The Internet vs. Kanye: Fans, Brands and Stars React to the Controversy

The entire planet has, at the very least, caught whiff of Kanye West’s downwards spiral as tensions arose between the Yeezy CEO and his multiple business deals following a slew of problematic and contentious statements. West’s “White Lives Matter” t-shirt that emerged during Paris Fashion Week was only the tip of the iceberg that led to his self-destructive media parade, expressing what people have described as white supremacist and anti-Semitic claims. It wasn’t long before the music mogul was subsequently dropped by his management, replaced on P. Diddy‘s billionaires club list and ousted from partnerships with Balenciaga and Adidas.

We’ll be the first to admit, this entire debacle and series of outbursts have been hard to watch! Kanye risked it all, and although the majority agreed with Adidas and Balenciaga’s decisions to give him the boot, others thought the brands reacted only as a result of public outrage.

On Twitter, @fliionthewall posted their thoughts saying “This @adidas Yeezy news is so gross. ‘We don’t approve of @kanyewest, but we’ll gladly profit off of him.’ Cut ties or don’t, but this performative conscience is nasty.”

The internet has entered the chat to discuss their shock, disappointment and to put into question the corporate social responsibility of brands and celebrities associated to Ye. Fans were particularly uneasy about Khloe Kardashian wearing a pair of Yeezy 350s the day after Adidas publicly ended their ventures with Yeezy, especially seeing as she was the first KarJenner sister to take a stance in a post to her instagram story that read “I support my Jewish friends and the Jewish people.”

One Twitter user with the handle @CeejayMack_20 wrote “Khloe Kardashian was wearing yeezy’s today. Is she trolling now? #ye #KanyeWest #YEEZYBOOST

During his latest Saturday Night Live monologue, Dave Chapelle spoke on Adidas and joked about the unsettling remarks made by the rapper, opening the topic by saying “I denounce antisemitism in all its forms and I stand with my friends in the Jewish community – and that, Kanye, is how you buy yourself some time.”

Viewers took to Dave’s lighthearted humor surrounding the ever-evolving situation. Instagram user @kingthelady commented “Comedic Genius. He told not one lie in the funniest way.”

Another user, @thebrotherpill, sounded off with “Has anyone heard a SPECIFIC antisemitic statement?? I keep hearing them accuse black men of it but not ONE of them has pointed to the specific antisemitic statement...”

While this may be a polarizing conversation, it’s a necessary one for us as a society to have. Between fan speculations, mixed messaging from celebrities and the pressure for brands to pick a side, one side of the story remained overlooked until recently. Israeli pop star Noa Kirel went certified viral for her MTV European Music Awards outfit: a custom design by Yuvalal Roey with Kanye’s face plastered all over a pair of black leather pants and leather gloves, embellished with gold chains and symbolic charms associated to Jewish heritage.

Photo: IG/Reproduction

Noa explained the inspiration behind the look stating “I had this idea that came to my head: after all the anti-Semitic things that Kanye said about Jewish people — and I’m Jewish — I knew I had to have something that will be powerful on the red carpet […] I really wanted it to be a message and not just a regular outfit. And it takes some nerves, but I think the message was received.”

Spectators were quick to applaud her strong message, but back on Twitter, not all were certain to understand what that exact messaging was. Debating the outfit as a protest to Kanye’s comments, @colorgrlshuffle argued “Was that it? Maybe I’m having an SNL moment because I’m getting the exact opposite message from clothing choice.”

More added to the thread, such as @Brxannamxchelle who tweeted “Well she didn’t accomplish what she set out to lol”

What do you think of Adidas and Balenciaga’s choice to part ways from Kanye West? How do you feel about Khloe’s Yeezy sneakers, Dave Chapelle’s monologue and Noa Kirel’s outfit choice? We want to hear your thoughts!

Top 5 Ways to Style Claw Hair Clips This Winter

You may not have given much thought to how you style your claw hair clips over the years, but with the cooler months approaching, you might want to start thinking about ways to incorporate them into your fall and winter outfits.

With the right tips and tricks, claw hair clips can be worn during any season and even with any outfit. Read on to learn more about how to style claw hair clips this winter.

  1. With a High Ponytail

If you have a high ponytail, your claw clip can either be placed in a low position on the back of your hair or it can be worn in a high position. If you choose the low option, place your claw clip just above where you would usually part your hair.

If you choose the high option, place it at the top of your ponytail, where most women would tie their elastic. This will give you an elegant and polished look. You can easily buy claw clips online from authentic platforms to give yourself a classy look this winter.

  1. With a Messy Bun

This winter, invest in a claw hair clip and use it as a stylish accessory for your messy bun. First, pull your hair up into a ponytail and make sure it’s tight. Next, take the ends of your hair and wrap them around the base of the ponytail.

