Though we’re a little over six months from the 2017 Met Gala, we’re already excited because the theme has been announced! The momentous occasion and Costume Exhibition will honor none other than icon Rei Kawakubo:
The show is the first exhibition honoring a single, living designer in 33 years. The last was dedicated to Yves Saint Laurent in 1983.
Of the news, the Costume Institute’s Curator Andrew Bolton said, “Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past forty years.” He continued, “By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.”
120 womenswear designs from Comme des Garçons will be featured in the exhibit, harking all the way back to the iconic brand’s first runway collection in 1981 through to the present.
East/West, Male/Female, Past/Present will be just a few of the vignettes. And no glass will be covering the mannequins outfitting the pieces, so it will be one of the Met’s most up close and personal exhibits yet.
As for the fête, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour will serve as co-chairs.
Mark your calendars for May 1st as that is when the main event goes down. The exhibit will then open on May 4th.
It’s that time again! Last week Kenzo x H&M gave us a teaser by releasing their look book for the upcoming collaboration. Last night we were on the scene for their highly anticipated runway show that will kick off the countdown to one of the most vibrant, colorful collection yet!
Let’s get one thing straight; this show was complex. Kenzo x H&M gave the performance of a lifetime! Models sashayed down the runway in groups of 3 all while performing a dance number to the classic song, “Express Yourself,” by Charles Wright. Oh yea, let’s not forget the marching band that played along to the music and danced with the models. Not your typical runway show.
The burst of colors and prints will awake your animalistic instinct. Kenzo takes you on a ride in the jungle by merging colorful zebra prints with festive florals, polka dots and cheetah. While the visual stimulation may seem overwhelming, the collection offers fun and liveliness.
Matching sets were among the many themes in the show. A modern-day interpretation of jungle living comes to life in the blue men’s wear set. The subtle trimming of zebra prints mixed with blue, green and red cheetah translates into a wearable, casual look. Perhaps my favorite piece from the collection is the floral bardot crop top and matching palazzo pants. The effortless, whimsical set is my idea of what Kenzo’s princess of the jungle would wear.
The collection is filled with fun, loud pieces. If you’re not a risk taker when it comes to fashion, you probably won’t be a huge fan of print and color overload. It literally stimulates all of your senses!
Instead of a final walk, the show ended flash-mob style. Models, dancers and band members got on the runway and danced like their lives depended on it. It was pretty dope!
Seated front row were some of our fashion favorites. Iman and Bethann Hardison (both in the Kenxo x H&M collection) sat with June Ambrose.
The after party was sponsored by Belvedere. Their signature cocktails definitely matched the energy of the event!
If the fashion fete was not enough, Kenxo x H&M had a popup shop, allowing you first dibs on the new collection. While waiting on the line to get into the store, I ran into Rosario Dawson. The actress was dressed in a skirt from the line and by the looks of it, she indulged in some shopping!
The Kenzo x H&M show was a direct representation of the collection. It is bold, powerful and not for bland. These are conversational pieces that make statements. If you’re not ready to be the center of attention, then this collaboration may not be for you. What do you think? Will you join the hype on Friday, November 5th?
Lady Gaga was the lady in red while heading to a T Magazine celebration in NYC, going bold in a Valentino Couture Fall 2016 Red Ruffle Cape Train Dress and Black Leather Boots:
She eschewed the runway’s jewels and middle-part chignon for the occasion.
Her navy stripe top features hidden button front closures and cutout detailing along the sleeves.
Her leopard-print trousers are crafted from cotton-blend velvet. They boast wide legs, a set-on waist band, darting, angled side pockets, zip-fly, and hook-and-bar- closure.
She can wear anything!
Rih’s pants are sold-out, but you can get her top here. Shop similar leopard trousers below.
Seoul Fashion Week is going down right now! If you’re never been to the South Korean city, I implore you to visit as soon as you can. The style there is unreal and if you have a penchant for denim, you might just go broke and leave all your coins there. That’s why it is no surprise that brand Kiok is one of the biggest—known for its conversation-starting iterations on the classic texture:
Mother-daughter trio Kiok Kang, Coco.J Lee, and Crayon Lee started the brand over a decade ago in 2004. Their Spring assortment juxtaposed denim with plaid, stripe crop tops, and ruffle-accented bomber jackets—anchoring most of the looks with slide sandals or floral-patterned booties for that vernal touch.
The waistbands of jeans were turned upside and thrown over tie-shoulder tops, while low-slung pairs harked back to the early aughts with zip-fronts and raw hems.
Supremely feminine ensembles were pulsed into the collection by way of bow detailing, transparent skirts, rosette embellishment, Spring-perfect florals, and flounce necklines.
My favorite pieces among the wares were the tops: fun takes on girly classics like A-line designs and off-the-shoulder denim numbers with peplum bottoms and bustier-inspired styling. The items were functional, but completely statement-making—the kinds of articles you absolutely want in your wardrobe.
Denim aficionados including Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Tracee Ellis Ross would look fabulous in these looks. Longline denim jackets would be effortless on the bad gal, while ruffle-detailed button front tops would work with Bey’s proclivity for Gucci accessories.
Fashioned with an asymmetric cut accented with signature ruffle shoulder detail, the Maria De Medici top is perfect for showcasing your shoulders and décolletage. The blouse is finished with a waist-cinching wrap tie, all-over stitching and cut-out to the chest.
I guess we know who Rihanna supports! The Bajan singer/designer was spied in NYC endorsing presidential hopeful, Hilary Clinton, through fashion in a $35 Trapvilla Hillarygraybrim Tee:
The limited edition, grey, 100% cotton tee shirt features a picture of Hilary Clinton in a New York Yankees baseball fitted hat.
Rihanna kept it casual in a pair of cut-off shorts and chocolate Timberland boots.
Yes, Rihanna! What a bomb way to say #ImWithHer!
You can purchase the HilaryGrayBrim Tee here for $35.
