Yesterday, I was blessed to film a talk for BET/Centric’s series called the Round. Fashioned after TED talks, the Round features African-American industry leaders in various vocations as they share their journeys, wisdom, and advice. The goal is to uplift, inspire, and empower.
Every talk was poignant and overwhelmingly powerful; you’ll definitely want to tune in this Fall/Winter!
For my speech, I spoke about my humble beginnings. Though a lot of you were saying “Yassss!” when I moved to Paris (see my announcement post here), Paris was not glamorous, people! I struggled while there to find a job and a decent place to live. Bet ya didn’t know that. Now you know. Tune in to Centric to get the story;)
To speak on the round, I went for my interpretation of Parisian chic in a Balmain blazer I scored at Net-a-Porter, a Haute Hippie Gold top, and Rayar Jeans chain distressed jeans.
Facts: Rihanna is a colossal pop star with a sphere of influence that spans fully across the globe. She’s sat in many a front row and has donned Couture looks with absolute ease—it’s truly all in a day’s work for Ms. Fenty. But Paris has absolutely held a special place in her heart, which is why she transported her sporty Fenty x Puma world to the fashion capital for Spring 2017.
The dignified and luxurious Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild felt like the perfect venue to show the assortment, though Rihanna’s original inspiration came from another famous location in France—the Palace of Versailles. Like so many sartorially-obsessed women like her, Marie Antoinette served as influence for the designs. And the self-proclaimed bad gal is no stranger to the royal dwelling—she shot her Dior campaign there last year.
The pieces were as delightful and alluring as sporty chic pieces can be—completely edgy and modern iterations on her queenly allusions. If the French Queen ever frequented an Equinox or dared to sweat to maintain her physique, she might just wear these clothes: at least in Rihanna’s mind.
The things on display that felt the most imperial? Pearl necklaces, lace detailing, floor-grazing jackets, and cameo brooches wherever possible. Corsetry and rosy pink cheeks drove the titled point home with aplomb.
Puma’s athletic signatures peeked through with baseball caps, mesh-detailed dresses, platform sneakers, an update on the brand’s snap-side track pants, drawstring bags, and oversized hoodies. The collection switched between the elevated and the active effortlessly, with getups that often combined the two: not wholly unlike Rihanna’s actual wardrobe.
And the palette here was much more delicate and mellow than the debut’s gothic color scheme—or lack thereof. Bubblegum pink, olive, beige, and white dominated: a range Marie Antoinette would surely be fond of.
Three centuries ago, it was normal to see men in powdered wigs, heels, and voluminous silhouettes. So it felt right for Rihanna to include men in the show—considering she’s a huge proponent for brands that have completely thrown out gendered designs in favor of pieces that can work for everyone.
I truly cannot wait to see how Rihanna wears these looks: especially the lace-up pumps. She welcomed everyone to the show in the fanciest take on a track jacket and matching pants that we’ve ever seen: eyelet-accented with a drawstring shaping the waist like a peplum, a train anchoring the trousers in drama and decadence, and a Puma logo fan. If we’ll all look that good in the wares, then sign us up for just about everything.
What do you think of Rih’s Spring collection for Fenty x Puma?
Cut from fluid silk-twill, these tapered ‘Adele’ pants feature a red, teal and mustard botanical print. Adjust the drawstring waist for an exacting fit.
Ayesha rocked the runway look by pairing her Adele pants with a navy blue and red trim blouse.
I would wear this in a heartbeat! Definitely worth the splurge!
Her top is sold out but you can purchase the pants here for $315.
Happy Thursday!

A Balmain show is the height of glitz and glamour and no expense was spared for the iconic French fashion house’s Spring 2017 collection unveiling. The front row was brimming with the brand’s flock of celebrity fans and the catwalk was equally full of the world’s biggest supermodels: Olivier Rousteing certainly can bring them out, can’t he? The designs were sleek, serpentine, and sinuous in true Balmain fashion.
For the momentous affair, Rousteing transformed Paris’s famed Hôtel Potocki into a leafy jungle, complete with vegetation oozing from every crevice. This set the tone for the ferocity and power of the looks to come.
The Creative Director called on all his BFFs to take to the runway: naturally they all happen to be some of the globe’s biggest models. Doutzen Kroes, Jourdan Dunn, Natasha Poly, Gigi Hadid—the list goes on.
Though there were more than enough scantily-clad looks to go around, it was nice to see Rousteing embrace layered ensembles—a quite obvious nod to the house’s more modest clientele. Cutout dresses were layered under floor-grazing jackets and over leggings, bomber-inspired jackets falling at the knee were belted at the waist to offset their longer lengths, cape jackets were juxtaposed against flowing maxi skirts, and separates were paired together for a chic suiting effect.
Snake-embossed and actual exotic skin designs were plentiful with strappy belts on-trend with the current corset fad, knit dresses with thigh-high double slits, contrast open jackets, and a long trench that screamed luxury.
There was absolutely no denying the force of the eveningwear here. It’s clear that Rousteing is very much catering to the red carpet set all around the world: a very smart move with the number of film festivals, movie premieres, and stylish events seeming to double almost yearly.
And do we even need to mention who’ll be wearing the styles on display? Kim and Kourtney Kardashian and equally stylish mom-ager Kris Jenner all lined the front row: three of the most powerful Balmain fans in the world. A red jumpsuit with sheer panels and side slits was the perfect red carpet piece for the selfie-loving mogul, though I’d personally like to see any fashionable star in a colorfully embellished robe dress with transparent insets.
