Reader Day!

Hi Guys!
So today will be Reader Day on the Fashion Bomb!
You might be saying, “Claire, isn’t every day a reader day?”
Well, in theory it is. And in practice.
Whatever.

Today I’m going to tap reader knowledge to leave a bit of the ‘question answering’ up to you! But don’t worry, it won’t be all hard work: I’m supplying a couple cool prizes to a special Fashion Bomber with great sleuthing skills.
Don’t fret, I solved a few mail bombs for ya:
Allons-y!

Reader Gina says, “I’ve been loving Queen Latifah’s style lately...”
…How can I recreate her look from the Mad Money premiere — especially those gorgeous leopard print d’orsays?”
The Queen is indeed fierce! Get her look for less with the following:

Left to Right: Lotta Stensson black lace dress, $153, www.bluefly.com; Nina Calhoun d’Orsay Sandal, $79, www.nordstrom.com.

Next, reader Gabrielle from Little Rock, Arkansas loved Rihanna’s boots in this picture…
…she says, “I was surfing the web (at work…shame, shame) and saw none other than Rihanna rocking a pair of all black boots that tie up behind the knee. I definitely don’t have her budget but I would love to see some alternatives to what she is sportin.
Sure!
We all know Rihanna invests in her wardrobe, so it’s no surprise she’s wearing these Manolo Blahnik Toppers….
…on sale for $725 at www.barneys.com.
If you want a few affordable alternatives, I’ve got you covered! Try the following:
Left to Right: BCBGirls ‘Chill’ Boot, $229, www.nordstrom.com; Nine West Voot Boot, $220, zappos.com
Next, Shari says, “Can you please help me find this leather jacket Kim Porter is wearing…”
“…or something similar?!?”
Hey Shari. You’ve got great taste! Bomber Jackets are indeed cute, and Kim’s version pops in a bold, glossy color. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the exact match (chances are she used some Diddy money to get hers custom made), but you can go with these to get the look:
Top Row: D&G Dolce & Gabbana Gold Leather Bomber Jacket, $1,200, www.nordstrom.com; Doma Bomber Leather Jacket, $595, www.madisonlosangeles.com.
Middle Row: Lindsay Lohan Leather Jacket, $92, www.asos.com.
Bottom Row: SSGT Bomber Jacket, $120, www.forever21.com; Lux Faux Leather Bomber Jacket, $128, www.urbn.com.
Fashion Bomb newcomer Sarah said, “I was wondering if you could help me find who the designer of the purse Ashley Olsen has on…PLEASE!!”
I need it in my life!!! Thank you!
Hey! The Fashion Bomb is down for diversity, so this question’s game.
I did quick web search, and found that Ashley is wearing Givenchy’s Nightingale purse
Get it for $1,395 at www.barneys.com.
Lastly, Chisa says, “I absolutely love the shirt that the girl in this picture is wearing…
“…Can you please help me find it or something like it? Thanks!
Hey! Couldn’t find an exact match, but this Sheer Animal Print Top comes close:
…get it for $15.80 at www.forever21.com.
My job here is done.
Now for a few questions for the group. Comment if you can help!
Reader Mecca says, “Do you know of any websites or clothing stores with fashionable/trendy styles that cater to tall women? I am 5’11 with very long legs and I wear a 36 inch inseam. When I wear regular length dresses, they look too short on me, and the long dresses arent long enough to fall at the ankle. I find that if a store/website offers tall/long styles for pants they are usually not all that cute, just basic and boring styles. Thanks!
Any long legged ladies want to interject?
Also, reader Uyi says, “I’m a frequent (daily) visitor of your site and I wanted to ask you if you knew of any sites that sold size 11-12 1/2 shoes for women. I stand at 5’10 and as you can imagine its very hard to find shoes my size.”
If you know, share the wealth!
Thanks guys!
Now, for the contest.
Emerald has been the color du jour, showing up on many red carpets…
…in flowing Grecian as well as more body contoured styles.
In the spirit of going green, I’m going to give whoever can tell me the make of Gabrielle Union’s dress (or find something close)…
and the make of Beyonce’s bag…
…this fantastic green onyx accented 24k gold Oak Leaf Necklace ($178 value) by Bridget Lynne Designs (www.bridget-lynne-designs.com)…
…along with a $50 gift certificate to the super delicious French restaurant Bruno Jamais (www.brunojamais.com)…
..located at 81st and Madison in New York. (And if you’re not in New York, you have six months to plan a trip and use it!) The restaurant is blocks away from all of the upper east side’s museums and hotels such as The Carlyle, The Mark and The Stanhope, and serves yummy treats like Lobster Brulee and Foie Gras. Yum!
So e-mail me at thefashionbomb@gmail.com with the scoop. I’ll reveal the winner plus the answers next week.
Happy Searching!

