Where to Find Fashionable Hypoallergenic Earrings

Jewelry allergies can put a real damper on your fashion sense. It is frustrating to buy that perfect pair of earrings only to find that they make your ears super sensitive. Finding accessories to match your wardrobe is more of a challenge, and you may be nervous about even purchasing earrings because you’re not sure what you need to look for.

If you are unsure of your next earring purchase because you are afraid of wasting time and money on earrings that will leave your earlobes painful and crusty, keep reading. This guide will give you the know-how you need in order to find the cutest hypoallergenic earrings around. Once you know how to look for the right hypoallergenic earrings, you may even want to get a gift box for earrings containing all the gorgeous earrings you find.

Finding the Cause

If earrings make your earlobes hurt, itch, or get crusty, you most likely have a nickel allergy. Nickel is one of the most common culprits of sensitivity to jewelry, with an estimated 10-20% of the population being allergic. This is likely because nickel is found in everything from zippers to water faucets. The prolonged repeated exposure over a long period of time gives people a higher chance of becoming allergic to the metal.

The reason nickel is used in everything is because it is inexpensive, abundant, and durable. It mixes easily with other metals, withstands extremely high temperatures, and has a natural shine. This is why it is so popular in jewelry. Most metals, including gold and silver, are too soft to withstand being worn day in and day out. But metal alloys—any type of metal mixed with another metal—containing nickel are sturdy enough to be worn regularly, and the nickel they contain enhances their shine.

Hidden Nickel

The key to finding fun earrings that will not cause you problems to wear is making sure that they contain no nickel. Sounds simple, right? Since nickel is everywhere, there are some challenges that come with this task. Gold and silver earrings can have small amounts of nickel mixed in to make them more durable.

Often, posts are made of a nickel base because the gold or other metal used to coat them is too soft to withstand wear. Finally, even if the actual earring and post are entirely nickel-free, it is a very common metal found in earring backs

What to Buy Instead

Gold that is at least 14k or higher is not likely to have any traces of nickel. Rose gold and white gold are the least likely to contain any nickel. However, since gold is too soft for posts, then gold will only be a coating for them. You need to confirm the base of the posts is made with sterling silver, titanium, or other nickel-free metals.

Surgical stainless steel is another good option for earrings that will not irritate sensitive ears. Earrings worn immediately after piercing are usually made of this metal. This is because it is safe enough for highly sensitive skin and does not react with exposure to tissues and body fluids. Other metals to consider, are titanium, palladium, or platinum.

Look for Certified Nickel Free Jewelry

There are at-home testing kits out there if you want to check the jewelry you already have, but they are not particularly dependable, especially when it comes to nickel that has a thicker coating of another metal that is nickel-free.

The best, most reliable way to be sure your earrings will not cause you misery, is by purchasing jewelry that is certified nickel-free. Not very many companies will do this, but the best earrings are made by companies that have the metals they use in their jewelry batch-tested, to ensure they are nickel free.

Rowan certifies all of their jewelry is hypoallergenic and nickel free, so you do not have to worry about the bothersome irritation that comes from earrings containing nickel. When you order a monthly subscription earring gift box from them, they will send you a beautiful gift box for earrings in the mail every month.

Real, hypoallergenic earrings never have to be boring, when your subscription includes the latest styles and fashion trends.

Best of 2019: Outfit of the Year featuring J. Lo in Versace, Cardi B in custom Thom Browne at the Met Gala, Beyonce in Cong Tri at the Lion King Premiere and More!

Our Best of 2019 superlatives continue, as we build up anticipation for the Faby’s, our Inaugural Awards show, taking place in New York’s City’s Williamsburg hotel on December 13th! Get your tickets here.

Next up, we have Outfit from the year, a list compiled based on likes on the Gram and our Editors suggestions! For us, this list includes not just beautiful garments, but arresting ensembles worn by iconic people at high wattage events–clothes that changed the energy of the year and got people talking. Clothing can be powerful, as witnessed by the looks below.

In no particular order:

  1. Cardi B in Thom Browne at the Met Gala

It’s hard to shut it down at the Met Gala aka the Fashion Olympics, but Cardi B did just that this year in a fantastical, feathered dress by Mugler at the 2019 Costume Institute Gala. The theme was Camp, which means ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, and theatrical, and with her stylist Kollin Carter, Cardi B slayed right down to her $250,000 ruby bejeweled headpiece.

2. Janelle Monae in Christian Siriano at the 2019 Met Gala

There were many memorable moments from the 2019 Met Gala, and Janelle Monae had one of the most artistic ensembles in a gown imagined by Christian Siriano which featured everything from a winking eye on her bosom to a pile of fabulous hats, balanced on Janelle’s head. This is how you follow a somewhat abstract dress code, but still get it right.

