Without further ado: please find our most fashionable movies ever list below!

In no particular order:

  1. Clueless
Clueless. 1995, starring: Alicia Sliverstone, Stacey Dash & Brittany Murphy

The fashion & style in the unforgettable movie Clueless was a game changer. Cher & Donnie were a match made in style heaven!

Cher a match maker herself, lead an iconic role in the movie full of epic ’90s fashions, like plaid skirt suits, knee-high socks, and babydoll dresses.

Teen movies & high school dress codes were never the same, adopting the upscale, and what we now call “bad and boujee” swag as a must in many teenybopper character roles good and bad, and even crossing social status.

2. The Devil Wears Prada

The Devil Wears Prada. 2006, starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway & Emily Blunt

The Devil Wears Prada’s take on the fashion industry was not only eye opening, but also had women young & old wanting to update at least one piece in their wardrobe in honor of this classic & bold comedy/ drama on work, life, love and passion for fashion.

The wardrobe budget for this movie was one of the highest in movie history ($1 million.) It also dealt with the undeniable necessity of balance & the simple things, taking the love of style to another level. Andy’s style makeover in all Chanel was another iconic style movie moment.

And Miranda Priestly and those coats? Iconic.

3. Sex and the City Movie

Sex and the City. 2008, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, & Chris Noth

The Divas of Sex and the City explored fashion sense from various grown gal perspectives with much accuracy from within the last decade in the city of style aka New York, with an entire movie and it worked like a charm.

This spin off from the amazingly popular show took theaters by storm. We can never get enough of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte or Miranda, and our love for Manolo Blahnik heels.

4. Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Breakfast at Tiffany’s. 1961, starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard

Not many movies can compare with the level of legendary style in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Debuting in 1961, this is one of the most well known old Hollywood movies for fashion. Breakfast at Tiffany’s stars a fashion icon herself, Audrey Hepburn.

The unforgettable costume designs by Givenchy, Hepburn’s real-life BFF, have become the protype of little black dresses worldwide and no doubt endless Halloween costumes.” Need we say more?

5. Mahogony

Mahogany. 1975, starring Diana Ross & Billy D. Williams

Queen Diana Ross took her talents and fashion sense to the big screen with the help of genius Barry Gordy. The creation was priceless and the end result, the movie Mahogany during the 70’s, changed the fashion game.

Fitted maxi dresses, afro-centric headpieces, hats, big hair, shades, colorful gowns & much more thrust African American style to the forefront of fashion.

6. Oceans 8

Oceans 8. 2018, starring Sarah Paulson, Sandra Bullock Rihanna, Cate Blanchett

Each character in Ocean’s 8 had their own signature & significant style. The costume designer wanted to represent each woman intensely through their wardrobe. One of these leading ladies had up to 65 wardrobe changes for the movie.

It definitely screams “year of the woman.” If you want a glimpse of today’s modern boss chick, from all backgrounds & cultures & the future of female strength, watch this movie.

7. Pretty Woman

Pretty Woman. 1990, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere

A movie with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, how much more fashionable can you get? This new age Cinderella tale was as witty and charming as the style choices.

The best part of the film is watching Julia’s fashion transformation from around the way girl to gal about town. Every lady loves a great style & image makeover every once in a while. And the fellas like Richard, love the outcome too, which made this movie a classic to watch over and over.

8. Boomerang

Boomerang. 1992, starring Eddie Murphy, Robin Givens & Halle Berry

This unforgettable golden area of the 90’s movie introduced the world into a glimpse of real life upscale, professional African American attire.

The business suits, dresses and amazing hair, including Halle’s signature hair cut and fashionably well groomed motivated team of testy individuals, kept you laughing and at the same time seriously captivated.

Legendary Grace Jones, iconic style queen Eartha Kitt, even John Witherspoon took to the screen with unforgettable fashion scenes as well. Women wanted to dress like Robin & Halle. Men wanted their suit game to match Eddie.

Want to relive the fantasy? Get your Boomerang t-shirt here.

9. Shaft

Shaft. 1971, starring Richard Roundtree, Moses Gunn, Charles Cioffi, Christopher St. John, & Lawrence Pressman

The 70’s took a progressive but sobering turn for African Americans and our nation with the strides made by the Civil Rights movement coupled with the loss of great leaders like Malcolm X & Martin Luther King. We expressed ourselves and our emotions through the arts, and a new era of fashion, music, style and culture emerged.

