Amanda Gorman, the youngest ever Inaugural Poet, wore a Prada Double-breasted natté toile yellow coat, white poplin shirt, black leather pencil skirt with black Saffiano leather pumps and a fiery red satin headband while reading at the Inauguration of the 46th President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington D.C on Wednesday, January 20th.

She accessorized her look with gold hoops and a birdcage ring gifted to her by Oprah (the birdcage ring was  a tribute to Maya Angelou).

Congrats to this young Queen on this historic day!

The Politics of Fashion: Vice President Elect Kamala Harris and Dr. Jill Biden in American Designers Markarian & Christopher John Rogers on Inauguration Day; Melania Trump in Parisian Designer Chanel

Fashion is powerful, even when it comes to politics. What you wear communicates your values and can give the world a peak into your thoughts and perspective.

Just today, as we celebrate the historic inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, we see a tale of two Americas. Vice President Elect Kamala Harris made a point to choose African-American designers for Pre-Inauguration and Inauguration Day: CFDA Award winners Kerby Jean Raymond of Pyer Moss and Christopher John Rogers.

For Inauguration Day, former First Lady Michelle Obama also chose a black designer: Sergio Hudson.

Dr. Jill Biden also wore American designers for Inauguration Day activities: Jonathan Cohen and Markarian:

Choosing American designers shows an embrace of home grown talent, and in Harris and Obama’s case, an endorsement of the talent of an underserved and frequently overlooked community.

It is telling that on this day, Melania Trump wore Parisian designers: Chanel, Hermes, and Christian Louboutin:

As she has communicated in the past, she doesn’t seem to care about what her clothing might say.

As frivolous as fashion may seem to some, what you choose to wear speaks VOLUMES about your character.

We are elated for this change of office, and what that change portends not just for the fashion industry but for America and the world.

Former First Lady, author and speaker Michelle Obama wore a Sergio Hudson look which included a matching coat along with a sweater-pants combination in a wine-burgundy color while attending today’s presidential inauguration.

Michelle Obama’s inauguration look was styled by her partner-in-style Meredith Koop who served as her stylist during her time as the First Lady of the United States. Meredith Koop dressed Obama in a Sergio Hudson Collection 7 look for today’s momentous occasion. Sergio Hudson is a Black designer whose designs have been favored by many celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Tracee Ellis Ross, Beyoncé, and many more.

Dr. Jill Biden Wears Markarian Blue Coat to 2021 President Joe Biden Inauguration

The coat, with its dark blue velvet collar and cuffs, is worn over a tapered dress with a chiffon bodice and scalloped skirt. The neckline of the dress is hand embellished with Swarovski pearls and crystals in a delicate floral pattern. The same Swarovski crystals adorn the coat and dress, subtly reflecting the light. The color blue was chosen for the pieces to signify trust, confidence, and stability.

The look was carefully crafted by a small team in the heart of New York City’s Garment Center and hand finished by O’Neill in her West Village studio. Alexandra is incredibly humbled to be a small part of such a historic moment.

Melania Trump Wears Chanel Pre-Fall 2020 Runway, an Hermes Crocodile Bag, and Christian Louboutin Pumps to Exit the White House with Donald Trump

While most women in the White House take care to patronize American Designers during their tenure (Just last night Kamala Harris wore Haitian American Designer Pyer Moss while Dr. Jill Biden wore New York based Jonathan Cohen), Melania Trump trumped the White House trend, exiting her office in high priced runway looks straight from Paris: A Chanel Runway ensemble, an Hermes Crocodile Birkin Bag, and Christian Louboutin Pumps:

Her look debuted in Chanel’s Pre-Fall Métiers d’Art 2019/2020 runway.

Her Birkin bag starts at $55,000 on the resale market:

Similar Louboutin heels start at $695.

Her look is very ‘rich’ and a bit tone deaf. How appropriate.

Tips for Choosing a Jacket for a Woman Based on Her Style

A lot of women love clothes, but what they may love even more than buying their own clothes is having clothes bought for them. This combines the excitement of having a new piece with the thrill of also having a surprise. If you want to choose a jacket for a woman but aren’t sure where you should begin, here are a couple of handy tips on choosing the best jacket based on different styles.

Pick a Color Scheme

Finding a nice jacket for women may seem like a daunting task. One of the first things you can do is pick a color scheme to look at, which will rule out a lot of the options of jackets. If you are looking online, you can often do searches which will help you narrow down colors, so if you want something colorful, you know you can opt out of neutral colors such as black, white or beige. Alternatively, if you know that the person you are buying for doesn’t usually opt for colorful clothing, you could do the opposite and exclusively focus on these colors.

Look at Her Other Clothes

If you are trying to look for a new jacket and can’t quite make a decision, try and observe the other items of clothing that she tends to wear so that you can get some inspiration. This is one of the best things you can do, so you can try and appropriately match the jacket to her regular style. By doing this, you will be more likely to get her a successful purchase and something that she can wear often.

It is also good to observe her style so that you don’t buy something that clashes. More than simply thinking about whether the jacket itself is nice, you also need to consider what she could pair it with. It may feel like a time-consuming process, but it will be so worth it and finding an interesting jacket for women isn’t too hard when you know what you’re looking for.

Make Sure You Know Her Size

Having a jacket that fits well is just as important as having a jacket that looks good. If it doesn’t fit properly, it may end up looking pretty unflattering and won’t be worn as a result. The best thing to do is find out her size either by asking, or if the jacket is a surprise gift, then try and have a look at the sizes of some of her other jackets. A jacket also needs to fit properly to look good and keep the heat in, which is its primary function!

Jackets are such necessary and everyday pieces of clothing that your purchase will always be worthwhile. However, to make sure that it is a jacket that a woman would like to wear every day, it is definitely worth giving it a little bit of thought. This can actually be really fun too – so try and change your mindset and look at it as a fun project rather than a chore!
