Was Ariana Grande’s Dress too Short for Aretha Franklin’s Funeral? A Discussion on Appropriate Funeral Attire with Cicely Tyson in B Michael, Jennifer Hudson in Alejandro Collection, and More

Hundreds of mourners gathered yesterday in Detroit to pay their last respects to legendary singer, Aretha Franklin. The funeral, held at Greater Grace Temple, was a day long affair, filled with rousing eulogies by Cicely Tyson, Bill Clinton, and Al Sharpton and soul stirring performances by Fantasia, Chaka Khan, Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder, Ariana Grande, and many more.

Ms. Franklin was a fashion lover herself, known for decadent furs, bold gowns, and statement jewelry. Her family honored her legacy, changing her outfit for every day of her viewing, and laying her to rest in a full length gold gown and matching sparkly shoes. Those apart of the program gave their nods to fashion as well. Cicely Tyson was stunning in a dramatic hat, gloves, and dress fashioned by B Michael America.

Jennifer Hudson sang Amazing Grace in a custom suit by Alejandro Collection.

And Fantasia Barrino kicked off her Christian Louboutin shoes while singing You’ve Got a Friend in Jesus in a custom black creation.

Ariana Grande sang Natural Woman in a black mini dress and Balmain Daphne Cap Toe pumps.

Her short hemline caused many to question the appropriateness of her attire for a funeral.

As many of the ladies above displayed, modesty is the best policy for a funeral service held at a church. In addition to wearing black or dark colors, hemlines should be longer than the tip of your fingertips and covered shoulders are ideal. See our post on What to Wear to a Funeral here.

Fashion Bomb 101: What to Wear to a Funeral

This is a reprint from an article originally published March 2011

Melissa says, “ I have a funeral to attend this weekend. Can you please give me some ideas on what to wear?”

I actually get this question a lot. The short answer is to wear black. Obviously it’s a respectful ceremony, so your black club mini dress, black jeans, or sneakers are not ok. I’d say err on the side of business chic and pop on a sophisticated black shift (preferably with sleeves), reasonable heels, a black bag, and a tasteful trench coat or shrug. Bring along some dark sunglasses to conceal your puffy eyes.

Sometimes navy and dark gray are considered acceptable. Check with the aggrieved party beforehand:

Fashion Tips for Those Who Are Spending the Day Outside

Spending the day outside may be a big part of your everyday routine. Whether you are a professional working in a corporate environment or a business owner hopping from one meeting to the next, knowing how to dress for a busy schedule is a huge plus.

Aside from choosing the right fashion pieces to wear, you also need to pair those pieces with the right accessories. Only then can you stay stylish and comfortable throughout the day, all without the usual hassles of looking fashionable. These fashion tips will help you achieve just that.

The Bag You Carry Is Everything

The bag you choose for the day is everything. You can go for a tote bag so that you can bring all of the essential items you need. Tote bags usually give the best balance between practicality and style. Yes, there are actually a lot of totes that are stylish and functional at the same time.

Alternatively, you can turn to backpacks or messenger bags, especially if you need to bring more gadgets and essentials than usual. To make things more practical, pick up a few smaller bags and bag organizers.

The latter is good for your cables, your chargers, and even your vaping gear. Mt Baker Vapor has a great set of tips and tricks on how to travel with your mod. You will find that having a small bag for your vaping gear really helps to keep you organized.

Don’t Forget the Shoes

Shoes are always tricky when you want to balance between looking fashionable and staying active throughout the day. Ideally, you want a pair of gorgeous high heels to better support your look. Unfortunately, high heels aren’t the most comfortable type of shoes to wear all day.

There are a few ways around this issue. The first – and the obvious – solution is bringing more than one pair of shoes and alternating between them. You can slip on a pair of flats or comfortable sneakers when you don’t need to meet clients and switch back to heels when you do.

Another way to get around this issue is going for lower heels. You maintain that professional and sleek look, impress others around you, and still feel comfortable enough at the end of the day. Besides, the more you wear your heels, the more you get used to them.

Add Layers for Sophistication

When you are busy throughout the day, layers are your friend. You can turn a simple white shirt into multiple looks by adding or removing layers as you go along. A scarf, a blazer or a jacket, and even a vest are all great items for adding layers.

Wear the blazer and the scarf for a meeting with an important client. Lose the blazer and keep the scarf for an internal get-together with the rest of the team. You can return to the simple white shirt – with a few buttons undone – for a more casual night-out with colleagues.

Staying active all day doesn’t mean you have to look miserable at the end of the day. With these tips in mind, you can stay comfortable and avoid inconveniences while looking stunning throughout the day.

DreamDoll Exclusive Editorial: On Style, Developing Thick Skin, and Her Girl Crush Kylie Jenner

Happy Friday, Bombers and Bombshells!
We have a new Exclusive Editorial, just in time for Labor Day. Behold Bronx Bombshell Dreamdoll, photographed by Island Boi and styled by Mickey Boom for Fashion Bomb Daily .

We sat down with the rapper to talk about her new EP, Life in Plastic, common misconceptions about her, and style.

The 26-year-old, born Tabatha Robinson, first splashed onto our screens via Bad Girls Club, followed by stints on Love and Hip Hop. Though she has been known to have a fiery temper, she says, “I feel like people judge me from IG or the snippets they see on TV when in real life I’m such a funny, cool and down to Earth girl.”

The constant scrutiny led her to log off from her Instagram account, with all of its 1.4 million followers. She confessed, “As a public figure your life is under a microscope. There’s the constant chatter, opinions, questions…so at times you just need a break. I’ve grown from it by developing thick skin. I no longer give a damn about what people say. “ She takes cues from her Girl Crush, Kylie Jenner. She explains, “She is a boss! She has her own brand makes her own money & she don’t care what anyone has to say about her!”

As far as fashion is concerned, she loves brands like Balenciaga and Vetements. She says, “I would say my style is versatile…I tend to dress according to my mood. My style is mainly fun, cute and girlie….I love to wear PINK!” For this shoot, stylist Mickey Boom said, “I chose to focus on luxury brands, with an international barometer of taste and sophistication, such as Sienna Li, Saku, WeAnnaBe, and Victoria Hayes. For the footwear, it was important to add Kendall Miles Designs to this editorial. Like Dream, Kendall Miles is a young African American business woman inspiring other young women to reach for the stars.”

In closing, be sure to pick up her EP, Life in Plastic 2. She says, “It was inspired by my personal journey. It’s basically me working on me…showing the growth through the music and talking about past relationships and becoming a better woman. I open up even more on this project and let everyone in on my story’s highs and lows!”
