5 Tips to Help Transition Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

    by Claire

    Hey Guys!

Though it’s still very much summer here in Georgia, it’s already getting pretty nippy in other parts of the country (and the world)!

If you don’t want to completely ditch your summer wares, we found FIVE ways you can get more mileage by mixing summery separates with cold weather accents!

    Check it:
    1.  Keep your mini, add a boot:

Just because the weather’s colder doesn’t mean you have to fold up your mini skirts and dresses. Take a cue from the ever stylish Kim Kardashian and Rihanna and wear an over-the-knee boot with your favorite thigh skimmer.

    2. Layer your tanks and tees under sweaters and jackets:

There’s nothing more alluring than a pop of color or fun t-shirt under a classic blazer! Let your favorite summer tops go the distance by wearing them under wrap cardigans, soft wool knits or tailored jackets.

    3. Pop on pumps or boots with your favorite capris:

I have very…generous calves, so any help I can get stuffing my pants into knee high boots the better! Capris are the perfect length for close fit knee highs.  And if it’s still pretty hot where you are, you can work a pump with a capri to elegant effect.

    4. Fall in love with leather:

Leather jackets, shorts, and skirts are great transitional pieces. Pop a leather jacket over a t-shirt, or wear leather shorts with your favorite tank. You’ll look edgy and fall ready.

    5. Be courageus! Consider socks with sandals or stockings with shorts:

Don’t want to pack away your sandals or shorts?

Fall runways were aflame with the socks and sandals look and Parisian girls adore the stockings with shorts look. They’re not necessarily ‘trendy,’ but you can work it.

    Take a chance!

And all you leggings lovers can rejoice! Those work all year round.

Do you guys have anything to add?

How to Choose Your Best Colors for Wardrobe and Makeup

    by Danielle

Wanna look your best, save time and money, and with not much effort? Well you can when you pull out your best colors and rock them fiercely. *Tyra smize*

Back in the 80s, having your colors done was a big thing (along with big hair, big shoulder pads, and big ole contoured cheeks). Though styles have changed drastically since then (thankfully) the color theories can still apply today.

Now—why would you want to know what your colors are?

Well, wearing the right colors can help you appear more vibrant, alert, and even younger. The wrong colors can make you appear sickly, older, and can wear you instead of you wearing it.

I’ve put together a crash course on color to assist you with choosing great colors for your own coloring.

Colors have many different characteristics. Because of this anyone can wear any color/hue based on their own characterstics and those of the color.

    Color characteristics:
Hue: the color name (i.e. blue, yellow, red, green, etc.)
Intensity: how bright or muted a color is
Tone: how light or dark a color is
Temperature: how warm, cool, or neutral a color is

    More on temperature…
You’ll know you’re warm toned if: you have a yellow or golden undertone to your skin, your eyes are golden brown or green (or have gold flecks), your veins are green, or you look better in gold than silver.

You’ll know you’re cool toned if: you have a pink or blue undertone to your skin, your eyes are dark brown or blue, your veins are green, or you look better in silver than gold.

You’ll know you’re neutral if: you have neither apparent warm nor cool undertones or you look good in both silver or gold.

Note that undertone has nothing to do with skin tone. Being light or dark skin does not automatically dictate undertone.

We also have color characteristics naturally (in our undertones, hair color, eye color) that help decide which colors look best on us. Anyone can wear any hue, it just has to be the right temperature, intensity, and tone.

Luckily there are also color groupings called seasons that give us a guide as to which colors look best on us. They are:

Winter: your coloring is cool and clear (meaning there’s a high level of contrast between your skin tone and hair color). Look for vivid or icy tones like pure white, navy, emerald green, deep hot pink, true red, bright burgundy, royal blue, charcoal gray, black. Accessorize with silver or platinum.

Celeb examples: Kelly Rowland, Alex Wek, Salma Hayek, Cassie

Summer: your coloring is cool and muted (meaning there’s a low level of contrast between your skin tone and hair color). Look for cool, soft colors, like most blues (including periwinkle, blue-gray and navy), off-white, rosy beige, brown, lavender or pastel pink (with blue undertones). Accessorize with silver, very pale gold or pearls.

