Fashion Discussion: Do You Support Black Designers?

laquan smith black designer tyra banks

When’s the last time you purchased a dress by Tracy Reese? Or ordered an item from LaQuan Smith?
Do You Support Black Designers?

I only ask this question because yesterday, when I posted an article about June Ambrose’s 2nd sunglass collection with Selima Optique, quite a few comments were a bit disparaging. ANON00 wrote, “$250 to $350. They’re cute but her demographic does not fit what she’s trying to do. she’s more QVC, her shades should be $90 to $160 IMO. This reminds me of when she tried to sell those turbans for over $100.” Another Anonymous commenter added, “No thanks…the Versace shades I bought from Macy’s were only $190…”

Interesting that most of us wouldn’t hesitate to buy a pair of $200 Versace frames, but when the tag reads June Ambrose, we suddenly feel the goods need to be offered at a bargain price.

Of course we’re all adults: buy what you like! But if we wish to see a change in this industry from a diversity standpoint–with more models and people of color in general– shouldn’t we show support with our wallets?

Tsholo from Botswana had so much fun twirling in our most recent How Do You Wear It? feature, she decided to send in a few more picture to illustrate her personal style:

She types, “I am a creative and fashion forward 26 year old Fashion artist from Africa, Botswana.”

” Growing up, when words failed me I spoke fluent volumes through my clothes.”

” The sciences of appearances- outward appearances to inner well-being have always been my personal legend.”

” Through this medium of communication, I developed a keen interest in how easily society can be influenced over a substantial period.”

” The way in which an ensemble of words or a single item of clothing can instantaneously persuade the masses never fails to intrigue me.”

” For this reason I fell in love with fashion and culture…”

“… the fashion creative arts and its industry as a whole.”

” Hence I’d like any fashion opportunity or fashion feature in your esteemed magazine/site. My blog: http://thekhoifro.wordpress.com/ :)”

Great looks! Beautiful words with gorgeous garments to match. I love that last jumpsuit…and just about everything else. Bombshell!!

Hey Bombshells!
Yesterday, I was asked to speak on a panel about diversity in the media, sponsored by New York Urban League of Young Professionals (NYULYP). For the occasion, I went opted for a Suno Embroidered Cotton Dress:

It was a bit of a statement piece, so I kept everything else simple, accessorizing with my go to Suede Creme Jimmy Choo pumps.

A touch of Cyber Lipstick by Mac, and I was ready to go.

If you like, get my look here:

*I didn’t take…any pictures from the event, though I did grab a couple snaps for Instagram:

The discussion centered on how we can ameliorate the images of people of color in the media (and combat the negative stereotypes perpetuated by reality TV shows, for example).

My answer: create your own content! And if you don’t like what you see on TV, speak out about it. Networks will respond to pressure from viewers.

Hey!
So as you undoubtedly saw on Instagram, we kicked off a new Fashion Bomb TV feature this weekend called Cocktails with Claire: Closet Confessions. The idea is to profile and uncover the style of a fly fashionista by sitting in their closet over cocktails, and talking about clothes!

Today we have a 2nd time Bombshell! Check out Alissa from Brooklyn, New York:

The blogger for StylishCurves.com writes, “When it comes to my personal style its always hard for me to describe.”

” I like to say sleek and chic but I’ve also been told its conservative.”

” As a plus size woman I like to wear things that compliment my shape. I wear a lot of bright colors and prints in body skimming silhouettes to embrace my body as well as to make my looks more interesting.”

“By day I work in Corporate America so I also like my looks to be professional yet youthful.”

” I’ve always tried to maintain a look that is polished and put together.”

” On the weekends, I love to wear easy printed dresses. I’m probably more of a dress girl than anything.”

As a plus size woman I think people try to pigeon hole us into wearing things that covers up or hides our bodies. I do believe in wearing flattering pieces for your body but I also believe in breaking the age old fashion rules and wearing what you like, just find a balance that is fitting and true to who you are.”

“I am all about being body positive which is why I talk about it so much on my blog www.Stylishcurves.com which helps plus women of all sizes and shapes find the latest trends and designers in their size. You can follow me on instagram @stylishcurves and on Facebook.”

You’ve transformed quite a bit since your first submission. I like the evolution!
