Real Style : Chatelet Les Halles

Hey Guys!

So it’s official. Chatelet les Halles is the place in Paris to find urban street style. Because the area is peppered with shops, restaurants, and museums, of course it attracts tons of fabulous people during the weekend. It also doesn’t hurt that Chatelet is by a huge train hub, bringing in people from the typically uber diverse suburbs smack to the city center!

I was shopping in the Marais today and decided to try out my new Iphone’s Map App to meet a few friends at Grands Boulevards. My journey took me through Chatelet, and I happened upon this nice young fella:

He was super excited to be snapped by an “American” fashion blog!

I liked his perfectly coordinated outfit, and appreciated how he matched his turquoise hat and purple down jacket to his purple and turquoise shoes. He’s also working a few trends hot in the streets here Paris…the BAPE Baby Milo tees are on fire, and guys are still loving the readers and neck scarves. Oh, and note, both guys and girls are totally cool wearing white pants post Labor Day.

What do you think of his look?

To get to Chatelet, take the RER A, B, D or Metro lines 1, 4, 7, and 11.

The New York Times Catches on to the Impact of Fashion Bloggers

Bryan-Boy-Editors-Front-Row

Fashion-Bloggers
Blogger-Tavi-of-Style-Rooki

In this week’s Sunday Style section, New York Times writer Eric Wilson writes about the seemingly sudden rise of a handful of fashion bloggers, namely Bryan of the funny blog Bryan Boy, Tommy Ton of the dope photo blog Jak and Jil, and Tavi, a 13-year-old wunderkind of the blog Style Rookie (if you haven’t checked these out, get to clicking!). He says, “Fashion bloggers have ascended from the nosebleed seats to the front row with such alacrity that a long-held social code among editors, one that prizes position and experience above outward displays of ambition or enjoyment, has practically been obliterated.” The article goes on to interview everyone from prominent publicists to established editors–and it seems everyone has an opinion.

Notoriously tough publicist Kelly Cutrone says, “There has been a complete change this year. Do I think, as a publicist, that I now have to have my eye on some kid who’s writing a blog in Oklahoma as much as I do on an editor from Vogue? Absolutely. Because once they write something on the Internet, it’s never coming down. And it’s the first thing a designer is going to see.” Meanwhile the editors at longstanding magazines are none too happy, with Anne Slowey of Elle dismissing young Tavi as being a ‘bit gimmicky’. Let the claws come out!

Bloggers have even felt the heat, with Tommy Ton of Jak and Jil relaying his discomfort via Twitter back in September while attending fashion shows. He said, “So I’m sitting front row at Dolce and I’m sitting next to Hamish Bowles and one seat away from Anna Wintour…I’m kind of getting some funny looks as to why I’m here. It’s very surreal.” Earlier at another show, he says, “I thought I was sitting next to Mario Testino but when he saw that he was seated next to a blogger, he got up and left 🙁” Ouch.

Jak and Jil Paris Fashion Week the Fashion Bomb Spring 2010

Whatever lukewarm welcomes they may receive, hats off to Bryan Boy, Tommy Ton, Tavi, et al for all they’ve accomplished and for trailblazing for other Fashion Bloggers patiently waiting in the wings! With publications like Elle and Vogue laying off rather than nurturing new talent, young people need an outlet to flex their fashionable skills. In Bryan and Tavi’s case, the audience doesn’t care about their years of experience, but rather their sheer enthusiasm for fashion and how they use what they see on the runway to inform their personal styles. I definitely see them as inspirations and proof that with enough hard work anything is possible.

Undercover Fly Guy of 2009: Drake

Drake-Men-Fashion-Style

With all the buzz and hoopla this year around Kanye’s outbursts and Tiger Woods’ “transgressions,” did we even take the time to look at one of the best up and coming rap artists in the game?  Aside from his number 1 singles, who would’ve thought Drake would have a closet worth envying?

Drake 1

Gone are the days of gangsta rap with matching attire, i.e. baggy jeans and oversized hoodies. Drake likes to keep things casual with patterned shirts and understated, yet dope footwear.

A prepster at heart, Drake loves his cardigans and pullovers. The Comme des Garcons sweater adds some unexpected flair to his ‘fit.

He also likes to keep things simple with both leather and denim jackets and manages to make a pair of khakis look comfortable with a pair of Air Yeezy’s.

When the occasion calls for it he cleans up nicely usually keeping it classic when it comes to suits with shades of black and gray.  But unlike a lot of people, he manages to not look pretentious and forced into a suit.  Effortlessly fly is the name of his game.

What do you guys think of this year’s undercover fly guy?

Hot! or Hmm… : Mary J. Blige at Best Buy

Mary-J-Blige-Best-Buy-New-Y

Mary J. Blige came out last night to promote her newest album, “Stronger With Each Tear,” at Best Buy in NYC. To combat against the winter snow, she pulled on a pair of black Ugg boots with black contrast leggings, a slick black turtleneck, and a shimmer scarf. Dark sunglasses and a cute haircut added a dash of edge to her simple look.
Though we declared Ugg’s over in February, Mary seems to make the notoriously comfy boots look Hot!

But what do you think?
Are they hot! Or do they make you go hmm….?
