Beauty Bomb: Nina Dobrev’s 2017 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Edgy Bob, Styled by Riawna Capri

If you’re wearing a sheer Dior gown to one of the biggest parties of the year, then your hair has to be just as cool as your dress. Case in point: Nina Dobrev at the 2017 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Her edgy bob was the perfect complement to her frock from the iconic French fashion house—dry-cut by famed stylist Riawna Capri. She used a texturizing technique to maintain a blunt perimeter.

Here, the step-by-step details to recreate Nina’s gorgeous look:

1. Wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo & conditioner duo to enhance your hair texture.

2. Prep your hair with a heat protectant that won’t weigh it down, as well as a primer to create a foundation to keep the style in place.

3. Rough dry your hair to boost its natural texture and volume.

4. Once dry, separate your hair into three sections. Then, begin curling your hair from the bottom— gradually changing the iron size from the smallest (.75″) to medium (1″) to large (1.25″) as you make your way towards the top layer.

5. Shake out your curls and set them into place using a flexible hold spray. And Riawna’s pro tip? “Volumizing products and creating a base of tight curls helps to create that really big and full look.”

Beauty Bomb: Taraji P. Henson’s 89th Annual Academy Awards Old Hollywood Bob

Taraji P. Henson was one of our most popular looks at the 89th Annual Academy Awards. And you saw why right? Her Alberta Ferretti gown was perfectly complemented by her glamorous bob—an ode to Old Hollywood icons like Diahann Carroll and Dorothy Dandridge.

Here, all the steps to get her gorgeous tresses by famed stylist Tym Wallace:

1. First, prep your hair using an anti-dandruff shampoo & conditioner, to alleviate any scalp dryness and itch but keep your hair soft, nourished, and manageable. When you’re wearing midnight sapphire like Taraji, you don’t want anything distracting from the gorgeous shade of your gown!

2. Once your hair is cleansed, spray a leave-in detangler on 2-inch sections of your hair before blowing them dry with a blow dryer.

3. Emulsify two to three pumps of a cream serum in your hands and distribute it evenly throughout your hair, before using a jumbo barrel curling iron to create pin curls. Then, set your hair with velcro rollers to lock-in the curl memory.

4. After your curls are set, take them down and use a tried-and-true Mason Pearson brush through the roller set. Then, use your fingers to set the look in place before liberally spraying with hold hairspray.

Beauty Crush Wednesday: Ashley Graham

Bold, buxom and beautiful, this supermodel has caused a cataclysmic shift in the fashion world of waif thin girls.  Blazing the catwalks with her sexy stride to coaching and grooming aspiring models as a judge on the reboot of America’s Next Top Model, Ashley Graham has us all wanting to know more, especially how she manages to look so flawless all the time.

The gorgeous brunette loves to show off her cascading mane, often worn out and full of loose curls and bounce.  But who doesn’t love a good ponytail every now and then, especially when your bone structure is as amazing as hers?

As for makeup, Ashley usually highlights her beautifully tanned skin with natural looks.  Subtle eye-shadow and nude lips are her niche.  But when she vamps it up…

…she adores a good smokey-eye or a brooding red shade to accentuate her full lips.

Obvious pulchritude aside, Ashley has been slaying the game for years, but after her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue 2016 cover, she became one of the driving forces behind the conversation of diversity in fashion and of curvier women needing to own their sexiness and confidence.  And with her countless lingerie shoots and swimsuit line, it’s safe to say she’s owning hers.

So here’s to you, Ashley Graham!  An advocate for body positivity and a woman who isn’t afraid to stand confidently in her curves without being defined by any beauty standards but her own.

Hot! or Hmm…: Rihanna’s Harvard Foundation Humanitarian Of The Year Award Ceremony Monse’s Fall 2017 Gray Off-The-Shoulder Belted Dress and Matching Boots

Well, our girl has yet another accomplishment under her belt.  Today, Rihanna was awarded Humanitarian Of The Year by the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations, heading to the prestigious university in a look phresh off the runway, no less.  The “Work” singer skewed teetered the line of corporate and sexy in a Monse Fall 2017 Gray Off-The-Shoulder Belted Dress and matching boots.  This shoulder bearing number cuts straight under the clavicle with lapel like flaps draping across the bust.  A wide belt cinches the waist while the thigh-grazing slit, that cascades into ruffled pleat, offsets the heavy fabric.  Matching, thigh-high boots feature a full-length zipper running on the inner side of the boot, upping the “Anti” with this look and elevating its modern aesthetic.I mean, is this even up for debate?  Hot!  The color and silhouette was event appropriate.  And though she could’ve opted for a pantsuit……this is definitely more her style.  And when you can pluck a look like this just seen on the runway two weeks ago, why not? The Bajan Beauty completed her look with minimal makeup, a diamond choker, a long, sleek ponytail, and a black Dior purse.Rihanna beamed as she received her award for her efforts in education via her Clara Lionel Scholarship Foundation, which awards scholarships for college to deserving Caribbean high school students.  She also built a state-of-the-art center for oncology and nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat breast cancer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown, Barbados.  Amazing is a gross understatement. Very well deserved, Rih Rih!  Congratulations on receiving such a distinguished accolade and setting such a precedent for giving back!Rihanna completed her day by taking a tour of the university with Dr. S. Allen Counter (pictured), all smiles along the way.

