That all-around style maven extraordinaire B. Smith was the first African-American model to land the cover of Mademoiselle?
The eponymous B. (real name Barbara) evolved from model to multi-hyphenate style mogul with her uber-successful line of restaurants, home interiors, style manuals, and jewelry.
In addition, Ms. Smith is a spokesperson for several top national brands, and is frequently seen on NBC’s “Today” Show, “Good Morning America,” and “The View,” in addition to her own show, “B. Smith with Style,” which is now broadcast on TV One.
I’ve been to her restaurant here in NY and must say the food is the truth.

That the fabulous and trailblazing Toukie Smith was the first African-American model to have a mannequin designed in her likeness?
Ms. Smith, who appeared in campaigns for Chanel, Versace, and Norma Kamali among others, also graced the pages of Vogue, ELLE, Ebony, and Cosmopolitan, just to name a few. Toukie’s history-making mannequin was crafted in 1978, the same year she won the Bloomingdale’s Model of the Year award.
Fashion Bombshell Dionne was the first to correctly guess that Toukie Smith is the sister of iconic designer Willi Smith, who’s received his own Fashion Bombtribute. Dionne, third from left in the strapless dress, cites Tracy Reese as the black fashionista she receives inspiration from because, “She takes into account the female body when designing and creates something that is not only timeless, but also truly special. To me she is THE quintessential fashion bomb!“ And she’s even wearing a Tracy Reese frock in her pic– loves it!

Very few women can manage to be as poised *and* sizzling hot as Lena Horne was in her day. With a penchant for coyly demure necklines and super-sexy silhouettes, this timeless siren was known as much for her beauty as for her professionalism, class, and talent. While the Brooklyn native certainly made history as the first African-American singer to sign with MGM, it was also her style that made me sit up and take notice.
Ms. Horne stuck with no fuss, streamlined pieces that complimented her oh-so-enviable curves. One thing I love about the days of Old Hollywood is the glamour that permeated just about every aspect of their lives, whether you went out dancing at the Cotton Club or hit up a boxing match. Even if we don’t have her diamond-cutting cheekbones or statuesque figure, we can still strive for some of the poise and grace Lena herself embodied. Borrow a little bit of Lena Horne’s subdued sensuality with dresses that feature daring little necklines and figure skimming silhouettes!
Today the Washington Post confirms that Michelle Obama will appear on Vogue Magazine’sMarch issue. Shot by Anne Leibovitz, the cover is only the second in Vogue’s history featuring a first lady. Editor-At-Large Andre Leon Talley interviewed Michelle for the cover story, and said it was, “one of the best experiences of my life.” Michelle opted for designers like Jason Wu, J.Crew, and Narciso Rodriguez for the shoots, and apparently didn’t need help plucking looks that worked for her. Vogue’s keeping the hotness coming for 2009. Will you pick up this issue?
