Fashion Bombshell of the Day: Biko from Kenya

    by Claire

So we’ve been cultivating diversity in our Bombshell section, with stylistas and stylistos from India to Bermuda. Today we’re adding even more variety with Biko, a transgender designer and fashion stylist from Kenya:

She says, “My style is classic glam, reminiscent of the Hollywood golden age, or as my friends like to call it…Old Lady.”

“… I wear a lot of immaculate vintage pieces which I have been collecting for years.”

“… I find that the key to wearing vintage well is to have a good seamstress to alter everything to either fit you or become more modern.”

“… I mix vintage with high fashion pieces but they have to be classic…”

“… I detest trends and therefore, avoid buying trendy things because they don’t last for more than a season.”

” Besides, being trendy can be very expensive which is why trendy people tend to buy shop at H&M or other discount retail places, its very practical but I refuse to sacrifice quality for quantity.”

“Like I always say, ” Think about what you want your clothes to say about you before putting them on.”

“…For me its more about unapologetic glamour.”"

You’re beautiful! I’d love to play in your closet (or go vintage shopping with you!). See more of Biko’s style at www.lamutamu.com.
    What do you think?

Meh. I’m not sure how I feel about it… and it has nothing to do with her being a transgender.

She only showed “my take on old-Hollywood” style, but not one of these outfits scream OMG to me… idk, nothing just seemed to come together completely. But if she likes it… well she likes it…

I am not too crazy about Biko’s style although I did like 2 of the dresses…..HOWEVER, you guys are being a bit insensitive, rude and judgmental regarding Biko’s lifestyle and gender. You may not agree with someone being a transgender and no one is asking you too BUT you should respect be respectful of others because we are all human beings and deserve respect (until proven otherwise).

Furthermore this is a FASHION blog, you shouldn’t be on here ripping someone apart about their gender or even the way they look (I see PLENTY of ugly fashion bombs and I don’t recall anyone coming for their looks) ALSO, I see plenty of QUEENS for the fashion bomb and you ladies EMBRACE them, why can’t you embrace a transgender? It’s hypocritical IMO.

Anyway, I think Biko’s style is just ok but I liked the blue and white floral dress (sans the gloves). She strikes me as someone who would go to the grocery store in a ball gown, which I find hilarious. I love people who aren’t afraid to just be who they are.

I never ever understood this way of homosexuals. What ever you like behind closed doors is okay, for me, anybody should embrace who they are or what they were born. You can still dress fem in mans clothes.

Yes, I would have definitely preferred some casual looks. relaxed & natural looks MINUS the hair.

As far as being a transgender: I respect it. It’s not easy to make that transition and hurtful things said can make the greatest of differences. She is a woman in her eyes — respect that. If it aint you, stop pressin the situation! Thats THAT.

Stephanie, if you don’t understand it why not do some research before making those statements? Your question does not come across as a question but more of a judgment you’re passing and quite frankly the “question” shows how ignorant you are on the matter. I personally know t’s and it is much deeper than a sexual preference. Imagine being born as a man/woman (physically) but mentally and emotionally you feel like the opposite. I’ve had people tell me their PERSONAL experience (feeling like you’re going through life pretending, feeling like you are trapped in someone elses body etc) and once you speak to someone who has gone through it you will have a better understanding and compassion for their struggle.

Once they change their sex their battle doesn’t end because they still have to deal with people like you.

Stephanie, you should google transgender or maybe just ask a transgendered person if you’re at all interested in knowing how they feel. While I do feel there is always room for people and their varied beliefs, in this (computer) age, there really is no excuse for ignorance.

Biko’s style is too flashy for my own taste, but I do like her outfit in front of the airport. The wig is also way too shine shine.

I love seeing FBOD… but why do people on here have to be so harsh about everything? Like really, anyone who has the courage to submit their pics must be confident and on point because this always seem like cyberbullying to me!! With that being said…

For the most part I was really feeling where she was going with her looks but for some of them the execution missed the mark. Everything was cool except for the black & white get up and the yellow dress…

The white grecian strapless, floral blue dress and purple with the red fur were my favorites. My only major gripe is the facial angle on some of the pics it really does nothing for you to look up at the camera! But all in all it was good, I would like to see at least one casual look. Come to think of it if that was her travel get up this might be as casual as it gets!

And like others have said, her wigs take away from the look, instead of bringing it all together. Don’t knock H&M but turn around and wear a $30 synthetic wig. Once she invests in some quality weave, she’ll look THAT much better.

If you were born a man, you will always be a man. I don’t care if you chop of our penis, take hormones, and soften up your body. It’s still just a man pretending to be a woman. As for Biko, if someone wants to be thought of as a woman, who are we to deny them that. She is on here showing us who she is. We can criticize the clothes, obviously that is what any girl is looking for when she posts on FBOD, but we have no business questioning or criticizing her lifestyle choices.

I like most of the pieces had they been worn individually or with a bit more wearability added to them. Like the fur shawl with a leather jacket perhaps? The clutches with classic colored trousers or mixed up with the leather jacket at the top? I absolutely love the dresses but after a while it does look like she’s trying to overcompensate for her being transgender. Also although they do work in terms of occasional wear, you don’t wear that on a daily basis, on your way to work or shopping, do you Biko? (Silently hoping not!) Overall nice go!

transgender and drag are not the same. At all. Also, it is very disrespectful to call someone who identifies as a woman(i.e. her gender) a “he” or “him” in this capacity no less. This is a freaking fashion blog. Purely speak on the fashion. Wow.

