It is a historical day: Edward Enninful has been named the Editor of British Vogue.
The current fashion and creative director of W Magazine has previously worked for Italian and American Vogue. At British Vogue, he will take over for Alexandra Shulman, who announced her departure in January.
The Ghanaian-born, London bred stylist got his start as the youngest fashion director at i-D magazine, where he created scintillating covers and editorials like his epic P.Y.T. Pre-Fall 2009 issue featuring Chanel Iman, Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn and Arlenis Sosa.
According to OrjinCulture.com, “In 1998 Enninful began contributing to Italian Vogue. A chance to work with fashion giants Franca Sozzani and Steven Meisel, it signified his arrival amongst fashion elite. Creating powerful imagery at Italian vogue; most notably he contributed to the infamous Italian Vogue “Black Issue” in 2008 that sold out around the world, and forced condenast to re-print an additional 40,000 copies. He directed the Italian vogue “Black Allure” shoot in 2011, which showcased the worlds top “up and coming” black models in luxurious, elegant, 20’s and 30’s themed gowns and accessories. In 2011 he also did a beautiful and sensual spread with three stunning plus size models, showing the world how high fashion larger models could be. In 2005 American Vogue invited Enninful to contribute to the iconic publication. While there he was able to work with the incredible Grace Coddington and Anna Wintour on shoots like “We Are The World” shot by Steven Meisel, where he showacased the top Asian, Black, African, Spanish and Caucasian models in a wildly luxurious shoot. His ability to create elaborate sets and add a richness to everything he touched defined his style.”
He joined W magazine in as fashion director in 2011, and continued his reign of sumptuous editorials, rich in diversity and stylish aplomb.
Enniful’s appointment is historic for the fashion industry. He is the first male and first black male ever to be named Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue. He also joins Elaine Welteroth, Editor-in-Chief of Teen Vogue, and André Leon Talley, Vogue US’s former editor-at large, as one of the few black people with high ranking positions at a Vogue iteration.
Fashion Bomb Daily was created as a response to the lack of diversity in the fashion world. For years, there have been accusations of racism in fashion; British Vogue at one point was highlighted as a magazine that didn’t feature black covergirls (in 2015 Jourdan Dunn was the first black model to cover the glossy in 12 years).
Enniful’s new role signals a new change and a seismic shift in the industry. It stands as a beacon for the diversity and inclusion we’ve been wanting from the fashion world for years.
Supremely talented and a true visionary, noone is more deserving of this prestigious post. A huge congrats are in order for his appointment.