On the Scene: Bethann Hardison’s Out of Fashion: Absence of Color Black Models in Fashion Talk

Hey!

If you’ve been reading for a while, you’d know that this is the third talk in an action minded series focused on the lack of ethnic models on catwalks, in magazines, and gracing the covers of publications.
The first forum was open to about seventy well plucked people, and included the likes of Tyson, Iman, Liya Kebede, and Naomi Campbell…

blacks-in-fashion-1

The second talk, at the New York Public Library…
…was open to the public, and was therefore packed to the brim with about 200 people, including the utterly talented designer Tracy Reese…
…and writer Michaela Angela Davis.
The third, last night, had the biggest showing yet…
…about 275 designers, editors, journalists, models, and model agents packed into the Bowery Hotel to rally for the cause.
The numbers are slowly starting to grow, signaling a real movement. Instead of this issue being talked about then swept under the rug, Bethann is making it a point to mobilize, get answers, and hold people accountable. I can’t tell you how many representatives from modeling agencies, as well as stylists and designers stood up to defend their practices, or promise to do better (The creative director of Ford Models was there, as well as the head of the North American division of Elite, who offered $1,000 to sponsor the next forum).
An interesting note: Andre Leon Talley wrote in from campaigning for Barack in Chicago to say, “This struggle is so important to all of us on so many levels…We must continue to dialogue, as a change we can believe in has to happen.” Andre, whose New Years fashion resolution was to, “order custom Charvet tennis picque shorts and silk kneesocks the color of clotted cream,” is down for the cause (and for Barack)? Really? Well, it’s good to know that he’s behind this. Hopefully he can start rocking the boat a bit with his buddy Anna over at Vogue–but let’s hope he doesn’t fall out!
So the talk got underway, and a few fashion models took the stage…
…to voice their concerns. It seemed as if every model had the same exact story: They have a look and an amazing portfolio, go to modeling agencies seeking work, but are told that the agency already has ‘one black girl’ and they don’t need another.
Damon Dash also rolled through with Jim Jones….
..and talked about the importance of mentoring in the industry (I think he put it as ‘We need to watch each other’s backs‘). Good point. It seemed as if representatives from every facet of the industry were there. If we all made it a point to bestow a bit of knowledge on each other, reach up instead of pulling down, we could move the issue forward at a heightened pace.
While a ‘conclusion’ was not reached, this talk won’t be the last. Bethann promises to continue having these to let people air their grievances (I have a few…), and motivate until something concrete is accomplished (i.e. more ethnic models on catwalks, more designers of color, more editors of color, more diversity in the fashion industry as a whole).
With Fashion Week about a week away, it’s going to be interesting to ONCE AGAIN see if diversity has increased on the catwalks (and in the tents). I’ll keep an eye peeled!

*On a related note, Fashion Bomb reader Leigh recently wrote me the following, “I am currently a student in Pennsylvania but I’ll be moving back to NYC in May. Do you know of any modeling agencies that are friendly to African American women? It would be great to get a few modeling jobs to help pay expensive NYC bills. I am not runway thin by any means, but print work or agencies looking for thin and athletic women would be the most helpful. Even if you do not know any agencies I still appreciate your time and effort.” From last night’s talk, Leigh, your prospects are looking quite dim, but reps from Elite and Ford were there, so try knocking on their doors. Anyone else have any pointers?
*Want to recap? Read about the first meeting here, and the second meeting here. Don’t know Bethann? Read my post about her here.
*For the next one, I’ll make sure to post the invite so that every single one of you in New York can come (we can have a Fashion Bomb contingent!).

Intern Designer Spotlight: Jay Wilson

Hey!

