florals also injected a bit of pizazz into the looks.

Honestly, I don’t know exactly what it was but I can actually see some of our street style favorites (think Julia Sarr-Jamois, Solange Knowles and Miranda Kerr) slaying in these looks! I believe it’s to mix of simplicity coupled with the genius styling that takes Milly’s fall collection to a completely different level.
