Beauty Crush Wednesday: Viola Davis

bcw-viola-davis-18

While many know her as the cunning and dubious attorney and law professor Annalise Keating on ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder,  award-winning actress Viola Davis has been blazing the big screen for more than fifteen years. And with Oscar buzz surrounding her latest project, Fences, with Denzel Washington, all eyes are on her.

bcw-viola-davis-15

Obvious acting chops aside, Viola also delivers on the red carpet in vibrant gowns with just as stunning makeup. Choosing the right foundation for ebony skinned women has long been a challenge, but she gets it right everytime.  Viola even adds a little bronzer to give her face a bit of glow.

She loves to mix things up with her lip shades, depending on her ensemble for the day. With basics like white and black, Viola prefers a nice pop of red or even orange for her lips to excite her look. In bright attire, her makeup is more subtle, leaning toward nudes and light glosses for her pout.

bcw-viola-davis-16

As for her hair, Viola loves to give good wig. Whether in an asymmetrical bouncy bob, bangs, or classic fingerwaves, she loves to experiment. And on occasion, she loves to rock her cinnamon colored natural hair on the carpet while many others are afraid to do so.

Beauty isn’t simply an external feature for Davis, as she has constantly shown immeasurable support for women and other black actresses in the industry.

bcw-viola-davis-25

So here’s to Viola Davis, this week’s beauty crush, who consistently pushes the envelope and unabashedly epitomizes black beauty in the face of European beauty ideals.

Hot! or Hmmm….: Kim Kardashian’s Pierced Nails

kim-kardashian-pierced-nails

Kim Kardashian recently flaunted pierced nails via her snapchat and sent the fashion/entertainment world into a frenzy.  “Kim Kardashian starts new trend as she tries out pierce nails,” read The Daily Mail headline.

This pre-existing trend dates all the way back to 1998 when Busta Rhymes and Janet Jackson collaborated on the song, “What’s it Gonna Be.”  Women went to their neighborhood nail salons and styled their nails with piercings and designs as the trend became more popular.

Gucci Teases Potential All Black Pre-Fall 2017 Ad Campaign: Cool or Problematic?

gucci-all-black-ad-campaign

It’s a crazy time in the world right now. Trump has implemented travel bans, thus creating even more division and upset in the world.
Meanwhile, fashion brands like Gucci are pushing for more inclusivity. The hugely popular Italian house released a series of audition tapes for their Pre-Fall 2017 ad campaign, and it seems only black models were invited to the casting call.

Subjects were asked to discuss their spirit animals, and even told to show off their dance moves.

At first glance, the concept seemed cool. In 2016, we dubbed Gucci our Brand of the Year, and it’s great to see a European house make a concerted effort to reflect the diversity of the world and most importantly its customers. The dancing part made me go Hmmm….the whole charade seemed reductive and problematic. What does dancing have to do with their modeling skills?

Of course it could all be in fun. Maybe the Pre-Fall 2017 campaign will also have a music video component? If not. Hmm…