So I promised that in the New Year I’d take the Fashion Bomb international. While I meant that would involve me traveling the world delivering hot fashion on a platter, we luckily have a few international readers who are willing to take the reigns (for now).
Our first intern post of the year is from Natalie, a London resident and Fashion Bomb fanatic, who wanted to spread the word about UK designer Jay Wilson.
Enjoy!
**************************************************************************
Hi all Fashion Bomb Readers, this is Natalie a London Intern! I’m representing for all you international readers. Well, here goes…
As another season of Big Brother breaks out, so does another YOUNG talented designer…
Jay Wilson!
Jay is a 19 year old fashion designer and student at Central Saint Martins. He hails from South East London, and is also currently on Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack with a full house of talented housemates.
Jay has made many achievements in the fashion world at a young age and in a short period of time. He may be a student, but he’s had his collections shown at Caribbean and New York Fashion Week.

His two main lines are Jay Wilson and B.L.I.N.D. which is an acronym for Be Loved In Notorious Doses. B.L.I.N.D. is to his Ready-to-Wear collection while the Jay Wilson line looks to be more haute-couture.
A few looks from Jay’s Autumn/Winter Collection titled “The Dress Up Box”:
He likes neutral colors, and mixes it up with casual styles like hoodies…
Adds dashes of colour to brighten up the fabric…
And plays with mixing two styles together like shift dresses with bubble hems…
…and puff sleeves with bubble hems.
His Spring/Summer Collection, “ A Mother’s Love For Her Child,” was shown at New York Fashion Week 2006:

He loves brighter neutral colours accented by gold and straight cuts (I love the chains on the bag)…
Flaunts dresses with big bows on the shoulders with hanging empire lines…
And showcases dresses in fair colours to highlight feminine ruffles and paneling details…
Jay Wilson is planning his third collection and the launch of B.L.I.N.D. in March 2008.
Check him out on his blog (www.jaywilsonbelieves.blogspot.com) or on his website (www.jaywilsonbelieves.com).
Thanks for reading!
**********************************************************************

Thanks Natalie!

So what did you think? Is Jay Wilson the bomb?

Real Style

Happy Tuesday!
So I haven’t really had a Real Style for men since the New Year, and on Saturday, I ran into a kid in the train station who definitely had his own thing going on…

img_0198

…this self described ‘Retro Kid’ reminded me of the good old days when I obsessed over Bobby Brown, the Boyz, and Al B Sure…

He was rocking the slanted high top fade with a blonde streak, a bright colored jacket, patchworked jeans, and Nike high tops (oops, just noticed the Africa medallion!).
The 80’s are coming back, but are we down for it?

*So I was indulgently digging into my February issue of Vogue…

…and who should pop up on one of the very last pages, but one of our favorite black socialites…
Genevieve Jones!!!
She’s featured in a spread lauding “Three Jewelry Stars on the Rise.” So Madame Jones is now a jewelry designer??? I thought she was an interior decorator…or a muse…or something. Anyway, her pieces–encrusted with topaz, sapphires, and diamonds–retail for $895-$5,000 and are inspired by ethereal, whimsical ideas like “spirals, stars, and UFO’s.” Sure….I guess we all gotta eat, right? Click image to see her creations in all their glory.

Mail Bombs

It’s the Friday before a long weekend!
Let’s not waste a minute!

First, Loria from Houston loved Kerry Washington’s look at the BET Honors Awards:
She says, “I’m looking for a dress in this style in white, cream, or off-white. Can you help?
Hey there! I found this ABS by Allen Schwartz One Shoulder Beaded Gown…
…that fits the bill. Get it for $528 at www.nordstrom.com.
If that’s too pricey, I think this Rachel Pally Long Twist Shoulder Dress could work…
…get it for $242 at shopbop.com
Where you going in that dress, girrrl?
Reader Nieisha must also have a hot party to go to, because she loved Kim Kardashian’s look from New Years Eve…
…she says, “Kim looked so hot on New Years Eve. Who makes her dress?!?”
Kim is wearing a Just Cavalli creation, which seemed to be tailored just for her. You can get a similar dress with this $595 Just Cavalli Butterfly Print Dress…
…from Saks.
Um, where’s the party?
Now, what would a Mail Bombs post be without a question about Rihanna???
Golden Honey says, “Can you please help me find the top portion of Rihanna’s dress?”
“...I suppose it is corset, but I would prefer something without a belt just plain. Maybe a Corset definitely not a tube top. Please help!!”
Try these:
Left to Right: Coleen McLaughlin Cupped Satin Corset, $80, www.asos.com; Strapless Corset, $58, www.victoriassecret.com; Seamless Bustier, $78, www.victoriassecret.com.