Then, you will have to secure it with bobby pins. You can also do this on dirty-hair days by pulling your hair into a low bun and securing it with bobby pins.

  1. With Side-Swept Bangs

Claw hair clips can be a great way of keeping your hair out of your face and off your neck. However, they can be tricky to style when it comes to a winter outfit. Luckily, there are some simple ways you can use them this season that will work with any hairstyle or outfit.

First, if you have bangs and want them on the side, clip in one side of your hair so that the other side is free for the claw clip. This style can be worn with winter as well as fall casual work outfits

  1. With Straight Hair

There can be no classy way to flaunt your claw clips than wear them with straight hair. Claw clips are great for pulling back hair, but they can get lost in your straight locks. There are five ways to style them with your straight hair.

You can pull a few pieces of hair back and hold them in place with the claw clip. Use two clips on either side of your head and twist them together at the back of your head. Then wrap a section of hair around the clip and pin it down.

  1. With Curls

There are several ways you can wear claw clips with curls. You can curl your hair with a curling iron, twist it into a loose bun and then secure it with a claw hair clip.

Tuck one side of your hair behind your ear and wrap the other side around the back of your head, securing it in place with a claw clip at the back of your neck.

theMyths About Diamonds – An Expert’s Guide

Is it just us, or are diamonds getting more and more confusing to shop for? Diamonds are the ultimate statement of luxury and we love a great shopping trip for diamond jewelry. But with the avalanche of diamond jewelry shops, the big difference between prices, and the confusing choice of natural versus lab-grown diamonds, do you find yourself in a bit of a pickle looking for the right piece of jewelry?

We’ve gathered the 10 common myths about diamonds and have confirmed their validity from a true diamond expert, Brillianteers.com. These are common questions about diamond jewelry, information that we thought to be true (but are not actually correct), and general misconceptions about diamonds that you need to know about.

Myth: You need to look for FLAWLESS diamonds

The first misconception about diamonds is the fact that most of the internet insists that you look for a FLAWLESS diamond for it to be worth buying. But this is simply not true.

Natural earth-mined diamonds form deep within the earth’s crust and most diamonds have inclusions and imperfections within the stone. The reason why you are encouraged to buy flawless diamonds is that these are relatively rare, and therefore, are sold at very expensive prices. The more money you spend, the better it is for the shop you’re buying from.

The reality is that, unless you can afford to buy flawless diamonds, you shouldn’t have to. There are diamonds that are eye-clean that are more affordable than a diamond that is flawless.

What is an Eye-Clean diamond?

An eye-clean diamond has inclusions that are so small, they are only visible under a microscope and a bright light. Their flaws will be so small that they look flawless to the naked eye. VS2 to VVS1 diamonds are eye-clean. You will not see any inclusions with the naked eye.

Myth: Stay away from Clarity Enhanced Diamonds

Clarity enhanced diamonds are natural diamonds with inclusions that are visible to the naked-eye, and are treated to remove these visible imperfections. The myth around clarity enhanced diamonds is that these are deceitful and should be avoided. The problem with this myth is that it refers to diamonds being sold as “flawless”, but are, in fact, clarity enhanced. This gives jewelers the opportunity to sell cheap diamonds at higher prices.

On the other hand, clarity enhanced diamonds are a great option if you’re looking for an affordable alternative to the regular price of diamonds. The key to finding the right pieces of jewelry that aren’t sold with a deceitful intention is looking for shops that are transparent with their use of clarity enhanced diamonds.

Have a browse at these 1 carat diamond engagement rings. Some are significantly more affordable because of their use of clarity enhanced diamonds. This is a great choice if you’re looking to buy particularly larger diamonds at a lower price.

Myth: Lab-grown diamonds are not real diamonds

This is a big topic amongst the diamond community, and has been ever since scientists discovered how to create diamonds in a laboratory. There’s a big misconception that lab-manufacutred diamonds are not real diamonds. This is simply not true.

Diamonds are prized for the fact that they form for millions of years under the pressure of the earth’s crust. The only way we obtain these natural diamonds is by mining them. But with the high demand for diamonds, scientists wanted to create these in a laboratory setting.

Lab-grown diamonds are created by mimicking the same conditions in which natural diamonds form. They are produced in a controlled process that uses the same materials, conditions and chemical properties that make up naturally forming diamonds in the earth’s crust. This is why it makes it almost impossible to know or see the difference between a natural diamond or a lab-grown diamond.

Because lab-grown diamonds form in the same way natural diamond do, they also have similar inclusions and imperfections and earth-mined diamonds. The biggest difference between the two is that lab-grown diamonds are anywhere between 30% to 70% cheaper than earth-mined diamonds; making them a great affordable alternative to earth-mined diamonds.

The important part: Make sure all your diamonds are ethically sourced!

