Fashion Bomb Exclusive: Talking Hair with Shelby Swain, Creator of Zendaya’s Oscars Faux Locs Look

With all the hubbub surrounding Zendaya Coleman’s Oscars Faux Locs (and the comments surrounding them), I figured I’d hit up Shelby Swain, the creator of Zendaya’s Academy Awards hairstyle, to talk about the whole process!

The LA native said, “Zendaya just wanted to do something different, something new, and something kind of daring. We came up with doing the faux locs. I think it came out perfect.”

The process, which took 7 hours, required meticulous attention to detail. Swain asserts, “It’s kind of like getting braids. It can take from 4-14 hours, and the hairstyle lasts from 6-8 weeks.” The protective style is a great way to someone to try out a new look, or give locs a go before fully committing.

Regarding Giuliana’s comment, Swain offers, “Some people just don’t understand. Not everybody is going to get her look. Some people are gonna love it and some people are not gonna love it.” She continues, “I knew there’d be critics. The look is not for everybody…for right now. [Zendaya] did it right now, but it may take a while for people to fully understand it and accept it for what it is.”

Swain offers, “Her faux locs were a statement of beauty. The term bohemian chic, I didn’t get that. Bohemian chic is something you kinda throw together, it’s unconventional and relaxed. I didn’t get that whatsoever. Her look was well put together. It was a classic and a deeply rooted look.” Agreed!

At any rate, if you’re interested in trying the look for yourself, contact Shelby at shelbeniece@yahoo.com and be sure to follow her on Instagram @Shelbeniece.

Claire’s Life: The Blonds Fall 2015 Fashion Show in Haute Hippie and Casadei Silver Blade Pumps

Happy Last Day of Fashion Week!
Though the New York festivities officially end today, my day ended yesterday with the Blonds Fall 2015 show at Milk Studios.

To celebrate the final jour, I slipped on a feather and sequin hemmed maxi dress from Haute Hippie and my old faithful white fur coat.

I picked up on the gray tones with silver Casadei heels (first pair of Casadei’s–they’re actually pretty comfy), hoops, and a silver cuff.

The show was fabulous! The stage ready, light catching onesies and bodysuits were all paired with furs or matching jackets, and scandalously chic Christian Louboutin shoes.

Claire’s Life: The Marshalls and TJ Maxx Fashion Week Challenge

Hey Bombshells!
So before Fashion Week began, I was given a challenge to go to my local TJ Maxx or Marshalls store, and put together 3 different Fashion Week looks for $500.
4 claire sulmers tj maxx post 9 fashion week fall 2015
The idea was to find one item that could be remixed into 3 looks with the addition of TJ Maxx items or accessories. With the challenge in mind, I made a beeline to the TJ Maxx in Union Square and began perusing their Runway department.

I found lots of great designer items at low prices, but was ultimately drawn to this $17 fluffy white skirt, and decided to use it as my foundational piece.

Working with neutrals is always a great way to go, as they mix and match effortlessly!

After perusing accessories (sunglasses and belts can kick a look up a notch)…

I started to compile clothing items that would go well with the fluffy skirt.

I decided to stick to a neutral palette in general; solid colored items can come off the most sophisticated, especially when shopping for a bargain!

Are you ready to see the result of my TJ Maxx/Marshalls Fashion Week challenge?
On the first day of wearing the skirt, I paired it with a creamy sweater from TJ Maxx, a fur coat, and Gianvito Rossi heels. I used a chain link belt from Marshalls as a necklace (I made that accessory do double duty!).

For my second time wearing the skirt, I paired it with an olive green blouse, and a blazer, both from TJ Maxx.

A metallic pump and a furry coat always seem to bring a look together.

Gotta admit, my last look was not my favorite, but I tried to make it werk, pairing a printed cape I found at TJ Maxx with the fluffy skirt, and my thigh high boots.

The grays were a bit off, but if you blink, it could work! LOL.

At any rate, there you have it!
With the exception of the outerwear and shoes, all the outfits were from TJ Maxx and Marshalls, and I scored them all for $500. Not bad, huh?
So did I pass the challenge? And which TJ Maxx/Marshalls outfit was your fave?
