Nite Cap Founder Is Being Celebrated for “Inventing” the Silk Bonnet and Social Media Calls Out Cultural Appropriation

Recently, an article was posted in Fashion Magazine with an interview with Sarah Marantz Lindenberg who is the founder of the brand known as NiteCap. NiteCap supplies women with silk hair wraps for the price of $98 that are meant to bring benefits to the hair and skin simultaneously. Sarah, who happens to be a Caucasian woman, claimed in the interview that she came up with idea for the silk hair wrap after meeting with a dermatologist who suggested that she should sleep with her hair out of her face to prevent breakouts. Once the article was posted on the Fashion Magazine’s Twitter account, social media quickly reacted to the price and claims of inventing an item that is nothing new to Black women: the silk bonnet.

Black social media users took the article and brand itself as a form of cultural appropriation and were ready to clapback immediately. Comments included “not a while lady pretending she invented sleep bonnets and selling them for $100” and “my grandmother, mama, sister, and all the black females in my communities have wearing a NiteCap for years…$6.99 Walgreens or Target…$4.00 Beauty Supply Store.”

Since then, NiteCap has responded by releasing a statement via Instagram addressing the recent comments made toward the brand:

Exclusive: LA Meets NYC as Sorella Teams Up With FUBU for 90s Inspired Collection

Old school brands are teaming up with the new brands on the block and rebooting the classics with modern appeals for the Gen Zers. Since its inception, Sorella has been all about encouraging hustle and empowering women with its Girls Tour initiative. While the collaboration with FUBU is meant to convey the clashing of eras, it also is meant to represent the boldness and excellence of the wearer which is women in this case. Classic and modern elements come together as a celebration for a new era of women who have “the courage to go against the grain and constantly evolve”.

How to Become a Leader in Your Girl Squad

You adore your family, your pets and even some of your co-workers, but you Love Love Love (with three capital L’s) your girl squad.

You and your best friends have this whole #squadgoals thing down pat. You enjoy your girl squad so much, you are either hanging with them or are missing them and planning your next hangout. While some people might claim that you can only have one best friend at a time, you know this is not true. You have been blessed with five BFFs and you would do anything for any one of them, anytime.

Here’s how to continue to lead your girls into squad success:

Becoming an Expert 101

You might think that being a leader means that you should know everything about everything. It’s actually the opposite. True leaders pretty much focus on one subject and learn as much as they can about it. This is one reason your girl squad is so amazing; you each bring a specific talent or knowledge to the group. So instead of spreading yourself too thin and trying to be the fashion/cooking/philosophy/shopping guru, think about what you really love to learn about and let that guide you to your subject leader status.

Be the Foodie Expert

If you adore eating out, cooking gourmet meals at home and always know about the latest and coolest places to grab brunch, you can become the foodie leader of your girl squad. When you are planning where to head for lunch, you might suggest the adorbs new Italian café in the next town over, or suggest that you each bring a fave food and dine al fresco in the park by the lake.

Become the Go To Makeup Expert

If your purse always contains at least five lipsticks, you pore over fashion magazines as soon as they hit the stands and you watch at least half a dozen YouTube makeup artists on the regular, you have what it takes to be the makeup expert in your squad. To become even more knowledgeable and help supply your besties with the most current shades of makeup and the best personal care products, you could even look into making money with Amway as an Independent Business Owner. When partnered with the company, you can set your own hours and when your BFFs need some new eyeliner or facial cream, they can come right to you.

Adore Fashion? Share the Love!

Every girl squad needs a leader in fashion; you know, the one who is not only wearing the most stylish outfits, but knows exactly where to get them, what colors are in or out this season and maybe how to save money on looking fab. If this sounds up your alley, by all means go for it and read and watch all you can on current styles and trends and which stores have the cutest outfits for any body size.

You love your besties and would do anything for them. By taking an honest look at your talents and interests, you can take a leadership role in your girl squad and share your expert knowledge and passion with everyone.

Convos with Claire Miami 2019 Sponsored by Urban Skin RX, Clem Swimwear, Isoken Ofe, and Deleon Tequila Featuring Amara la Negra, Trina, Rico Love, Venita McCollum, Rachel Roff, and J’Lysa Wilson

Convos with Claire sizzled onto South Beach with a scintillating Silver & Gold theme for the first Miami edition of our networking franchise!

Guests sashayed down to the swanky Betsy Hotel’s metallic trimmed B Bar for yummy hors d’oeuvres, Deleon Tequila Cocktails, music by DJ JFK, and fashion.

We had a star studded line up, so we got our conversations underway quickly, kicking off with J’Lysa Wilson of Clem Swimwear. Wilson shared an inspiring story of attempting to make headway into the industry before starting her own line of sassy suits. She underscored the unique details of her monokinis, bikinis, and one pieces, and urged every entrepreneur to never give up on their dreams.