Celeb examples: Vanessa Williams, Amber Rose

Spring: your coloring is warm and clear. Look for clear, delicate and bright hues, like creamy beiges, light royal blue, peachy or bright warm pinks, turquoise or aqua, pastel green, golden brown or medium purple. Accessorize with gold or pearls.

Celeb examples: Jada Pinkett Smith, Kerry Washington, Alicia Keys

Autumn: your coloring is warm and muted. Look for strong shades with warm undertones, like camel, dark tomato red, forest or olive green, all oranges, coffee or chocolate brown, teal blue. Accessorize with gold.

Celeb examples: Beyonce, Queen Latifah, Serena Williams

Contrast has to do with the difference in color between your hair and skin. You have a high level of contrast if your hair color is much darker than your skin tone. You have a low level of contrast if your hair color is about the same color as your skin tone.

Check out some color swatches based on seasons:

These color theories work for both wardrobe and makeup. Now that you know what your best colors are, take a refresher on The Color Wheel: How to Combine Colors in Your Wardrobe.

It’s safe to go outside your color box and wear something that doesn’t go with your coloring if you wear the item away from your face. For example, if hot pink is not a color that works with your coloring, avoid the hue in a tank top, but you can pull it off as a skirt.

And there you go—a quick guide on how to choose your best colors. Questions? Leave them in the comments or contact me.

    Still…No Diversity in Menswear Shows

    by Claire

    Hey!
So as you may know, menswear collections are currently showing in Europe.

The spring 2011 lines have already displayed in Milan (and are starting to show in Paris tomorrow), so I thought it would be cool to do a little rundown of the 5 black male models to watch on the runway. I hopped on over to fashion resource Style.com, and clicked through the shows up so far. Out of thirteen, only Giorgio Armani and Z Zegna had men of color. The tally so far is TWO.

You may remember, last year I took a look at the shows as well, and also noticed the lack of diversity. Though DSquared, Calvin Klein, Vivienne Westwood, and Emporio Armani represented well, it was still on a downtick from the year prior when DSquared had an almost all black cast.

So it seems things are getting worse.

Can I be honest with you? In writing this blog and observing fashion, my goal is never to be the ‘diversity police.’ Even when I set out to write this post, my goal was to uplift and shine a spotlight on the amazing minority talent seen on international runways.

Still, it’s hard not to get dismayed when things are blatantly and unapologetically nondiverse. And all the talk about black men not wearing labels is blasphemous. Just take a look at our Men’s style section.

    What do you think?

Wardrobe Query : How to Dress up a T-Shirt

    by Claire

Reader Jhaneel writes, “I never wear t-shirts because they look so plain and boring, especially when they’re not v-neck. However, I’m a college student and sometimes it would be nice to be able to throw on a t-shirt when I’m running late. Any advice on how I can spice up a shirt so it doesn’t look so blah? I’ve heard statement necklaces are one way to go…”

Hey Jhaneel! T-shirts and tanks are a comfy go-tos in the summertime, and depending on the design of your tee, can look effortlessly chic by pairing it with dressier elements. You’re right, statement necklaces are always fun, but you can also add a pair of skinny jeans and stilettos or a cute blazer to your run of the mill top to make it pop. Let’s take a look at how some celebrities rock it right:

Notice, the girls above are not rocking your standard ‘gym issue’ tees. To make t-shirts fashionable, stick to classicly chic neutral colors like white, black, or gray. Then add a pair of skinny jeans and peep toe stilettos like Beyoncé, throw on a blazer and short shorts like Rihanna, add a statement necklace like Kim Kardashian, or wear a vintage inspired tee with leopard print sandals like Cassie. Either way, you’re sure to look hot!

Get some ideas for fun t-shirts and fashionable pairings here:

Summer 2010 Trend : Mixed Prints

    by Claire

Only the bold need apply to the latest spring/summer 2010 trend: mixed prints.

