Claire’s Life: Revlon’s Step Out of Line Event feat Mette Towley and ASAP Ferg

I dusted off my summer shorts last night, and headed Uptown for a Revlon event, announcing a collaboration with dancer and artist Mette Towley, followed by a performance by ASAP Ferg.

Mette Towley is an amazing dancer and creative, who was told she was ‘too bold’ as a young girl. Now she lives her life fearlessly, and celebrated with Revlon to “Step Out of Line.” She blessed the campaign with a video.

After the crowd enjoyed the video, we were treated to a fun performance by A$Ap Ferg. He performed a host of his hits (New Level, Shabba Ranks), along with a new song called “Wig On the Floor” that had all the young’ns twerking.

As for me, I kept my wig on my head, and celebrated the night in a pink cheetah print dress by Sai Sankoh and LTD Creations shorts, both from FashionBombDailyShop.com. I accessorized with Hanifa mules and a Christian Dior bag from A Second Chance Resale. Revlon Ultra HD Vinyl lip polish in Cherry on Top kept my lips popping all night.

I loved learning more about Revlon products and witnessing their embrace of bold, fearless females!

You Should Know: Dapper Dan’s Memoir ‘Made in Harlem’ Is Set To Release July 9th!

When we think of Hip-Hop, a culture that gave a voice to the voiceless, a cause to the rebels, and a harmonious fight within a community that was poverty stricken, it would be an insult to not mention the impact of one it’s pioneers Dapper Dan. In just short of two weeks on July 9th, Dapper Dan’s memoir Made In Harlem: A Memoir will hit the shelves and we’re ecstatic about it!

If most aren’t aware as they should be, the culture that is Hip-Hop, became a movement derived from the inner-city youth of New York that shaped innovators and originated most styles reflected in current modern day trends. Amongst the detrimental crack epidemic that hit the streets such as Harlem, which notably became the ‘Cocaine 80s’, hood legends that profited off of the rise of it, and artists within rap music too, turned to couturier and tailor Dapper Dan.

His twist within luxury brand’s logos, made it affordable, original, and fly for true hood allure. With his fashion serving as a reflectorial attempt of extravagance, he made the idea of “knockoffs” a thing you’d take pride in with his creative reproduction of it all.

And as profitable of a culture it is today, many before believed Hip-Hop to be a fad however, and a nuisance that has made nonsensical noise. Only being “trendy” and “chic”  when you fast forward decades years later, seeing it in countless fashion magazines black people had to go to ropes to get truly recognized, and accredited in. But Hip-Hop has always been a reflection of the street’s true and raw reality.

Much of that is reflected in Dapper Dan’s story of being a prolific figure, that spearheaded a movement of self expression within fashion for the black community. But to know him as being a living legend, we must first know his full story in his own words. I’m sure you bombshells and bombers are anticipating it’s release like we are. Vogue Italia Posts (Then Deletes) Image of Black Man Wearing Ku Klux Klan Hood, Conceived by Artist Mous Lamrabat

Vogue Italia came under fire this morning for posting the below image, conceived by artist Mous Lamrabat, which shows a black man wearing a reinterpretation of a Ku Klux Klan hood, equipped with a Nike swoosh.

The Ku Klux Klan also known as the KKK is a white supremacist hate group that terrorized African-Americans and minorities beginning in the late 1860’s and continued on well into the 50’s, 60’s, and beyond. With their trademark hoods, they left their marks with burning crosses, and underscored their mission of ‘purifying the American population,’ by lynching, murdering, and burning.

@MousLamrabat explained his position, saying, “KousKousKlan
Fear is a tricky thing, what if we take symbols that fear us and bring it in a way that it becomes something we can smile at?”

But this is no smiling matter. The vestiges of this era of white supremacy still live on today, with nationalist rhetoric underscored by our own President. Minorities are still terrorized. We have not overcome–yet. This artistry is in poor taste.

Mous LamRabat must be aware, as he deleted his post while we were penning this piece. He replaced his hooded photo with that of a man with balloons in the place of his head, writing, “Maybe this is better than… I’m very sorry but ignorants won again…”

Over 10+ years of reporting on fashion foibles and racial insensitivity disguised as artistry, we often ponder: WHY? Why dredge up images of a dreadful past for amusement? Why do the models willingly participate? Why is our painful history, dotted with inhumane and cruel suffering, a sore scab that keeps getting picked off…in the name of fashion?

Claire’s Life: Girl + Hair’s Meet N Greet at Target!

Happy Monday, Bombers and Bombshells!

This past Saturday, I made my way down to Target at Brooklyn Junction to introduce shoppers to Girl + Hair, a new dermatologist designed hair care system designed to take care of natural hair, particularly under protective styles like wigs, weaves, or braids.

The product was created by Physician and Dermatologist resident Camille Verovic, Founder of Girl & Hair Under Hair Care. A lot of times, we can just slap a wig on our head and figure out nurturing our natural coils. Girl + Hair is the answer, introducing light products with low build up that smell fantastic.

Saturday afternoon, we handed out free samples to naturalists, gave away product, and interviewed each other!

Want to try? Visit GirlandHair.com and tell them I sent you.

*For the day, I wore Sophia Webster heels and a dress from FashionBombDailyShop.com.

Hot! or Hmm…?

Do the BET Awards Need a Style Intervention?

The BET Awards went down last night at the Staples Center in LA! And while there were many ‘Bomb’ looks that cascaded down the blue carpet

… it seemed that many of you felt the overall style was more Hmm…than Hot!

@ChampagneStyyle wrote, “These BET Awards are looking like Fashion Nova,” @.Anglin decreed, “All these red carpet looks have been extremely disappointing…“, and @SadimsLady typed, “I’m disappointed in most of the looks I’ve seen thus far 😐”

You guys are a tough crowd: this we know! But maybe it’s time for the BET Awards to have a style intervention? Some of you may remember when Anna Wintour revamped the Tony Awards back in 2014.

After calling the red carpet a ‘disaster,’ she partnered with Costume Designer William Ivey Long to change the backdrops, populate the guest list with models, and gently offer her input on people’s looks (we don’t know the inner workings of the process, but it seems as if maybe celebs had to ‘ok’ their looks with Anna before they hit the red carpet). Look at Condola Rashad’s glow up from 2012 to 2017 (Images c/o Getty via Who What Wear).

Wow!

While the BET Awards might not need that level of hand holding, would it hurt to at the very least insist on a uniform color scheme or provide people some guidelines so that they look their very best for their big moment?

What do you think? Should the BET Awards implement a dress code? Do they need a style intervention?

*Hey BET, thank us later. And if you make a change next year, maybe just give us a little shout out:)