Next, reader Stacey says, “Girl! I need your help. I need this dress in my life!
“…Please help me find it or something like it. I love the color combination for spring!
Hey! You’ve got great taste! That’s a Diane von Furstenberg creation from her Spring 2007 line. (I know, I have it in black!)
That dress is long gone from stores, but you can get a similar look (I think) with this Sleeveless Deep V-Neck Mini Dress
…for $168 at www.ronherman.com. If that doesn’t work, there’s always eBay!
Next, Mecca says, “I have a girlfriend that is really in love with these $200 boots from Ugg’s, but does not want to pay a fortune for it…

…Can you help me find a similar boot for less?
Well, those boots aren’t quite my taste, but ask and ye shall receive. I couldn’t find floral embroidered suede boots, but I did find the following Wellie Styles that could give off the same effect…
Left to Right: ASOS Printed Flower Wellie Boot, $41, www.asos.com; Flower Stripe Rain Boots, $20, www.target.com.
…throw on some wool socks and you’ll be fine in a snowstorm!  For less than $50, you can’t go wrong!

In another head scratcher, Brandi says, “I’m a new Fashion Bomber who is slowly turning into a fashionista! I saw this recent photo of Erykah Badu...”
… and her shoes are fierce!! Can you please tell me who these shoes are by??
Hey! You’re right, the shoes are fierce! The look, not so much.
Erykah’s no bag lady, as she’s sporting these $675 Yves Saint Laurent Tribute Canvas Pumps
…from www.bergdorfgoodman.com.
If you don’t have an extra $675 hidden under your bed, I felt that these Ilonna Peep Toe’s by Guess…

..could give off a similar effect if worn with pants. Get ’em for $109 at www.endless.com.
Lastly, a question for the group:
Jess says, “Call me cheap but I just can’t make myself pay top dollar for leggings. In a pinch I purchased a couple of $26 pairs at American Apparel but felt ripped off. I found cheaper pairs elsewhere but found the weight and quality not to my satisfaction. Can you recommend a place to get a good, sturdy, comfy pair of leggings for less than $20?
I’m stumped on this one! Thoughts?

Style File: Naomi Campbell

Happy almost Friday!
So so far in the New Year, we’ve had plenty of Real Style, Mail Bombs, and Cool Online Finds, but we haven’t had a Style File!
A great person to start with, I think, is Fashion Icon, Supermodel, and a notorious cell phone chucker…

naomi-sequins

….Naomi Campbell.
Yeah, she’s got an attitude, but homegirl is consistently fierce, fierce, fierce! So fierce, in fact, that we’ll forgive her foibles.
Let’s look at her style:
For Black Tie Gala’s (of which she attends many), Naomi exclusively wears glamorous couture frocks, accented with fur, feathers, and sequins. While she shines on occasion in figure flattering dresses in neutrals…
…and adorns herself in eye catching silver gowns…
…her absolute red carpet rule calls for nothing but black…
..black…
…black…
…and more black!
…fashion stylist Edward Enninful did say that ‘Black on Black is always chic,” no?
Naomi takes her love of all black off the red carpet to the front rows of fashion shows….
…wearing dark fur with skinny jeans or a simple top with a full skirt. The dark color even pervades her more casual moments, as she typically sports black jackets, boots, dresses, and sunglasses…
…injecting a white jacket in the mix….
…for good measure.
All black can seem a bit morbid (visions of going to a funeral come to mind), but Naomi manages to make it work by mixing fabrics, textures, proportions, and throwing accents like bright bags and scarves into the mix. Another benefit of all black: as long as the color is rich, it manages to always look expensive and put together. And you can guarantee that if you wanted to wear that one black item several times in a week, absolutely noone would notice!
I’m sure you already have lots of black in your wardrobe, but you can channel Naomi Campbell in these super chic items that’ll help you stand out in a crowd:
Top Row: Citizens of Humanity Shrunken Knit Vest, $106, www.nordstrom.com; K Karl Lagerfeld Anja Top, $78, www.net-a-porter.com; Leather Blazer, $350, www.armaniexchange.com.
Middle Row:Hellz Bellz Siouxie Jean in Black, $140, www.revolveclothing.com.

Bottom Row:Sequin Mini Skirt, $50, www.bananarepublic.com; Metallic Empire Bubble Dress, $60, www.bebe.com; Tracy High Waist Skirt, $129, CoutureCandy
You’ll be catwalk ready!

Real Talk: How to Fix Frayed Jeans

Hey!
So one of my friends recently suggested a inject a bit more of my “real life” into the blog. If you were here in the beginning, you might remember that all I did back then was take you shopping with me!

claire-shops

Well, I recently had a situation to which, I think, a lot of you curvy girls can relate: My absolute favorite pair of Seven Jeans (purchased at Saks for $187) had sprouted two gaping frays at the thighs, similar to this:
…it was tragic! No other jeans fit me like my Sevens, and I didn’t really feel like shelling out another $200 for a new, potentially inferior pair!
Granted, I probably shouldn’t have been teaching my little sister a dance to Flo Rida’s “Low” in my jeans, but I still felt that they had a bit of life left in them.
I asked my mom, who is an expert seamstress and dressmaker (and who has worked the stuff out of hems, buttons, and the like), and she delivered a sad verdict, “They can’t be fixed, throw them away!”
Not to be deterred, I went to my local dry cleaner…
…to see if there was any hope.
They looked at the damage, and unfazed, said it could be done in a week for $15.
I returned later to pick them up, and Voila…
…I couldn’t believe it! Minus a slightly lighter color, there was little sign of the prior fray. My friend and I were flabbergasted. I looked and saw they placed a very serious looking patch inside…
Long story short, my jeans were (almost) as good as new!
So if your favorite pair of jeans has been relegated to the”weekend” pile, or if you’ve lost hope, know that there is a solution:
Just throw in a $15 patch and keep it moving!
Hope that helped someone out there…

Hey!
So sheath dresses have been popping up on many the red carpet lately. The supremely classic silhouette works on any body type (belted versions are better as to create an hourglass shape), and the style is an effortless work piece. Let’s take a look at how a few celebs rocked ’em recently:
Elise Neal looks sultry and chic…

Happy Friday!

So today I took the day off from work to celebrate the eve of a very special occasion…
…My Birthday! Yay!

So I’m going to keep this short so I can go enjoy the unseasonably warm January weather and the beginning of my self-appointed long weeked.

Let’s get to it!
First up, reader Jocelyn wrote in and said, “If you could help me find this dress that Rihanna has on…
… I would be deeply appreciative and re-committed to my New Years resolution of eating well and working out regularly. 🙂
Alright resolutions! You can get Rihanna’s look for little as nothing with this $30 American Apparel Cotton Spandex Double U-Neck Dress…
…get the rest of her look with the following affordable options:

…now the New Years body, that’s up to you!
Next reader Nicholas fell in love with Mary J’s look in her ‘Just Fine’ video.
She says, “Any idea where I can get this dress or a replica???
It looks like Mary is simply wearing a cowl neck dress with the cowl pulled up to make a hood.
Get a Mary Essence with the following replicas:
Left to Right: Ted Baker Cowl Neck Dress, $123, www.asos.com; White + Warren Cowl Neck Dress, $209, www.neimanmarcus.com; Alice Ritter Fatima Dress in Ivory Grey, $255, www.revolveclothing.com.
You’ll be fine!
Reader Naomi loved Alicia Keys’ style in this picture:
She says, “This dress is so cute! Where can I get it?

Well, it looks like Alicia is wearing a banded Herve Leger dress.  While one of Leger’s creations could run you $900, you can get an Alicia Keys like look in this $288 BCBG Tiered Satin Beaded Halter Dress
…from www.macys.com. Not quite as tight, but close enough!
Lastly, reader Vanessa, who was kind enough to send in a picture…
…says, “I will be going to Miami soon and I have been searching for a dress with hidden pockets. I have seen some LaRok styles but none of them have all the qualities I am looking for. PLEASE HELP ME :o)
Hey Vanessa! One of my absolute favorite designers, Diane von Furstenberg, has made of science of placing discreet pockets on pretty feminine dresses (perfect for hot Miami).
Check out a few:
Left to Right: Eyelet Wrap Dress, $163, www.neimanmarcus.com; Ayuka Dress, $241, www.pinkmascara.com; 3/4 Length Dress, $232, www.yoox.com.
Of course one needs deep pockets to afford Diane’s hidden pockets, so I did a search for a few inexpensive options that are equally chic:
Left to Right: Single Dress ‘Francesca’ Dress, $137, www.nordstrom.com; Orion Optic Print Dress, $132.30, www.asos.com; Harkham Looking Glass Dress, $141, www.revolveclothing.com.
That’s does it! There will be more next week….
Off to enjoy my birthday weekend! Hope you enjoy yours as well…