Mixing patterns artfully can be super tricky, so stick to these rules if you want to give it a go:

    1. Make sure one color repeats in every piece of the outfit (like Genevieve Jones, if you have an orange paisley print on top, you should have orange in whatever print you choose on the bottom).

    2. Combine loose prints with structured prints (think swirls or flowers with stripes).

    3. Blend small designs with large prints (think gingham mixed with bold flowers, or animal print with geometric patterns).

    4. Think of stripes as neutrals that you can pair with anything.

    5. Have fun!

Mix patterns flawlessly with these fun separates:

Fashion Bomb 101 : How to Get Glossy Magazine Lips

    by Danielle

    Hey Gorgeous Ones!

So in addition to talking beauty with you lovelies here at The Fashion Bomb, I’ve been running my own site The Style and Beauty Doctor for the past three years. It’s tons of fun! We feature product reviews, finance and fitness tips, and TONS of advice for those looking to find out which clothing works best on their bodies and which makeup looks best on their faces. We also run a feature called Ask Danielle as well as answer tons of personal style and beauty questions behind the scenes (contact me if you have any).

A while back The Style and Beauty Doctor reader Tima wrote in asking: “What is the best way to create the perfect lip? I’ve seen girls with perfectly lined lips and it looks like they ripped them out a magazine. Any advice or tips would help. Thanks again.”

I thought this would be great to revisit here as a hot lip look can take you from Hmm… to Hot!

Check out my response and tips below:

In order to get magazine editorial-worthy lips, you have to follow a serious technique of layering. (By the way, did you know that in some of those lipstick/gloss ads, the makeup artist sometimes spends up to an hour getting the model’s lips to look like that? Seriously!)

So here’s what you want to do to get that look (without spending an hour):

    1. Exfoliate your lips. Sounds like a tedious and drama-queen type routine, but exfoliating your lips is as easy as rubbing a toothbrush splashed with water over your lips. Making sure your lips are as smooth as possible helps lip product adhere better to the lips. There are lip exfoliators out there (I tried one by DDF a few years back) but you can take a tiny drop of lip balm like Blistex and mix it with sugar for a DIY one.

    2. Prime your lips. MAC makes a really good lip primer, but good ole Chapstick works just fine! Lip primer helps to not only moisturize the lips, but it gives lip product something to hold onto so it lasts and lasts. If you have particularly dry and flaky lips, find help with either Clinique All About Lips or Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Skin Protectant.

    3. Line your lips. Now this is where we can lose some folks—do not, I repeat, DO NOT draw a dark obvious line around your lips and then fill it in with a light lip color. That’s a major don’t. You want to pick a liner that’s either 1. closest to your natural lip color or 2. one close to your lipstick/gloss color (to intensify the color and when the lipstick/gloss starts to wear off, you’ll still have a stain of color to get you by before you reapply <—if I ever run for any type of office, that’s sooo gonna be my slogan), or 3. a lip liner color that differs from your lipstick/gloss but helps to change the color which gives you more mileage from your lip products (MAC Lip Pencils in Chestnut and Nightmoth are brown girl staples for doing just this).

Line your lips by holding the pencil parallel to your lips so that you’re actually using the sides of the pencil as opposed to the point. Trace around your natural lip line and then shade your lips inside of the line. Blend by rubbing your lips together.

    4. Apply your lip color. For intense color payoff, start with a cream finish lipstick (like the Amplified Creme finishes at MAC) then apply a gloss in a similar shade on top. Rub your lips together, blot, and then reapply the gloss.

To get really sexy lips, also apply a clear gloss on top of your work. Then apply a very shimmery gloss to the center of your lips and gently blot.

All of these layers will help your lip color last even through drinks, but try this trick to avoid getting your handiwork all over that margarita glass: before taking a sip, lick the area of the glass where you’ll be putting your lips. This creates a barrier between your lips and the glass.

While most brands have great lip products, here are a few of my favorites plus the products mentioned in this post:
