Cushnie et Ochs Rebrands as Just Cushnie

Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs of the beloved brand Cushnie et Ochs have parted ways. This morning, the brand announced the change, simply adopting the name ‘Cushnie.’

Carly Cushnie told The Business of Fashion, “Following the the departure of co-founder Michelle Ochs and chief executive Peter Arnold earlier this year, change is afoot — and Cushnie is in the driving seat, taking the creative and business helm as sole creative director and CEO. The brand’s upcoming Spring 2019 show during New York Fashion Week this September will be Cushnie’s solo runway debut.”

In addition to offering denim in her upcoming collection, Cushnie plans on adding new styles to her bag line. She also has plans to give back to show younger designers that anything is possible.

She told BOF, “Ever since I was young I wanted to be a fashion designer, but there weren’t really many or any role models I could really aspire to in the space. That’s why it was important for me to partner with the Lower East Side Girls Club, because there are so few women like me who have the opportunity to be able to give back, and to be an example, as a woman of color.”

Congrats to her! We’re looking forward to her next collection and to what Ms. Cushnie does next.

Nike Taps Virgil Abloh to Create Serena Williams Collection, Just in Time for the US Open

Just in time for the US Open, Nike has tapped creative Virgil Abloh to create a collection for tennis great Serena Williams.

About the collaboration, Abloh told High Snobiety, “With Serena, we have one of our generation’s most powerful, inspiring athletes as the muse. I was trying to embody her spirit and bring something compelling and fresh to tennis.”

He continued, “What I love about tennis is the gracefulness. It’s an aggressive and powerful game, but it takes touch and finesse. So the dress is feminine, but combines her aggression. It’s partially revealing. It’s asymmetrical. It has a sort of ballerina-esque silhouette to symbolize her grace. It’s not about bells and whistles and tricks. It’s just about it living on the body, and expressing Serena’s spirit with each swing of the racket.”

The collection, dubbed ‘Queen’ contains frothy tutu tennis dresses and sneakers splashed with neon colors.

I’m loving the asymmetrical top. I can’t wait to see how Serena rocks these pieces on the court!

Fashion Bomber of the Day: Noah from Philly

Happy Friday!

In anticipation of Fashion Bomb x Better than Success Brunch heading to Philly on August 18th, we are representing BOMB style from our readers in the City of Brotherly Love. Secure your ticket here!

Today’s Fashion Bomber of the day is Noah from Philly.

He writes, “I would describe my style as laid-back swag. I love high end brands like Gucci, Fendi and Burberry. But, I also love lowkey items like a cute flannel from H&M or a simple black long tee. I love to mix and match and put my own personal touch on looks. It’s hard to pinpoint my style because I really want my style to keep transforming.”

“I see these fashion bombers and I am impressed and amazed. What I love about them is there is no fear. No fear of criticism or judgement, they are simply expressing themselves with their clothes. I pray I can have as much swag as them lol. So really I would say my style is “tailored looks with a street edge’ lol. I love nice-fitting jeans and shirts but I have to bring the Philly swag into anything I wear. Oh and P.S. for the last photo with the orange ensemble it was mad bright that day so no filter lol.”

Fashion Bomb Exclusive Editorial: Jennifer Williams on Basketball Wives, TV Drama, and Living Life with No Regrets

Basketball Wives star Jennifer Williams is the subject of our latest photo shoot, styled by Eric Burns exclusively for Fashion Bomb Daily.

Stylist Eric Burns plucked pieces by Toussaint L Overture, Balenciaga, Charles and Ron, and Ott Dubai, for a shoot he describes as, “A combination of high fashion, sex appeal, and street chic. I wanted to get Jennifer out of her comfort zone a little bit and try something new.”

Basketball Wives just wrapped, but Jennifer admits that her re-entrance on the popular series after a several season hiatus has been rocky. She says, “It has been a trying season on Basketball Wives. I truly don’t have drama in my real life outside of TV so it is a bit exhausting at times. I am catching hell this season but I say this, the real show is behind the scenes!”

As rumors swirl around her skipping out on the Reunion this season, she confesses, “ I try not to live life with regrets. I believe there is a lesson and/or blessing from every experience whether good or bad.”

She continues, “My worst moment was probably going through a court trial with an ex-boyfriend on camera. I wish it was a clean breakup and the unnecessary court drama was not in my life and especially not while I was filming a reality show. However, it probably resulted in my best moment on the show which was going to see a relationship coach. I wanted to take accountability for being in several dysfunctional relationships and see why I was attracting these type of men in my life. I truly feel Spicy Mari helped me in that department so it was a breakthrough moment for me. “

Aside from filming for Basketball Wives, Jennifer stays busy with her online store, Classy Girl Wardrobe (she hopes to open a brick and mortar location soon).

With her full schedule, she still finds time to give back with a passion project she is working on called Finding Home. She explains, “[Finding Home] focuses on helping a handful of homeless people in the community to get their lives back on track and a find home. We don’t get to see compassion a lot on Reality TV…I really want people to believe in humanity again. The homeless situation is a huge epidemic in LA. At the top of the year, I made a list of goals and one of them was to give more….so that is what I’m trying to accomplish.”

All in all, she says, ” The ultimate goal for me is to work on projects that bring me joy.”

September 2018 Issues are All About Black Girl Magic: Beyonce on Vogue, Tiffany Haddish on Glamour, and More!

Tracee Ellis Ross on Elle, Beyonce on Vogue, Tiffany Haddish on Glamour: September Covers of Fashion magazines are all about Black Girl Magic!

Jounalist Lola Ogunnaike was the first the notice this trend, compiling a collage of magazines like Marie Claire, Ebony, and Net a Porter Magazine featuring their covergirls Zendaya, Issa Rae, and Lupita Nyong’o, respectively.
The Hollywood Reporter cast 18-year-old ‘Grownish’ star Yara Shahidi for their Cover.

Shape plucked Aja Naomi King.

The September issue is arguably one of the most important covers in the magazine world. In addition to housing hundreds of advertisements, the fashion heavy glossy is chock full of new trends in beauty and style. It is so key to the magazine business that Vogue made a documentary about the multi month process and pain it takes to put one together.

Representation of black women is typically rare. As Beyonce said in her Vogue article, “When I first started, 21 years ago, I was told that it was hard for me to get onto covers of magazines because black people did not sell.”

These multiple representations of brown beauties of various hues definitely portends a positive change in the industry.
What a wonderful move in the right direction!
We’re definitely here for positive imagery and multiple instances showcasing the beauty of diversity.
