Rock It! Or Knock It?: Fabric Chokers

There’s been a revival of 90’s-inspired trends over the past few months. Since the grunge-filled presentations at New York Fashion Week (including Alexander Wang and Dries Van Noten), the fascination with this era has caused quite a stir in the style industry. We’ve whipped out out our crop tops, Doc Martens and “around the waist” ties… But, the fabric chokers??

So, help us out as we try to decipher whether we’re rocking or knocking this rocker-chic accent.

Gigi Hadid rocked her choker for a night out on the town. While pairing it with a monochromatic look and funky lace-ups, she pulled the trend off effortlessly.

Yesterday, LaLa Anthony served it up for the ‘Gram as she embrace more softer hues. Slay, hunty!

Let’s not forget about the Fenty x Puma Fall 2016 runway show! This presentation was was loaded with references to the beloved 90’s.

Our girl Karrueche offered a more playful spin on the fabric choker. While donning a thinner version and Aquazzura’s adorable pom-pom sandals, she added a personal touch to a simple ‘fit. Cute!

And, last up, we have Rihanna! The fashionista turned heads in a risque high-slit Tom Ford number and a matching white choker. Gorg, no?

Kanye West Accused of Stealing Jacket Design from Homeless Teen for The Life of Pablo

Kanye West’s scribble graffiti jacket may just not be his own.

The rapper turned fashion designer is currently under fire for his denim jacket most recently sold in “The Life of Pablo” pop-up shop in New york earlier this month, mostly for its resemblance to a similar jacket from the 90s worn by Tweeky Dave, a famous runaway youth from Los Angeles who has now passed away. The main uproar comes from San Francisco-based multimedia artist Jim Goldberg, who featured Dave in his book, Raised by Wolves, in 1995, and who now claims that West stole the look and has amassed wealth from the jacket without properly attributing credit to Dave and his legacy. kanye-west-yeezy-3-life-of-pablo-event-2016-billboard-650

“For the jacket to become sold as fashion — it really put me over the edge,” said Goldberg. “The spirit and intention of Kanye could be right, but the manner in which he is presenting it is wrong. All meaning has been lost. [He’s] forgetting history — not acknowledging where that design came from is wrong.”

Hmm…while none can defiantly say that West was inspired by Dave’s jacket specifically for his collection, we can definitely relate to stories of a history or importance of something to a specific culture being forgotten by a designer who showcases it in their latest campaign (cultural appropriation, anyone?) . Plus, it’s very much so possible that West COULD have taken Dave’s jacket for inspiration, seeing as how he has been seeing wearing a Tweeky Dave replica jacket before.Kanye-West-Tweeky-Dave-Jacket-Life-of-Pablo

Ultimately all I would want from them is acknowledgement of Dave, and maybe they give something to homeless kids,” he told i-D, who noted that Goldberg apparently plans to take legal action.

Do you think Kanye West should credit his source of inspiration for a collection? Rather, should he financially be held responsible for the remembrance and significance of those involved in the original inspiration or photo that possibly incited inspiration for his jacket that has helped him make over $1 million dollars?

Lululemon Shades Beyonce’s Ivy Park Line; the BeyHive Stings Back

The BeyHive is something fierce.

Today, with Beyonce’s massive Ivy Park announcement, tweets were being shot off a mile a minute. One that got its fair share of attention? A missive from Lululemon who responded to Twitter user GoodGuySly’s questionis ivy park supposed to be like lululemon?

lululemon shaded beyonces ivy park line on twitter

The result was understandably a riot. For context, the Canadian athleisure brand is known for being one of the bigger names in the market, that’s true. But creators, or proprietors of the entire athleisure movement, they are not.

https://twitter.com/kibyonce/status/715591481923387393
https://twitter.com/YonceDash/status/715591711595044865

In fact, just yesterday the brand was releasing a statement about how they hoped to double their sales to a whopping $4 billion by the year 2020. Of those sales they hope to obviously beef up their consumer base. Men are a key component of that strategy.

https://twitter.com/lknmre/status/715575392296259586

With that in mind, it’s pretty curious that the social media team would issue a #hottake like this about Beyonce. Why even wade into those waters? The worst part: while responding to people calling out the shade, it seems some of the tweets got even shadier.

https://twitter.com/lululemon/status/715568335560314880

It’s an interesting tactic for sure but we’re not sure that’s going to help them at all if they are hoping to gain fans. We’ve all seen the effects of messing with the BeyHive.

Who Wore it Better? Keyshia Cole vs. Jennifer Williams vs. Mal aysia Pargo in Just Enaj’s ‘Jennifer’ Bodycon Gold Grommet Dress and Giuseppe Zanotti Sandals

Keyshia Cole Hosted “R&B Tuesdays” at Aroma in Atlanta last night, and kept it saucy in the same $189 Just Enaj ‘Jennifer’ Bodycon Dress previously spied on Jennifer Williams and Malaysia Pargo.

Interestingly enough, all women chose to mix high and low, accessorizing with Giuseppe Zanotti sandals. Keyshia sported the brand’s $2,660 Rhinestone Pavé Chain Leather Sandal, Malaysia rocked $1,595 ever popular gold leafed Coline beauts, and Jennifer tip toed in $1,780 Serpentine inspired heels.
Leaving just enough to the imagination, this long sleeve mini dress features gold grommet details throughout the front, a high neck and cutout front bottom detailing.

I think they all look hot, but a few Instagrammers shaded them for wearing knock off Mugler, calling the Just Enaj version cheap and tacky (the original Fall 2015 dress, beloved by Khloe Kardashian, Vivica a Fox, and more, rings in at around $2,500).
What do you think?