3. Kim Kardashian in Mugler at the 2019 Met Gala

Another Met Gala ensemble: Kim Kardashian in custom Mugler. While most attendees went for over the top, Kim K’s look was relatively subtle with a flesh toned, ruched dress, covered in glittering drops reminiscent of dripping water. Reader @IfYouTakeaLookInside was all for it, and wrote, “She looks incredible. This is epic surrealist art.”

Do you think Kim has the Best Outfit of 2019? Vote below!

4. Beyonce in Cong Tri and Alexander McQueen at the Lion King Premiere

Beyonce was the voice of Nala in the Lion King, and thus shined on many red carpets promoting the film wearing stunning looks by Cong Tri and Alexander McQueen. Beyonce’s looks alone are the 3 most liked looks of the year on @FashionBombDaily; her Lion King looks are 2 out of the 3. What can we say? FBD loves Beyonce!

5. Billy Porter in Christian Siriano at the Oscars

Billy Porter seemed to shift the earth on its axis when he chose to wear a velvet Christian Siriano tuxedo dress and matching jacket to the Oscars. Few men are bold enough to toe the gender line on a red carpet quite like Billy does, and even fewer could pull it off and look amazing while doing so.

6. J. Lo in Reimagined Iconic Versace Dress

Another axis shifting moment this year? J. Lo at Versace’s Spring 2020 show, where she donned a modern recreation of the iconic Versace silk chiffon dress she wore to the 42nd Grammy Awards in 2000.

The dress caused enough of a stir when she first wore it! And for the 2nd go round, La Lopez looked just as good as she did almost two decades ago.

7. Rihanna in Givenchy at the 2019 Diamond Ball

No Outfit of the Year post would be complete without Queen Rih! She was the belle of her very own Diamond Ball in a Givenchy Fall 2019 couture gown, styled by @IllJahJah. Amazing and Effortless as usual.

8. Zendaya in Vera Wang at the 2019 Emmys

Zendaya is another fashionista with impeccable style, aptly displayed at the Emmy’s in a forest green Vera Wang dress perfectly complemented by matching green pumps and auburn red tresses. Zendaya and Law Roach are a match made in fashion heaven, and this Poison Ivy-esque look was easily one of the best of the year.

9. Mary J Blige in Custom MCM x Misa Hylton for the Royalty Tour

Mary J. Blige did her signature dance during the Royalty tour in a series of Bomb Looks, styled by Wayman and Micah. While she had many amazing moments, she moved and rocked the most in a custom MCM x Misa Hylton ensemble, which included monogram thigh high boots, a monogram accented jacket, and monogram shades.

Go, Mary!

The Best Streetwear Trends for 2020

With 2019 slowly drawing to a close, the fashion houses are already looking towards 2020 and showcasing some of the biggest trends that are yet to emerge. In the world of men’s streetwear, there are both familiar and new trends that you can start to incorporate into your wardrobe if you’re hoping to stay ahead of the game.

As we head into early 2020, here are some of the streetwear trends that you can invest in before the summer season arrives.

Oversized puffer jackets

The puffer jacket is a streetwear staple, forming many outerwear collections with its unique padded style. Traditionally with a shorter length, the winter season has deemed it acceptable to elongate your favourite quilted coat and create an oversized longer design.

Seen at the likes of Balenciaga and Off-White, oversized puffer jackets are the next step for the ever-evolving streetwear industry. The general consensus here is bright shades and patterns, offering something exciting in the midst of grey and dark weather. With floor-grazing styles, this is certainly a bold move, but if Virgil Abloh is doing it then it must be good.

Distressed knitwear

Another perfect trend while the cold weather is still lingering in early 2020, distressed knitwear is the ideal blend of practical seasonal dressing with a streetwear edge. Sweaters, knitted jumpers and cardigans have fallen victim to the torn, shredded look to create a fascinating influence of both grunge and streetwear.

Seen at Vetements and Balmain, distressed knitwear was teamed with oversized tees and bomber jackets to create a seasonal layered look. Other knitwear trends this season included illustrated sweaters, with logo-emblazoned designs and graphic prints taking centre stage.

Cargo trousers

Part of the utilitarian trend that works perfectly amongst streetwear styes, cargo trousers made a huge comeback across designers like Fendi, Stella McCartney, Dries Van Noten, Lanvin and Louis Vuitton.

Complete with drawstring ties, large pockets and earthy tones, this year’s cargo trousers are inspired by workwear but made much cooler. Styled with shirts, knitwear and tees, it seems cargo trousers have become a versatile design and a great alternative to your usual denim choices.

Cross-body bags

While they have become more common in recent seasons, cross-body bags for men are becoming a little more mainstream than previously. A practical addition to your outfit, the cross-body bag is the perfect masculine accessory.

Often styled with a small knot in the strap to bring it closer to the body, you can store your own wallet and phone in style. At Off-White, built-in cross-body bags were found teamed with the aforementioned oversized puffer, resulting in the ultimate streetwear look for 2020.