Next up was Rachel Roff, owner of the skincare and beauty brand Urban Skin RX. Rachel and I chatted about some of my favorite products (read about them here). Rachel has been able to survive and thrive in her competitive industry by providing great products, stellar customer service, and not being afraid to give away products in order to attract new clients.

Venita McCollum is an author, fashionista, and the mother of Lil Yachty, a multi million dollar rapper. For our Convo, she talked about her book, Raising a Rapper, where she offers business and life tips on nurturing a child’s talent while also protecting them. It’s a must read. Learn more about her book at RaisingaRapper.com.

Singer and Entertainer Amara la Negra and platinum producer Rico Love shared stories of career highs and lows, and offered their individual definitions of success. For Amara, it was to leave a lasting legacy. For Rico, it was to be as educated as possible on a multitude of subjects and to ultimately be happy with the impact and influence he has had on the world.

And lastly, the beautiful Trina discussed her new album: The One, which was 6 years in the making. She looked bomb in Chanel, and we closed out the party with her song, “BAPS,” which is a certified banger.

Bombers and Bombshell glittered and glowed in the lights.

Veronica Vega, Prince, Bobby Lytes, and many more stopped by in fabulous ensembles.

Radio DJ Supacindy was a vision in gold.

Boutique owner Jamaican Sacha showed some thigh in a high low dress. Bomb!

Fashion Bomb staff members Askia Abdul and Naj the Godson shined in gold.

Gold was also the call for Bombshell IsokenOfe:

It was a fun time!

Convos with Claire Miami was a certified success, and we can’t wait for our next stop: LA!!!!!

My Favorite Products from Urban Skin RX: Even Tone Cleansing Bar, Dark Spot Rapid Repair, Warming Pumpkin Mask, and more!

So I, like you, have been hearing about Urban Skin RXproducts for quite some time! I was first introduced to the brand ages ago, and was lured in by their travel friendly Super C Serum!

Over the years, I have come to love their line, and remained open to trying new products. For the past few months, I have been hooked on their Even Tone Cleansing Bar and Dark Spot Rapid Repair:

The Even Tone Cleansing Bar is a bit of a strange concept at first: soap in a jar? But Yes! The soap works up a wonderful lather and comes with sponges inside. I’ve also found that it is perfect for travel.

Then we come to their Rapid Dark Spot Repair. I’ll admit. I used to get pimples and I used to pick them, which resulted in dark spots. The Dark Spot rapid return goes on thick, makes my skin feel refreshed, AND gets rid of dark spots.

I’m funny about my skin, and would never use products that would compromise my face! These products manage to make my skin feel and look clear, fresh, and glowing!

If you haven’t tried Urban Skin RX, what are you waiting for?

See more at UrbanSkinRX.com and tell them I sent you!

Taina Stunts in Fashion Nova’s Red ‘Nora’ Set!

I don’t know about you other Bombshells, but for me, Summertime calls for affordable and figure flattering fits! As hot as the weather is, no one wants to spend a great amount of time finding something to wear. The idea is to stay cool, and look good while doing it. Like Taina Williams on vacay in Fashion Nova’s ‘Nora’ Skirt Set, she’s comfortable yet stylish. Such a simple and flaunting set not only has a stretchy material, it comes in grey as well. Find here for a steal of $35, Bombshells!

Draya Michele Brought the Heat In This Snakeskin Fashion Nova Dress!

We can always count on Fashion Nova to provide Fashionistas with the hottest styles for the most affordable prices! Whether flashy, simple or sophisticated in styling, they have the perfect dresses to compliment any body type. Bombshell Draya Michele slayed in one of Fashion Nova’s steamy dresses known as the ‘Wildly Colorful’ One Shoulder Mini Dress. Not only does the styling of it give off a fresh feel, Draya makes the dress look exquisitely expensive that it’s a shocker how great of a steal this item is! Because of the bold patterning of the Mini Dress, it’s best to keep it simple with accessories. Perhaps a nude heel, or even black like Draya preferred. You know what they say, Bombshells: less is definitely more!

Beyoncé Was a Golden Goddess in a Cong Tri Gown at the UK Premiere of The Lion King

With the Lion King release inching closer and closer, we have been seeing a lot of Beyoncé as she has been making her rounds at the big city premieres for the movie! This past weekend, Beyoncé visited London alongside husband Jay-Z for the premiere of the upcoming live-action Lion King film.

Beyoncé was giving us some golden hour vibes in a Cong Tri custom gown. The gown consisted of elegant Mediterranean goddess drape detailing in a popping gold, making the Queen literally look like royalty. Speaking of royalty, Beyoncé even shared a hug and a few words with the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle. Beyoncé and Jay-Z paid homage the Duchess in a video celebrating Black History Month and thanking the Brits for their Best International Group Award with Meghan Markle behind them resembling Mona Lisa.
