Dolce & Gabbana has infused their signature Sicilian aesthetic into a line of hijabs and abayas, earmarked for Muslim women. While each piece is still modest, they are far from plain, using luxurious materials like sheer georgette, satin and lace in addition to floral print and jewel embellishments. Traditional headwear has gone haute couture.

This move is a step in the right direction for Dolce & Gabbana, whose creative directors have been accused in the past of cultural appropriation , and been accused of insensitivity to ‘non traditional’ families.

The Muslim population spends billions on clothing and shoes, so it certainly makes sense to create items for this underserved yet powerful audience.