With diamond jewelry standing as such a big staple in everyone’s every day collection, there’s one important factor you should always consider before shopping. That the diamonds you are purchasing are ethically sourced. Always look for the Kimberly Process Certificate when shopping for diamonds. The Kimberley Process unites administrations, civil societies, and industry in reducing the flow of conflict diamonds in the market. The certificate guarantees that you are purchasing a diamond that is ethically sourced and have not been obtained through unethical processes.

Consider these myths when shopping for your perfect piece of diamond jewelry. Don’t hesitate to ask questions when it comes to your purchase. Learn more about the jewelers you are buying from and don’t shy away from asking for affordable alternatives such as clarity enhanced diamonds and lab-grown diamonds! Diamond jewelry is a forever-investment, and you should be 100% happy with what you purchase!

Top Looks at the 2022 Soul Train Awards: Coco Jones in Annakiki, Ari Lennox in LaQuan Smith, Baby Tate in Roberto Cavalli and more

Last night, Black entertainment’s most talented artists, concessioners, and industry leaders gathered to recognize the best in R&B and hip-hop. The Soul Train Awards is the biggest event in the two genres and features powerhouse performances, moving tributes, and appearances. Nights like this usually start with a star-studded red carpet where attendees show off their exquisite looks. This year, stars from the beloved Coco Jones to highly memed Queen Naija, took to the red carpet with dynamic style. Below are some of the most highlighted looks of the night.

Coco Jones in Annakiki

Coco Jones swept the red carpet in an ultra fitted mermaid skirt and a keyhole strapless crop top. The opera gloves certainly bring the elegance of the look together but we’re wondering if a sheer glove might have been a better move? Regardless, Coco looks great from her radiant red lip to the bubble hem on her skirt.

Ari Lennox in LaQuan Smith

Ari’s put her best leg forward in this champagne LaQuan Smith set. We’re loving this color on her and find the metal and acrylic accessory mixing dynamic and fresh.

Lucky Daye

Lucky Daye’s monochromatic sparkle look lit up the red carpet, and our Instagram feeds. It was a look that grabbed attention and, coincidentally, perfectly timed with the upcoming holidays.

Baby Tate in Roberto Cavalli

Photo: Getty Images

It was a night of refinement for Baby Tate. The part-time cozy girl spent the ceremony in a gorgeously draped black silk gown. It was giving elegance and romance.

Tank in Rich Fresh

We always appreciate when men step out of their usual black suit boxes and bring a little color to the red carpet. Tank’s colorblocked suit is nearly as handsome as he.

Letoya Luckett in Jovani

Photo: Getty Images

We were green with envy watching Miss Luckett last night. Her emerald Jovani gown was definitely the most fun and sexy of the night.

Queen Naija

Photo: Getty Images

Similar to Kim Kardashian’s Baby2Baby gala look, Queen Naija brought the pretty in pink energy with a gown that has it all: thigh high slit, bust cutout, cold shoulders, and a glove. Talk about bringing the pressure.

Xscape in La Bourjoisie (Kandi), Yousef Al Jasmi, (Tameka), Matopeda (Tiny) and MNM Couture (Latosha)

Perhaps it wasn’t a night of sparkle for all the ladies of Xscape but the Lady of Soul winners looked high glam regardless. While Kandie, Tameka and Tiny served up some modern Dream Girls realness, Latosha looked like moving art in a gown we’ve seen on the red carpet before.

Reginae Carter in Area

Photos: Getty Images

At first glance, Reginae’s amethyst Area moment is a lot to take in. The cropped fur with her gorgeous curled tresses swallow her neck and shoulders, creating a stuffy look, but imagine for a second the flirty youthfulness of the look…sans the coat.

Connie Orlando in Tom Ford

Executives bring the style too. We love the way Connie modernised this silver sequin Tom Ford look by tying the shirt. A little midriff made a huge style impact. Connie sparkled last night both literally and figuratively.

The Biggest Winter Boot Trends of 2022-2023: Uggs, Puffer Boots and Sporty Thigh-Highs

Hate it or love it, the countdown to winter begins now! While boots season starts in autumn, we don’t really get into full gear until those temperatures dwindle down to necessitate the multiple layers, wrap around scarves and, ultimately, some well insulated footwear to brave the cold winds or battle the snow. Part of nailing your winter wardrobe is making sure your shoe game is up-to-date in order to instantly upgrade the rest of your attire. Take it from us, you can’t go wrong with any of these shoe trends:

New Age Uggs

The Ugg boot has been making a slow but steady comeback in recent fall and winter seasons! This is thanks to a number of new Ugg models and colorways over the past year or so, ranging from sandals to slides, slippers and various boots. Out of the cool new designs is the Drizlita boot, a clear boot that resembles the shape of the original Ugg and pairs perfectly with the brand’s range of colorful socks. The Drizlita is priced at $110 while the socks go for $40 each.