This look isn’t available just yet for purchase, but you can peep the collection here.

What say you?  Are you feeling Rihanna’s look?

Black History Month Future Legends: Celebrity Stylist Memsor Kamarake

To conclude our Black History Month Series, we met with celebrity stylist, Memsor Kamarake. Wendy Williams’ stylist showed up in his signature denim on denim Armani ensemble, ready to dish on his journey as a stylist.

Though he was born in New York, to West African immigrants from Sierra Leone, Memsor’s journey began across the pond. He was living in London and used to read Vibe magazine, religiously. “I was voracious! I would read it cover to cover. I got to know all the editor’s names and followed Emil Wilbekin, who at the time, was a market editor.”

The fashion enthusiast admired Emil’s work and began to study his day-to-day life through the lens that was provided with each magazine issue. This ultimately led to the revelation of his future profession. “I remember saying to myself, “Oh my God! That’s what I want to do!” The market editor is the point person responsible to source products for shoots that best suits the editor or stylists’ vision.

The first step Memsor took towards attaining his dream job was to head back to where it all started, New York. In doing so, he acquired a position at the Ralph Lauren store, which lent him a ‘scope on the business side of fashion. Of his experience he stated, “Working at Ralph Lauren on the retail level was very instructive. There was the Polo Sports store and then the mansion [Ralph Lauren] that was across the street.” Seeing how both stores operated separately, but were yet one entity, introduced him to the notion of branding.

Coincidentally, he encountered his role model, Emil Wilbekin, at a party. He seized the opportunity to tell the editor how his work had inspired him. He recalls telling him, “You’re one of the reasons I moved to New York, I was very highly influenced by your work”. As fate would have it, a friend alerted him of a fashion assistant position that opened up at Vibe. Unbeknownst to him, Emil had been promoted to Editor in Chief. “I met with the fashion director at the time, and she says, “You’re fantastic, let me walk you down to my boss”, opens the door, and it was Emil. The Editor immediately recognized him from their previous run-in and sealed the deal! Since then, the relationship between the two has morphed into a brotherhood.

Memsor found himself working for the very publication he had admired for so many years. He worked his way up the ladder, from fashion assistant, to market editor, and ultimately, Fashion Director-which he did for 5-6 years. As print began to phase out, the transition to digital, forced the stylist to move on to a career in freelance.

In the midst of freelancing, he was approached to take a meeting with the Wendy Williams show. Though he did not know all that it entailed, he advised to always take a meeting. “What’s the worst that can happen?” It’s a good thing he agreed because here he is, 5 years later, as Wendy’s resident stylist.

The stylist admits he’s had a reputation for working with people on the rise up; on their way to super stardom. A great example, is his shoot with then Senator, Barack Obama, before his political acclaim to Commander-In-Chief. His clientele also includes, Beyoncé, Brandy, Melanie Fiona, Ciara, and more.

More than anything, Memsor has taken a philanthropic approach to work, lending his hand in international fashion productions, in an effort to assist in assimilating western practices. “The idea is taking what I know and spreading it around the world. Working with a designer who maybe doesn’t have access to what we have. You bring that level of production to what they have there, little by little they progress, and you also get to see a different standard of beauty. How they’re influenced by what we have here, but also influences that are home grown.” He finds solace in stepping into the shadows to allow others to thrive.

One should always pay it forward. A quote that resonates with him is, “Each one teach one”. “I am only here because folks did the same exact thing with me. I am a recipient of that blessing and love that folks poured down on me, so therefore, I want to make sure I am that for other people.” By allowing himself to be a vessel of knowledge to others, he believes he is honoring those who came before. He considers veterans such as, June Ambrose and Misa Hilton, as mentors who guided him along the way, and provided him with keen advice; something he wishes to pass along. Other fashion notables who have inspired him are fashion designers, Edward Enninful and Kimora Lee Simmons, along with fellow celebrity stylist, Jenke Ahmed Tailey.

Though he never interned, he strongly encourages it. “Interning gives you first hand experience of whether or not this is for you.” To those who want to hop straight into it he stated, “The work is what sustains you. Don’t just pretend to do the work on Instagram with a picture of a rack of shoes and you’re not on set. It’s not the most glamorous job.” No matter what point in your career he cautions that he always finds himself walking down 7th avenue, on a hot sweaty day, with a garment bag. For those who think they are above that, this job isn’t for you. In addition he advised, “The relationships are really important as well. If you don’t have the relationships it’s not going to work, so returning samples on time is key.”

If you’re going to delve into this career, give it all you’ve got. “Don’t come in and be a mediocre stylist or come in mediocre and work up to higher.”

In conclusion, Memsor expressed his desire for aspiring stylists, “I want you to respect the work that I do, but I’d be more honored if you used that inspiration to then go do something for yourself, rather than follow my every move. Get off that couch and show me what you can do! “

Preach, Memsor!
