Angela Simmons Exclusive Editorial: “Nothing Was Handed to Me” + The Best Advice She Received from Reverend Run, Russell Simmons, and Kimora Lee

Angela Simmons is a boss.

If you are one of her 6 million followers on Instagram, you would see the levels to her grind. She gets up. She meets. She films. She boxes. She takes care of her adorable two year old son, Sutton Tennyson. She slays.

We all assume that after growing up with her and her family on TV with Run’s House, and watching her now as the star and executive producer of Growing up Hip Hop, that the 31-year-old Queens born Bombshell doesn’t really have to work. But she does. She says, “Nothing at all is handed to me. A lot of [people think], ‘Hey, because your uncle has, you have. Because your dad has, you have.’ It doesn’t work like that. I can’t make a phone call and be like, “Hey, wire me a couple million.’ I get up, I grind, I work, I do everything I need to do to be where I’m at, and I’ll continue to do that. From the outside in, people think that because I come from this Iconic Hip Hop Family, I have it easy. It doesn’t work like that. I work. I do what I do.”

What she has on tap: a new app called Purpose, a network focused on women empowerment. Built not Bought, a fitness initiative that offers workouts, tutorials, and nutrition programs so we can all aspire to slay the way she does in a swimsuit. And a new program called Pressure Makes Diamonds. She explains, “It’s one thing to go through something, it’s another to come through as something stronger. Life has taught me a lot. I’ve been through a lot. As long as you come through as that diamond instead of that coal, you’re great. That’s what I want to push to women. Don’t be afraid to talk about it. [Know that] you’re not alone. You’re not the only person going through it. “

In order to stay balanced, she leans heavily upon meditation, self help, and wise advice from her family.

The best piece of advice she’s received from her father, Reverend Run, “Do your best and forget the rest.” She adds, “My Dad is a great person to speak to, whenever you’re going through something. He always has pushed me [to be the best]. He’s a great positive influence.

The best piece of advice she’s received from her Uncle Russell Simmons? “Focus. Focus in on one thing versus doing many.”

What about Kimora? “She’s always been fun to watch and a good influence all around.”

Angela is certainly an inspiration herself. But does she feel successful? She says, “When you’re younger, success is wealth. For me, being mentally wealthy is more important than anything. We see people lose their lives from not being healthy. We see people lose their lives from just not having the right mental health. Success for me is when you’re winning mentally and spiritually. Success is being overall just well.”

Indeed. Follow Angela on Instagram (if you’re not already) @AngelaSimmons and be sure to tune in not Growing up Hip Hop on We TV.

The State of Fashion May 2019: Cardi B x Fashion Nova, Rihanna x LVMH, The Movement Towards Global Fashion

What a time to be alive.

Mere days after Cardi B’s blockbuster Fashion Nova collection raked in $1 million in one day, LVMH has announced Rihanna’s Fenty brand as their newest fashion acquisition, making Rihanna the first black woman at the helm of an LVMH maison (LVMH, which stands for Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy,  is a French multinational luxury goods conglomerate headquartered in Paris that owns Louis Vuitton, Dior, Givenchy, Fendi, Celine and a host of other brands). Over the past 13 years, as publishers, we’ve seen a shift towards more points of view and a respect for all contributions–regardless of background.

The State of Fashion? A full on embrace of hip hop and the urban culture that has set the tone and the soundtrack of our lives for decades.

It all seemed to kick off earlier this month, as we celebrated architects Misa Hylton and Dapper Dan at the Tribeca Film Festival with the documentary Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion. The film delves into the indelible impact that hip hop has had on self expression, particularly the impact of women’s brash boldness in style. The documentary focuses on Misa Hylton, the creative eye behind the looks of style icons Lil Kim, Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, and others.

Just a few days later, the Olympics of Style aka the Met Gala took place. Attendees were told to adhere to a ‘Camp’ dress code, which refers to anything unnatural, artificial, or over the top. While the term was coined by Susan Sontag, the movement was made a reality by Black Drag Queens, a fact not lost on Pyer Moss and Lena Waithe who paid deference to them on the red carpet (the back of Waithe’s suit boasted the phrase, “Black Drag Queens Invented Camp.” The lines on their suits were lyrics from songs by  Nipsey Hussle, Tupac, Nas, Drake, Meek Mill, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar. The absolute cherry on top were the tiny face sculptures of these famous rappers made by @JohnnyNelsonJewelry, used as buttons).

