The 2016 Met Gala theme has been announced!”Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” is the subject matter for the forthcoming exhibition, aimed at showcasing the separation between handcrafted haute couture and factory-made designs. Serving as co-chair is none other than Idris Elba who will share the distinction with Sir Jonathan Paul Ive, KBE: a British designer and the Chief Design Officer of Apple Inc.
Of the theme, Costume Institute curator, Andrew Bolton stated, “Traditionally, the distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter was based on the handmade and the machine-made”. He continued, “But recently this distinction has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other.”
On display will be more than 100 haute couture and ready-to-wear pieces—sometimes juxtaposed against one another for startling effect. Honorary co-chairs include Anna Wintour, Karl Lagerfeld, Nicolas Ghesquière, Miuccia Prada, and Taylor Swift. Apple is continuing their foray into the fashion industry by sponsoring the gala and exhibition.
Stay tuned for more info! The big event goes down on May 2nd.