Movies like Foxy Brown & Shaft expressed the change incorporating black leather and Afros, and the signature styles of the Black Panthers. Platforms and widelegs, colorful jumpsuits also came into style as part of the cultural freedom. Richard Roundtree became a movie stylish “superhero” in his own right, making the movie Shaft and its fashion sense unmatched and unforgettable.

10. The Way We Were

The Way We Were. 1973, starring Robert Redford & Barbara Streisand

Some movies capture a time in history with it all. The music, the culture, the style & fashion. The Way We Were is one of those movies. Robert Redford & Barabra Streisand are A list actors not only in their craft, but style icons as well. They made way for other stylish on screen couples like Richard & Julia, Brad & Angelina.

Debuting in 1973, the movie immpecably tells a love story, with the costume design to match. Baby Boomers still consider this one of their favorite movies of all time. Every style statement in the scenes are undeniable but also intricatly tedious.

Redford’s military uniforms were perfection. Even the color of Barbara Streisand’s long finger nails were (painted red purposely) as a symbol of her revolutionary tendencies. The imagery & classic lines in this all star cast’s wardrobe are still mimicked today and make the magic of movies and their fashion & style so important in culture & lifestyle.

Here’s to even more fashionable moments in 2020 and beyond!

Summer Walker Won Best New Artist At the Soul Train Awards: Her Style is Unapologetic

The enigmatic breakout R&B star Summer Walker won the Best New Artist award at the 2019 Soul Train Awards on Sunday, November 17. Summer Walker is having a great year with the release of her debut solo effort ‘Over It’. Her talent as a musician and vocalist is undeniable, however it is her unimpressed nature in respect to the glitz of music industry that makes her all the more alluring.

Credit: Getty Images

The 23 year old took to the stage wearing a bone colored, cropped spaghetti string top with glossy plunging neckline which lends the matching silk cami set it’s insane appeal.  She wasted time giving  her brief acceptance speech and receiving her well deserved award before trotting off the stage in her fur sandals. Summer’s indifference to fulfilling an image most new artists can’t function without is what is most inspiring about her. She recently took to her Instagram to voice her frustration as well as speak out about her battle with social anxiety.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B4ZSo5NAS9s/

https://www.instagram.com/p/B4_lV5EAgbp/?igshid=dxpj0tx6ymhw

Summer has that girl next door type of beauty, freakishly small waist, and curvy physique that stylists would love to work with to transform her into fashion’s next darling. There is a rebellious and esoteric vibe that Summer seems to possess, which is certain to appeal to the world of high fashion.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B4_jcazgNq1/?igshid=1efc30h2tqcgc

Her apprehension to embrace what comes with the entertainment industry seems to lie in her (or perhaps someone else’s) perception that she needs to change when elevation is all that is needed. This resistance makes it evident that she has a staunch sense of self, which includes but is not limited to her personal style. Summer Walker clearly has boundless musical potential, and with the proper embrace from the fashion industry for who she is, she can be the sartorial equivalent. For Ms. Walker has the eyes and ears of every millennial female at attention.

Congratulations on your win Summer!

What to wear: Your choice of clothing for your next trip to the Opera

The Opera is not something too many of us have been to. Therefore, it may be a bit frightening to have somebody invite you to the next play without you having an even single clue of what to wear.

In most cases, people derive their Opera dress-code knowledge from movies they’ve seen of Victorian Opera shows, or some plays taking place in the early 1900s. Well, we’re here to help you out with your choice of clothing.

There’s nothing to be afraid of, the dress code has changed a little bit, but for the better. You don’t have to wear something extremely fancy and elegant like in the olden days, but if you do, there’s a big chance you will earn some nods of approval from other attendees.

So, in this article, we’ve decided to go for two types of outfits you can wear. One, a modern version with a bit more freedom and the second a more conservative classic style that you can choose. We will focus on the fabric, style, and color of your attire, but feel free to customize to your taste.

The Modern Style

Good news! Dressing too classy is not obligatory in the Opera anymore, there will definitely not be somebody standing at the entrance checking your outfit out and deciding if you’re worthy of letting inside. But, there are measures to this freedom. It’s not like you can dress in sweatpants and a hoodie and expect to just blend in with the crowd. No, you are most likely going to earn a few surprised looks from your fellow attendees.

