The Color Wheel: How to Combine Colors in your Wardrobe

Ever wonder how some of your favorite fashionistas put colors together to create eye-catching and fabulously colorful outfits? Well so does Fashion Bombshell Kendra who wrote in asking, “As a recessionista engineer, I cannot afford to buy a new wardrobe for the spring/summer. I have great pieces in my wardrobe already so I want to know how to make the most of my wardrobe by playing around with different color combinations. My mom gave me a color wheel as a gift. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get it right…”

“…Can you please provide tips on how to combine colors for clothes? I saw the awesome post about color combos for makeup featuring Nicki Minaj. I would love to do the same with clothes. For instance, in a recent post Elise Neal wore a fuchsia dress and carried a blue clutch. The fuchsia and blue colors look great together! I would never know to do that. Also, are there certain rules for accessories?

Hey Kendra!

The color wheel is an excellent wardrobe tool! In fact it was one of the first things I learned about back when I studied Image Consulting at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Figuring it out isn’t too complicated. Here’s a quick breakdown:

You can make the following combos using the color wheel as your guide:

1. Colors directly next to each other (i.e. yellow and yellow-orange; yellow and yellow-green; violet and blue-violet, etc.)
2. Colors that form right (90 degree) angles with each other (i.e. yellow and red-orange; blue and violet-red; green and orange, etc.)
3. Colors directly across from each other (i.e. yellow and violet; blue and orange; red and green, etc.)
4. Colors that form a T (i.e. blue, orange, and violet-red; yellow, violet, and red-orange; yellow, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)
5. Colors that form an X (i.e. blue, orange, violet-red, and yellow, violet, blue-green, and red-orange, etc.)

Since brown is a neutral, it will go with virtually any color on the color wheel. I love to pair a chocolate brown with cobalt blue or fuchsia or bright red—such a fun and bold combo. Of course white, black, and the hues of blue found in denim are also neutrals that go with just about anything.

Colors that are a part of a “color family” also apply. So for instance, you can substitute pink with red and still be able to pull off the combos based on the color wheel (i.e. we see that blue and red form a right angle with each other–then in Elise Neal’s outfit she wore fuchsia and cobalt blue). Get it? Good.

As for accessories, I’m definitely not a fan of colored jewelry or belts, but go crazy with colored hats, bags, shoes, or scarves. When choosing jewelry, pair gold (or gold-toned) jewelry with your warm colored outfits. Warm colors have a yellow, gold, or orange undertone to them. Wear silver (or silver-toned) jewelry with your cool colored outfits. Cool colors have a blue, pink, or red undertone to them. Since colors are broken down by hue, temperature, intensity, and tone any single hue can be either warm or cool. Just look at the undertones.

You can also use the color wheel when coming up with color combinations for your makeup. It can help you decide which makeup color to wear so that you don’t match your eyeshadow with your outfit. Check out how Rihanna paired gorgeous purple eyeshadow with her red frock:

And there you go—a breakdown of how to use color combinations to spruce up your wardrobe. You’ll be looking more fab in no time.

60th Annual Grammy Awards Top 5 Best Dressed: Beyoncé in Nicholas Jebran, Rihanna in Alexandre Vauthier, Eve in Naeem Khan, and More!

The 60th Annual Grammy Awards made it’s big return back to the big apple on January 28th. There were an array of events following up to music’s biggest night including a Roc Nation brunch with all our favorite stars, a Clive Davis and the Recording Academy’s Gala honoring amazing lyricist Jay-Z, and more. But, of course, the moment everyone waited for was the big night. Nominees and celeb attendees stunned on the carpet and during the awards ceremony in some amazing looks. Here were the top 5 best dressed according to your likes on the ‘Gram!

1. Beyoncé in custom Nicholas Jebran

We can always count on Queen Bey to bring the heat! She didn’t walk the red carpet, but she made an appearance and broke the internet in a custom double thigh split gown by Nicholas Jebran. The curve-hugging dress emphasized Bey’s bomb hourglass figure. Accessorizing with a statement hat, diamond earrings and bold Alain Mikli shades it added every bit of chic to her look. To top it off, the mom of 3 rocked sleek straight back cornrows. This is how you do the Grammy’s! Hot!

2. Rihanna in Alexandre Vauthier

Rih Rih opted off for the grand red carpet entrance, however she accepted an award for Best Rap/ Sung Performance alongside Kendrick Lamar in a full vinyl look by Alexandre Vauthier. The Grammy winner wore the belted jacket off the shoulder and stole the show as usual!

3. Eve in Naeem Khan

Eve got glam at the awards adding a personal twist in a Naeem Khan embellished pantsuit. With a little cleavage and a diamond necklace, she owned this look. One of the top accessories to this look was definitely the hair to side which added a bit of edge to her look. Hot!