The aforementioned (Lil Kim, Mary J Blige, Missy, heck even Black Drag Queens) set the stage so that women like Cardi B and Rihanna could take the fashion crown.

From the beginning, Cardi B set out to be a fashion icon, and has taken the world by storm. The other night, at the Met Gala, she easily won best dressed with her dramatic Thom Browne gown, which encompassed the night’s theme in a bold fashion.

Days later, she paired down to a white skirt suit equipped with revealing zips and a neon onesie to celebrate her 2nd collection with rapidly growing fast fashion brand, Fashion Nova. The collection sold out quickly, raking in millions. The woman is on a roll.

Though we missed Rihanna at the Met Gala, we almost knew she had something up her sleeve. The Bajan princess who has been our Fashionista of the Year for decades has collaborated with LVMH on a line, making her the first black woman at the helm of the historic fashion power house. We’ve seen her selling power though her collections with Puma and with her Beauty line. Now it’s time for the Rihanna takeover.

These Bombshells show that anything is possible. And whether you’re from the Bronx or Barbados, if you have a distinct point of view and express yourself boldly and unapologetically, the fashion world will be at your fingertips.

A tendency perhaps frowned upon in the past, but now wholeheartedly embraced.

Rihanna Will Be the First Black Woman at the Helm of an LVMH Maison with Fenty Brand

By: Morgan Smith (@muvamorgs)

Earlier this year, there was much talk about Rihanna and LVMH’s future business together for a potential fashion house by the celebrity entrepreneur. Rihanna confirmed the news this morning by posting “@fenty” on her Instagram story which lead you to a Fenty brand page with a blue and white “Fenty” logo. She also stated in a post, “big day for the culture. Thank you Mr. Arnault for believing in this little girl from the left side of an island, and for giving me the opportunity to grow with you at @LVMH. This is proof that nothing is impossible. Glory to be God.” So, get your coins together for Rihanna’s new fashion ventures as she will now be operating her own fashion house under LVMH.

The Fenty brand will feature ready-to-wear fashion and accessories from sunglasses to jewelry. We’ve spotted already caught a glimpse of her sunglasses, but remember Rihanna’s iconic yellow dress from her Fenty Beauty influencer party in London? No fashion publication, not even Fashion Bomb Daily, was able to identify the brand or designer of the dress. The dress is said to be a Fenty dress as the sleeve possessed a logo which had the word “Fenty” in a unique font. Will this be apart of the collection?

Though Rihanna already has business with LVMH as her Fenty Beauty line operates under the company, she is making history and breaking boundaries with this new fashion label. According to the Business of Fashion, Fenty is now the first fashion house launched from the ground since Christian Lacroix in 1987. Not to mention, Rihanna is now the first woman and create an original brand at LVMH and the first Black woman at the top of an LVMH brand.

The first collection for the Fenty brand is set to release on May 22nd in Paris. The brand is anticipated to be as huge and successful as the Fenty Beauty line and will continue to uphold Rihanna’s values of diversity and inclusion.

Fashion Bomb Daily’s Claire Sulmers in Forbes Magazine

Forbes magazine writer Danielle D. Hughes interviewed our creator and founder Claire Sulmers for an article entitled, “From Ivy League to Impeccable Influence: Claire Sulmers is Living “The Bomb Life.

She writes, “

Claire Sulmers writes her own rules.

After graduating from Harvard with a dual degree in French and African-American studies, she decided to leave her ivy league past and pursue her passion for fashion. Thus, FashionBombDaily was born. Sulmers launched the blog in 2006 after becoming fed up with the lack of diverse opportunities offered to her in pursuit of following her dream of becoming a full-time fashion writer.

As Editor-in-Chief of the rapidly growing multi-cultural fashion blog with a current following of 1.3 million and readership of close to 2.4 million, Sulmers is now looking to expand on not only the influence of her massive brand – but on her own as well.

We got a chance to chat about the art behind selling influence, the importance of highlighting designers of color and why growing an organic following is essential to a powerful brand.”
