Fashion Bomb Exclusive Editorial: Jennifer Williams on Basketball Wives, TV Drama, and Living Life with No Regrets

Basketball Wives star Jennifer Williams is the subject of our latest photo shoot, styled by Eric Burns exclusively for Fashion Bomb Daily.

Stylist Eric Burns plucked pieces by Toussaint L Overture, Balenciaga, Charles and Ron, and Ott Dubai, for a shoot he describes as, “A combination of high fashion, sex appeal, and street chic. I wanted to get Jennifer out of her comfort zone a little bit and try something new.”

Basketball Wives just wrapped, but Jennifer admits that her re-entrance on the popular series after a several season hiatus has been rocky. She says, “It has been a trying season on Basketball Wives. I truly don’t have drama in my real life outside of TV so it is a bit exhausting at times. I am catching hell this season but I say this, the real show is behind the scenes!”

As rumors swirl around her skipping out on the Reunion this season, she confesses, “ I try not to live life with regrets. I believe there is a lesson and/or blessing from every experience whether good or bad.”

She continues, “My worst moment was probably going through a court trial with an ex-boyfriend on camera. I wish it was a clean breakup and the unnecessary court drama was not in my life and especially not while I was filming a reality show. However, it probably resulted in my best moment on the show which was going to see a relationship coach. I wanted to take accountability for being in several dysfunctional relationships and see why I was attracting these type of men in my life. I truly feel Spicy Mari helped me in that department so it was a breakthrough moment for me. “

Aside from filming for Basketball Wives, Jennifer stays busy with her online store, Classy Girl Wardrobe (she hopes to open a brick and mortar location soon).

With her full schedule, she still finds time to give back with a passion project she is working on called Finding Home. She explains, “[Finding Home] focuses on helping a handful of homeless people in the community to get their lives back on track and a find home. We don’t get to see compassion a lot on Reality TV…I really want people to believe in humanity again. The homeless situation is a huge epidemic in LA. At the top of the year, I made a list of goals and one of them was to give more….so that is what I’m trying to accomplish.”

All in all, she says, ” The ultimate goal for me is to work on projects that bring me joy.”

September 2018 Issues are All About Black Girl Magic: Beyonce on Vogue, Tiffany Haddish on Glamour, and More!

Tracee Ellis Ross on Elle, Beyonce on Vogue, Tiffany Haddish on Glamour: September Covers of Fashion magazines are all about Black Girl Magic!

Jounalist Lola Ogunnaike was the first the notice this trend, compiling a collage of magazines like Marie Claire, Ebony, and Net a Porter Magazine featuring their covergirls Zendaya, Issa Rae, and Lupita Nyong’o, respectively.
The Hollywood Reporter cast 18-year-old ‘Grownish’ star Yara Shahidi for their Cover.

Shape plucked Aja Naomi King.

The September issue is arguably one of the most important covers in the magazine world. In addition to housing hundreds of advertisements, the fashion heavy glossy is chock full of new trends in beauty and style. It is so key to the magazine business that Vogue made a documentary about the multi month process and pain it takes to put one together.

Representation of black women is typically rare. As Beyonce said in her Vogue article, “When I first started, 21 years ago, I was told that it was hard for me to get onto covers of magazines because black people did not sell.”

These multiple representations of brown beauties of various hues definitely portends a positive change in the industry.
What a wonderful move in the right direction!
We’re definitely here for positive imagery and multiple instances showcasing the beauty of diversity.

Beyonce’s Vogue September 2018 Issue: African-American Photographer, But No African-American Designers?

Beyonce graces Vogue’s powerful September issue in a shoot lensed by Tyler Mitchell, the first African-American to photograph the magazine’s cover in its 125 year history.

On one cover (above), Mrs. Carter poses serenely in a floral headdress by Rebel Rebel, a Lynn Ban headpiece, and a frothy white ruffled Gucci dress. On another, she holds a sheet up high while modeling an Alexander McQueen frock and corset along with Lynn Ban earrings.

Inside the article, she tells writer Clover Hope the importance of Opening Doors, saying, “When I first started, 21 years ago, I was told that it was hard for me to get onto covers of magazines because black people did not sell. Clearly that has been proven a myth. Not only is an African American on the cover of the most important month for Vogue, this is the first ever Vogue cover shot by an African American photographer.”

She continues, “It’s important to me that I help open doors for younger artists. There are so many cultural and societal barriers to entry that I like to do what I can to level the playing field, to present a different point of view for people who may feel like their voices don’t matter…I pray that I’m doing all I can to open doors for the next generation of talents.”

Beyonce’s words are beautiful, as is her shoot, styled by Tonne Goodman in looks by Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, and Dior. But while she proudly highlighted Vogue’s use of an African-American photographer, she was not styled in one African-American designer in the highly lauded ‘September issue’ of the country’s most revered fashion magazine. Vogue’s only representation of talent from the African diaspora is a suit by Wales Bonner, a biracial designer from London.

Perhaps this omission would have been overlooked in past issues of Vogue (this is Beyonce’s fourth cover for the magazine, and her 2nd September issue). Never before has she accompanied her covers with an article that touches on the importance of opening doors for the next generation of African-American talent.

But since the spotlight has been thrust on the issue of diversity in fashion, it would seem fitting that the magazine showcase the talent of a young African-American designer.

Bey has undoubtedly shown love to African American designers in the past, wearing everything from Laquan Smith to Samantha Black to Harbison, and many more.

American Vogue has become more diverse over the years, featuring African-American women on the cover more frequently and also now giving an African-American photographer a chance behind the lens. Their support of African-American designers, especially for an American fashion magazine, could certainly be better. As an authority on fashion, why touch on the topic of ‘Opening Doors’ without opening the doors to African-American designers? And what better canvas than a Queen like Beyonce?
