Yesterday I was invited to a breakfast at Spike Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule office to peruse his latest collaboration with Sprayground:
Yes, the famous film director is delving into fashion with backpacks that represent his undying love for Brooklyn, New York, and his most iconic movies:
Myself and a select group of journalists ogled his $60 Pixel Mars Blackmon backpack, which features a pixelated image of Mars Blackmon from She’s Gotta Have It, infused with orange and blue tones as a nod to the New York Knicks.
His 2nd option, the Spike Lee Patches 2-in-1 bag, has a camo print and patches of the African flag, Brooklyn, 40 Acres and a Mule, and more. The $90 piece can be carried as a briefcase, and has a velour laptop case, a tablet sleeve, and a velour sunglass compartment inside.
Lee, who described his style as comfortable, said, “I am out and about all the time, and my backpack is really a part of everything that I do. I have so many papers, my notebook. So when I went to an event where Sprayground had made a bag with my man Iman Shumpert of the Knicks, I met the guys there. And we began to talk and make it possible to collaborate. This is final product.”
Of course we did more than talk about style! We delved into current events and politics. For the fashionable who want to make a political statement, he recommended participating in protests and also wearing your allegiance on your chest. I couldn’t agree more!
At any rate, if you’re intrigued, reserve your bag here. 40 Acres and a Mule is also hosting a pop up shop this Friday from 5-8pm at 75 South Elliott Place in Fort Greene.
What do you think?
*I was inspired by our Weekend Style Inspiration post featuring all those yummy all gray looks, so paired a Christopher Fischer Mohair Turtleneck with Frame Jeans and my Gianvito Rossi Thigh Highs:
It was raining cats and dogs all day, so I covered my hair with a Rag & Bone Fedora.