4. Cardi B in Ashi Studio

Cardi B channeled angelic vibes in a Ashi Studio dress with a deep plunge V in the back. Of course, the ‘Bodak Yellow’ rapper paired the all white look with her infamous bloody shoes. The up-do added every bit of glam to Cardi’s look. For her first Grammy’s red carpet, she did not disappoint at all. So beautiful!

5. SZA in Atelier Versace

SZA was a dream in a sheer Atelier Versace gown with tons of tulle. As a look that was extremely different from the songstress’ norm, it was definitely a head turner. Her statement big hair was all that was needed for this amazing red carpet appearance.

They all looked amazing! Who’s got your vote for best dressed?

Fashion Discussion: Ulyana Sergeenko x Miroslava Duma’s N*ggas in Paris Bouquet + No Diversity at Revolve + Consistent Silence When it Comes To Issues of Diversity in Fashion

I didn’t march in the Women’s March this past weekend. Why? While I stand in solidarity with the women’s movement and do believe women deserve equal pay and equal treatment in the workplace and beyond, can women truly be unified when so many white and Asian women remain silent when observing racist behavior?

Two times in recent fashion history, we’ve seen brands blatantly exclude or denigrate people of color. First H&M put a young black boy in a sweatshirt that says, “The Coolest Monkey in the Jungle.” Then e-commerce site Revolve neglected to include brown bloggers on their latest influencer trip.

I reached out to two women I know nominally well who attended #RevolveAroundtheWorld and asked them to participate in a talk about diversity during NYFW. You might be surprised (or maybe not) that some of your favorites didn’t deign to respond. Instead of having a constructive talk about issues of diversity, the two women I reached out to chose to remain silent. THEY SAY NOTHING. They do nothing. Why march for women’s rights with people who would not march for civil rights?

The latest infraction: street style star Miroslava Duma posted an image of flowers she received from designer Ulyana Sergeenko to her Instastory, signed with the note: “To my Niggas in Paris.” They can use whatever word they want in private. But no, Ms. Duma made it public.

Everyone knows that niggas is a derogatory term. EVERYONE KNOWS THIS. But this is a word Ulyana and Miroslava apparently regularly use amongst each other. As Sergeenko wrote in her apology via Instagram, “Kanye West is one of my favorite musicians, and NP is one of my favorite songs. And yes, we call each other the N word sometimes when we want to believe that we are just as cool as these guys who sing it.

The women who are complicit in our exclusion from fashion shows and exclusive events are the same women whose picture you double tap when you see them pea-cocking in the street. Miroslava Duma has great style, yes! But she also published this picture of a woman sitting on a chair fashioned after a black woman in her magazine.

If we are going to march for rights, let’s march for EVERY Woman’s rights. Asian and Caucasian women, please stand for something. Don’t just take selfies, flip your skirts, and stay mum when it comes to issues of diversity.

When you see injustice, call it out and make sure things change from the inside. Your silence means consent.

Yes, you and you and you. All of you in the picture above. Please, stand for something. Go deeper than the surface.
It’s time.
Love & Light,

**In the meantime, let’s support each other. As you can see, it’s hard enough out there as it is.

  3. Viola Davis in Brandon Maxwell
Viola Davis graced the carpet outfitted in a custom Brandon Maxwell velvet gown. With a layered necklace and her afro she was all smiles as she arrived. Readers were loving her natural hair statement— @sxyleogrl wrote, “That hair is giving all the life necessary for 2018.” So sleek!

Tracee did not come to play on the Golden Globes red carpet! She was clad in a high neck sleeveless Marc Jacobs gown and a matching black head tie. Her stunning red lip gave the all black the perfect pop of color. @lacigale_ wrote, “Come through black queen, so regal!” This look was everything.

That wraps up our top 5! Who’s got your vote? Rae

Best of 2017: Fashionista of the Year

Fashionista of the Year is a hard list to make, especially with the litany of look-at-me moments we’ve seen on the red carpet! With all the beautiful Fashion Bomb celebs, it’s hard to pick just 5, so we filtered our list down to women who keep us guessing, with unexpected ensembles that keep the fashion world talking.
In no particular order:
1. Monica Brown

Miss Thang Monica is playing zero games on the fashion front this year. With photographs by @Cyndiibee_, Mrs. Brown communicates her stylish sensibilities with everything from Toshop to Saint Laurent, Off White, and Johanna Ortiz.

A platinum straight bob and a sultry stare are always the perfect accents to her looks. While we may have overlooked her stylish penchants in the past, 2017 was Mo’s year to slay.

