Assoulin picked up the CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear just a few months ago and the assortment at hand shows exactly why. Staged in an emptied West Village public pool, the looks are seductive in hue and irresistible in playfulness.
From a blush pink one-shoulder gown that will land its wearer on a Best Dressed list as early as tonight to statement-making earrings that are head turners all on their own, the ensembles are brave: requiring just as much guts and cool from whomever decides to slip into them.
For days out, Assoulin prescribes printed blouses with voluminous backs, roomy tie-front trousers, tops that fall languidly off the shoulders, and striped pleated bottoms which might not be the most flattering for ladies with curves, but will surely be the starter of many a conversation.
For night, it’s all about Assoulin’s signature volume. Ruffled gowns that pull inspiration from traditional flamenco gear, roomy silhouettes that will surely work for Tinseltown’s mommies-to-be, and cutout numbers that speak to the sultry red carpet trend that isn’t going anywhere sometime soon.
Swimwear makes an appearance by way of wrap-around bikini tops layered over classic button-front shirts, one-pieces tucked into pants, and the strings of bikini bottoms peeking through the top of flared trousers.
There isn’t much for the woman who likes simplicity and pared-down fashions, but there is a great deal for the lady who loves bold, unapologetic getups. It is all quite chic and modern and when you have that covered, who needs practicality?