Over-the-Knee Boots, but Make It Sporty

Over-the-knee boots are still in this year! To bring your look up to speed with the latest trends, we suggest getting creative in how you style your thigh-highs and doing so with a little twist such as a bold color, a patterned style or giving it an activewear edge à la Balenciaga! The brand’s wildly popular knife boot has been subject to a makeover in the last Balenciaga x Adidas collaboration which debuted a three-stripe version of the heel worth $2,550.

Puffer Boots

Puffer everything is in style at the moment, including puffy boots! While there are many iterations of the puffer boot exist out there, such as the Moon Boot that everyone loved last winter, Ugg has now come out with the Classic Maxi Ultra Tall Boot that can be zipped to suit your fashion needs of the day. For $320, this all in one shoe will convert to either below the knee, mid calf, ankle or clog style.

We All Grieve Differently, Right? Discussing Yung Miami’s Post Funeral ‘Fit Pics

Grief is a complicated emotion, and rarely does it travel alone. It often pulls up to the party with sadness or anger, confusion, and anxiety. Sometimes all of the above at once. It cannot be explained simply by even the top psychologists or viewed plainly in black and white.

Yet with all the density of the emotion, grief is versatile. It’s an emotional chameleon that manifests itself in a multitude of ways. We all receive and operate through grief differently, and perhaps that’s why Yung Miami chose to show off her funeral ‘fit for the Gram.

Photo: JT (left) and Yung Miami (right), Takeoff’s funeral service at the State Farm Arena

On November 11th, family, friends and fans gathered to honor Takeoff. The former Migos member lost his life in Houston at the beginning of this month. The memorial was held at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena where Takeoff’s celebrity friends and industry peers said their goodbyes. Drake gave a moving eulogy and Justin Bieber performed an acoustic rendition of his song Ghost.

In usual funeral fashion, guests arrived respectfully dressed in their black best (see more at TheStateofFashion.bulletin.com). Yet it can’t go forgotten that this is a celebrity funeral. The dark sunglasses that covered swollen eyes ranged from Balenciaga to Versace, and the Van Cleef jewelry was on sight. Though, when it’s a funeral, not a fashion show, serving a look is typically towards the bottom of your list of concerns, or at the very least, it should be.

After the funeral, Yung Miami posted fly ‘fit pics on Instagram. A normal practice amongst A-listers and influencers, except this OOTD seemed a little OOT (out of touch).

Clad in a leather look —featuring a bold shoulder overcoat, mini dress, Balenciaga BB boots, and a satin quilted bag— Yung Miami posed for the Gram in the exact look she wore to Takeoff’s funeral. Captioned with a lyric from Glorilla and Cardi B’s hit Tomorrow 2, the post sees Miami serving on the streets in a handful of runway-ready poses.

Though the lyric “everyday the sun won’t shine but that’s why I love tomorrow” insinuates brighter days following Takeoff’s passing, it could also read as simply captioning a photo with a current song or showing love to her fellow femcees. The comments further this idea with frequent flame emoji responses and the countless statements speaking to the look itself. Not typically the feedback one would receive on what they wore as a dearly departed. Miami also made sure to tag her stylist, hairstylist, and makeup artist in the photo, a common move when posting a ‘fit pic.

In addition to Miami, Keyshia Ka’oir also dropped a funeral ‘fit pic to IG. Though she ends her carousel with photos of the deceased alongside his obituary, she did follow up with a separate post that is all about the look.

Without confirmation from Miami or Ka’oir, we can’t say these women aren’t acting out of anguish. Grief is a many-faced beast, and with both women part of an image-leading industry, it’s possible showing out on Instagram is also how they show sadness. There’s also the argument of how close all parties were. If neither Ka’oir nor Miami were in Takeoffs immediate circle, perhaps they don’t see anything wrong with their posts as they did pay their respects.

It’s also possible they have fallen victim to their celebrity and let their love for the lights blind them from their better judgment. An event as high-profile as a funeral for one of the most dynamic rappers of the early 2010s will likely draw media attention. With Takeoff’s death as highly publicized as it is, coupled with the location of the service (an arena), it was unlikely we the people wouldn’t see the look.

This begs a few questions: Was this necessary? Who was this for?, and is nothing sacred anymore? While I understand ‘fit pics are a part of the celebrity/influencer job, the already narrowing line of ‘what’s for the TL’ vs, ‘what’s for RL’ grows even thinner when days of mourning aren’t spared from social media moments.

As the desire to be seen on social media grows, we’re bound to witness even more moments that make us question what isn’t for the Gram anymore. Though when it comes to funeral-related posts, well, we all grieve differently, right?