With that said, I didn’t think this was bombshell worthy. Mostly because there’s no versatility. It was more about one look than about a particular style associated with Biko.

Some of you must be horrible horrible people going by what you come here to say. How the western world can be so ignorant beats me. People have gone out of their way to highlight this submission’s gender and sexuality without even talking about the main issue at hand- the fashion. I do not like her style either but I don’t think her orientation is anyone’s business. She didn’t ask you what you think about her sexuality and gender.. She came here for your opinions on her style. It is highly disrespectful to refer to her as sHe, him or it. She identifies as a woman, refer to her as such. It is not your place to point out what her “correct” gender is or should be. Some of you need to be kinder. You have no idea what an individual is struggling with already. It might be your one harsh comment that will break them and trust me karma is a bitch. When you keep investing such unkindness into the universe, please believe that kindness will elude you also. You might think these faceless comments on fashionbombdaily.com are harmless because after all, no one can see you. But the next time you experience harshness in life, remember your “harmless” and “anonymous” comments on here. This not only applies to Biko today, but for every submission you troll on. Some of you need to fall the fuck back with your comments okay? And do some fucking research while youre at it.

Hello FBD readers, this is Biko (the Bombshell Of The Day). First of all, I am sure we can take a moment to appreciate how awesomely entertaining FBD. Also, for those that don’t know what it feels like to be profiled by FBD, I am now in a position to tell you…it feels AMAZING!!!!
I got many emails today (75 and counting to be precise) about the pictures I submitted. My response is, and I know you will find it hard to believe, these are my regular clothes! I took the time to post more pictures of me in regular clothes here http://lamutamu.com/2012/04/27/bombshell-of-the-day/

Also, the hair thing? In my experience, synthetic hair will always look better than human hair if you don’t wear it more than 2 times. That’s about how long I wear my wigs before they hit the dumpster. Everyone has their own unique hair qualms, this is mine.

Then there is the transgender thing? Like seriously you guys, as if I care! I am doing it my way and loving it. I hope that one day you too can get to say that.

      xoxo

      Biko.

      Backlash???

That’s why the average chick on the streets look so boring and averaget these days…..these looks are very realistic. Very wearable. Black women (no matter how much money) are still locked n2 looking EXACTLY like everyone else for extreme fear of being different. Until Rihanna….every R&B black POP 2.0 singer had nothing special to display but the same old boring labels that existed b4 the reading of the ten commandments.

Sooo u loosers take cheap shots cause she is transgendered. Lemme tell u something. I live in San Francisco…..Tranny heaven. If you knew that everytime ur so-called-st8 boyfriend/hubby booked a trip to the city he was hooking up with a tranny u’d vomit in your boring little Vince Camuto heels. Men love glamour…not this bullchit cookie cutter monolithic cardboard style u think is sooo hip. Most American black style is beyond boring. Don’t fool urself. There is a tiny minority of black women who really own their style. The rest of you are just waiting for the next whack rap video to come out to see what some donkey booty vixen is wearing. At least HE is good at being a SHE. What is your excuse for having no imagination other than to do what black women do best: tear each other down to the last shreads.

To respond to one of the commentors: No, not EVERYONE can wear a ball gown to the grocery store. It takes a certain amount of confidence, that allow for doing bold things as such.

Now let me get each and every one of you little conservative people RIGHT into check. Biko is an amazing woman (yes, woman, because she deserves it). For you to actually comment on here to express opinions other than style, is completely inappropriate, and your HATE is giving the ‘different’ people more confidence to go about their ways.

Just because someone doesn’t want to slip into mediocrity, and conform to the norms of what is majority right, does not mean you should bash them. Being transgendered is being apart of the LGBT community, and when you insult one, you insult all.

It puzzles me, especially from an African-American person for them to oppress a certain group of people in society, seeing as how we’ve been oppressed for hundreds of year now. How DARE you go about your day, demeaning and putting down someone who is ‘different,’ because for once the spotlight isn’t on you. Isn’t that a tiny bit hypocritical, especially since we as AA’s are STILL oppressed in the community. How can the oppressed become the opressor? I’m puzzled.

In sum, I would just like to address all of you who have something to say about things that are not style related. Why? Keep issues of such to yourself, this is a FASHION blog, and it is FASHION that should be discussed in these forums Claire so graciously leaves open for you ignorant souls.

I’m OBSESSED with his vintage glamour spin in this contemporary time. Keep it up!

Please relax, with regard to throwing of Salt on H&M and your “so called” quality item. You my dear, are fortunate to have a good tailor. Which is indeed extremely easy and CHEAP to have in Africa. Nothing says quality about your garments, however, I will assume your tailor executed a fairly correct job with creating your “ball gowns”. If we were to go by skid row and detroits as representatives of America, you would be a serious joke. Let’s respect each other. I wont even touch on the willful ignorance. I will just wait for you to give birth to your transgendered child, then we can talk. Some of you are so judgemental, you have no home training. So much e thuggery going on in here. I am really proud of the women and men who shot the rhetoric down! What do you gain by pulling another down?

Anyway – on to Biko – love your syle! You were everything well and with so much confidence. A lot of muttering in here is because of low self esteem. Besides, what can you expect from H&M shoppers?! I spied you you were in Canada because of that board with ‘Bell’ on it! And then I saw you are in Montreal – the fashion capital.
