Pre-Fall as a category of fashion shows can be somewhat confusing at times. Isn’t Pre-Fall simply Summer or rather the few weeks before Fall begins? Despite its misleading moniker, Pre-Fall presents yet another opportunity for designers to share their inspirations and in some cases, provide an indication of what is to come before F/W 2016 presentations take place in New York, London, Milan, and Paris.
Here is our take on the top 5 Pre-Fall trends likely to stay in style during what are sure to be some cold spring months.
1) Coats
The polar vortex that hit the U.S. last spring is likely to come again (sigh global warming) and as a result, coats will be more handy than ever before. Italian brand No. 21 offered some mixed-material styles of wool, quilting, and fur trim. Looking for something a bit more edgy, see Rochas’ tartan high-slit coat or Alexander Wang’s grommet bomber jacket. For the classic fashionista, check out Bottega Veneta’s contrast collar coat or Burberry’s large lapeled suede version for your next jaunt in the city.
2) Knitwear
For cooling temperatures, I am intrigued by the matching knitwear sets I’ve seen on the runway. Chanel channeled a Fair Isle-esque aesthetic with coordinating dress and sweater. British brand J.W. Anderson presented a rich chocolate combination with divine bell sleeves with black bows. Looking for a knit fringe, look no further than Oscar de la Renta’s cream-and-black knee-length skirt or Delpozo’s cable knit turtleneck top. For a more casual occasion, A.L.C. offered a body-clinging maxi dress with tiny straps.
3) Prints
Stars. Hands. Horses. These are just a few of the bold prints spotted during Pre-Fall collections. When worn as a full ensemble and suited for your body type, prints can be extraordinarily flattering. Check out a Parisian-chic hand print with Sonia Rykiel, floral pattern with Erdem, stars with No. 21, festive horse motif with Vionnet, and multi-color swirl with Versace.
4) Pleating
As one way to add extra dimension to your spring dressing, pleats can enliven a simple look. Tory Burch opted for a knee-length silk skirt in warm tones while Michael Kors showcased a sheer paneled cocktail dress. Veronique Branquinho had red in mind for her long-sleeved boot-grazing number. Alice + Olivia and Christian Siriano embraced black-and-white in their styling of pleated dresses, perfect for a lunch with friends or dressed up for an evening.
5) Evening Wear
A taste of evening wear was thrown into the Pre-Fall mix and the options were varied in color palette and texture. French brand Rochas put forth a decadent one-sleeve sequin dress and fur stole. Marchesa had a wine stained laser-cut tiered gown and Sonia Rykiel rocked out with a high-low black and gold sequin ensemble. A short striking number came from Christopher Kane with sultry ruffles and pockets to boot. For those celebs seeking color, Christian Siriano designed a fierce hot pink high-slit gown. Who do you think will rock these looks on the red carpet?
Dolce & Gabbana has infused their signature Sicilian aesthetic into a line of hijabs and abayas, earmarked for Muslim women. While each piece is still modest, they are far from plain, using luxurious materials like sheer georgette, satin and lace in addition to floral print and jewel embellishments. Traditional headwear has gone haute couture.
This move is a step in the right direction for Dolce & Gabbana, whose creative directors have been accused in the past of cultural appropriation , and been accused of insensitivity to ‘non traditional’ families.
The Muslim population spends billions on clothing and shoes, so it certainly makes sense to create items for this underserved yet powerful audience.
Hopefully, more luxury brands will follow suit in 2016!

Serena Williams recently opened up to the Times Magazine about her struggles with body acceptance.
The 34-Year-Old Bombshell said, “When I was younger, it was hard seeing all these thin athletes when I had more muscular curves and was big-busted…Just try running with DDs that are bouncing seven inches up and down! It’s distracting, not to mention dangerous, because you can tear ligaments.” Girl, don’t I know it!
She continued, “I know I get flack for my physique, and it has been a struggle to love my body, but now curves are in and I’m happier [with] myself. Women face so many impossible ideals. It’s important for me to get across that there’s more than one way to look amazing.”
Indeed. I personally think Serena is flawless. Body goals, hello!?!
It’s comforting, however, to know that even world class, championship winning athletes can feel insecure about their bodies. I’ve dealt with my own issues in the past.