2. Tracee Ellis Ross

Blackish Actress and all around funny gal Tracee Ellis Ross has been a fierce fashionista for some time. But this year, she shined like no other, hosting the American Music Awards where she donned a total of 12 outfits. Everything from sparkly Stella McCartney to a shirt from her mother’s garage were fair game for her hosting duties:

While she certainly turns it up on stage, we also triumph in Tracee’s personal style. With a great body, fabulous hair, and an electric personality to match, she can’t go wrong.

3. Cardi B

2017 has been the year of Cardi B! With her breakout hit, Bodak Yellow, followed by features with G Eazy and a new single, Bartier Cardi, like her music, Belcalis Almanzar’s style ascension has been off the charts.

Sure, she used to be known for taking off her clothes, but now she drips in threads by Givenchy, Christian Siriano, Laurel Dewitt, Rayar Jeans, and LaQuan Smith.

A true fashion lover, she takes chances and isn’t afraid to shine.

Here’s hoping 2018 is even more fabulous for Ms. B!

4. Zendaya

Zendaya has been unstoppable on the style front all year. With her tall stature, gorgeous looks, and the help of her stylist Law Roach, she has owned almost every red carpet she has graced.

Stand out looks? Her Moschino Butterfly Effect Dress, her pink Barbie Ralph & Russo gown, and the green Zuhair Murad gown she wore to the MTV Awards.

Law Roach and Zendaya are a match made in Style Heaven! I can’t wait to see what they do next.

5. Rihanna

No most fashionable list would be complete without Rihanna! The Bad Gal always wears items Phresh off the Runway. YSL boots, Off White jackets, you name it, she’s got it.

While Rihanna titillating our senses years ago with street style, she now exudes a more casual yet runway elegance.

That Rihanna reign just won’t let up!
Who was your most stylish fashionista of the 2017?

Best of 2017: Most Fashionable Couple

There is no doubt this year has delivered a slew of show stopping red carpet moments. But when it comes to the slaying together, these celebs have undeniably mastered it. As we get ready to usher in the New Year, let’s delve into our 2017 picks for our most fashionable pair below.

1. Gabrielle Union & Dwayne Wade:

This dashing duo should come as no surprise as the ever stylish pair pranced around Europe coordinating seamlessly all summer long. The Wades tastefully experiment with bold prints & exuberant hues while keeping it chic & classy.

The two sat front row during Men’s Paris Fashion Week highly anticipated shows rocking Rick Owens, Off-White, Balmain and Berluti just to name a few.

Oh and how can we forget the subtle yet stunning statement Gabrielle made at the Emmys outfitted in a Zuhair Murad sheer black whimsical cape gown while her beau was nothing less then dapper donning a classic Maison Valentino tux. Hot!

2. Cardi B & Offset

It is without question 2017 has been the year of Cardi B & with her beau Offset by her side.

The new “it” couple took New York Fashion Week by storm rocking bold and luxurious looks from Christian Siriano, Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang & Laquan Smith.

Cardi B & Offset recently attended “The Set Gala” a ritzy birthday extravaganza for the Migos rap star where he donned a YSL studded button up, custom RTA brand pants by Zoe Costello, & Saint Laurent boots. Hostess Cardi gleamed in in a Nicolas Jebran crystal and diamond encrusted dress Louboutin pumps and Freida Rothman accessories.

They Slay!

3. Gucci Mane & Keyshia Kaoir

The Wopsters are all about showing up and showing out. Embellished ensembles, sequin statements and elaborate furs are a must for the luxury loving pair.

YSL, Givenchy & of course Gucci are just a few of their favorites.

During their highly anticipated star studded wedding the couple showcased their affinity for grandeur bling as the brides custom couture gowns sparkled in crystals while Mr. Davis opted for a sleek three piece tux teamed with a diamond encrusted bow.

4. Teyana Taylor & Iman Shumpert

With a marriage that spans over two years The Shumpert’s are a beautiful representation of black love. Although we were not bombarded with daily images of the twosome this year, when this stylish duo stepped out, it was a sight to see.

Iman & Teyana are both unapologetic and unafraid to take risks with their wardrobe–and we love every minute of it! While Teyana has mastered the art of the tomboyish feminine swag, Iman continues to take a sleek but edgy street wear approach mixing high and low.

We love it!

5. Sean “Love” Combs and Cassie

We saved the best for last! Sean Combs aka Puff Daddy aka Love is known to be superior stylewise, so it makes sense that his wifey is on the same accord. This year has seen them slaying in both casual and formal ensembles, rocking everything from tuxes and ball gowns to matching athletic MCM with ease.

Though they’ve showed up and showed out quite consistently over this past year, little could top their Met Gala moment, with Puff taking a seat on the carpet to bask in Cassie’s exquisite beauty.

With their unparalleled swag combined, they are unstoppable.

That does it!