The modern, more comfortable way of dressing for the Opera can be associated with Australia in most cases. We all know the notorious Sydney Opera, right? Well, it turns out that the place isn’t necessarily a bombshell of classy and antique fashion. In fact, this building has been inspiring creativity with its attendees pretty much ever since it was built.

You see, Aussies really like to follow up their Opera visit with something nice. This could be a meal at a restaurant, or even bar hopping in the city center. But, by far the most popular way to follow up an Opera visit is a trip to some of the best Australian VIP casinos they can find nearby. Casinos have become aware of this and are trying to position themselves as close as possible. And when you have plans after your classy event, it’s only natural to either have more comfortable clothes with you to change into later or go with comfortable clothes altogether.

Now let’s look at your choice of clothing when visiting the Opera in 2019.

The Dress

It may be outlandish to say this but bodycon dresses are not necessarily the Opera type anymore. They used to be extremely popular back in the 80s, 90s and early 00s, but starting from the early 2010s designers started to apply a lot more pizazz to their dresses. It took just a few appearances with a more comfortable and airy dress to a show and suddenly everybody was starting to choose it over bodycon.

For one thing, a bodycon may be the perfect way to show off your bodily features, but it’s not very comfortable to sit with for a long period. Furthermore, it’s not necessarily the warmest, which could prevent any further activity after the show, especially if you’re going to have to spend a lot of time outside.

The best dress to go for is a bodycon styled, but a lot more airy type of dress. Most people decide to go with silk, which is understandable as a bit of a shine always helps you with standing out.

Jumpsuits

One of the best additions of modern fashion to the Opera was the introduction of the jumpsuit. It’s both classy and casual, and God knows they’re extremely comfortable.

Most ladies prefer to not be with just the jumpsuit though, as it seems like a very dominant color palette to have both your top and trousers of the same color.

The best way to balance it all out is with a suit jacket of the complete opposite color. So, for example, if you’re wearing a red jumpsuit, something of a navy blue jacket is going to go extremely well with the outfit. But in my personal experience, I’ve seen that the best jacket for a red silk a jumpsuit is a white checkerboard suit with a hint of red.

As for the shoes, it’s best to go for something with very high, but thick heels. It’s best to have the shoe be a bit more open, thus exposing your feet and holding them with just a few stripes of leather. In terms of colors, it’s best to match it with your top, but considering that the suit could be a bit too “flashy”, it’s best to play it safe and go for black.

Remember, the best fabric for a Jumpsuit is always going to be silk no matter the situation.

Accessories

Accessories will mostly depend on what you’re wearing as a top. If you’re wearing a long-sleeved suit over a jumpsuit, then it’s best to keep the accessories mostly tied to your ears and neck.

However, there’s always the opportunity to have them on your wrists should the venue be warm enough for you to take off the suit.

As for dresses, most ladies like to keep the accessories to a minimum. The only thing you can pretty much go for is some earrings and a single necklace.

As for the type of accessories you can use, I’d suggest going with Pearl or Emerald. The pinkish vibe of the pearl and the fragrant green of the Emerald is going to mix quite well with the venue of any Opera house.

The Classics

The classics are much easier to deal with. However, Operas that require a classic dress code are few and far between nowadays. There are only a couple of events that could demand you dress in a victorian style.

This part of the article doesn’t necessarily require too much information as the victorian style is pretty easy to replicate.

I suggest having the color palette of white, dirty pink or beige. As for the dress, I’d suggest having an airy bottom side while a tightly wound top with a corset. The best fabric, it’s pretty obvious that it should be either wool or cotton.

The good news about the classic outfit is that you can go with just slippers instead of heeled shoes, which makes the visit much more comfortable.

Don’t forget about the hat as well, it’s a crucial part of the outfit, even though you won’t be needing it to shield you from anything.

Who Wore it Better? Beyonce vs. Draya Michele in David Koma London’s Gold Iridescent Gown

Beyonce shimmered at the Shawn Carter Foundation Gala in the same Iridescent David Koma dress previously worn by Draya Michele in Paris:

Both ladies wore it similarly with hair down and simple accents, though Beyonce added extra verve with a custom “Billionaire” clutch by Judith Leiber.

The dress was originally imagined to be more sheer, but both ladies lined the look, and tailored to suit their shapes.

I think they both look bomb! What say you?
