In today’s feature, we’re highlighting the stylistic musings of the lovely Freda Payne. Now, I have an entire list of Vintage Visions I (eventually) hope to spotlight but this iconic fashionista stole my heart when I ran across one of her candids via Pinterest.
Freda Charcilia Payne was born on September 19, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. As a youngster, the songstress grew up listening to a multitude of artists including Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald; however- it was in 1963 when she began her own musical journey. She later moved to New York City where she collaborated with some of soul’s biggest names before releasing her own album in 1964 entitled ‘After The Lights Go Down And So Much More!!!’. In 1970, the singer released her hit single “Band of Gold” and its success was unparalleled. The song was written by Motown producers Holland-Dozier-Holland and sold over a million copies! Throughout the rest of her dynamic career Payne performed on Broadway, released countless albums and even hosted her own talk show.
Freda Payne’s style is nothing short of diverse. As I further researched her accomplishments, her ever-changing style was also magnified. I mean, she could rock a pair of crochet shorts and then turn around and don a vintage, silk gown! But, the factor that manages to hold each and every look together is her indisputable confidence. Her go-to pieces included fur stoles, jumpsuits and even sky-high platforms.
Want to know more about Freda Payne? Well, check out more of her amazing story here and here. She’s such a beauty!
**BONUS: Catch Freda Payne performing her hit single “Band of Gold” on Soul Train in the video below!**
In the meantime, I’m open to suggestions for future Vintage Visions. C’mon, let me know who you’d like to see featured! I’ll be looking out.
Amal Clooney is quite the fashionista, no?
She grabbed dinner at the Electric Room in Nottinghill with designer Stella McCartney, in a $2,280 lace jumpsuit of McCartney’s design.
Nude pumps, tassel earrings, and a yellow clutch were here accessories for the outing.
Amal certainly has the height and frame for this piece, but the accessories don’t do it justice. A simple black sandal (like the Nudist) and a coordinating clutch would’ve looked more refined, no?
At any rate, if you can splurge, get her jumpsuit at MyTheresa.com.
Karrueche Tran Instagrammed her #ootd for last night’s Hennessy x Rap Up event, and flashed her legs in a $199 Just Enaj Olive Evening Gown:
The saucy pieces features a low back, and a high slit with a wrap front that adjusts to fit on the waist line.
The dress is made long so that it can be tailored to fit. Karrueche must not have had time to get to a tailor…but aside from that, she looks great!
Purchase at JustEnaj.com.
Hot! or Hmm…?
Being a face of a high fashion brand like Dior isn’t enough for Rihanna–she wants to also be a designer. Â Reports are surfacing that in addition to her recently launched temporary tattoos, the singer is set to drop an accessories collection. Â Apparently Rih Rih filed an application for a new brand called $CHOOL KIlls searching for rights to work under the category of leather and other clothing products. Â Sources have confessed that she will be dropping a line of totes and purses first and then going into full-fledged apparel later. Will you be buying? (Grazia)
Speaking of full, Fill Figured Fashion Week is going on this week with about 2,000 women expected to attend. The event will host 25 brands and 12 independent designers. Fruit of the Loom is the main sponsor of the events. (Fortune)
Lest you forget, Kendall Jenner is not just a model for Estee Lauder–she’s also a collaborator. Â As such, the social media star has just released a new shade of red lipstick that the brand characterizes as “part poppy, part orange crush, all matte, all Kendall.” If you need that in your life, pony up $30 for your limited-edition bottle of Restless.
Mass retailer Zara is being accused of racial profiling and discrimination in a new report from The Center for Popular Democracy. Â Apparently employees use the term “special order” to indicate to other employees that someone might be stealing and this term was disproportionately used towards black customers. Zara refutes these claims. (Racked)
In the wake of widespread calls for the state of South Carolina to remove the Confederate flag from the State Grounds, a few major retailers like eBay, Sears and Wal-Mart are banning the sale of Confederate flag merchandise. eBay says that “This decision is consistent with our long-standing policy that prohibits items that promote or glorify hatred, violence and racial intolerance.” (CNN)
Nothing screams summer quite like a gorgeous wide brimmed fedora! Patricia Field has several options in store, but I have an affinity for her $24 Paper Braid Option:
The wide brimmed option would be the perfect accent for a beachy excursion.
Take inspiration from Lupita Nyong’o, who wore a similar hat with a white bikini for a day in the sun and sand.
Thankfully Patricia Field’s option is more on the affordable side!
Get yours + peruse other hat options at PatriciaField.com.
Would you rock it?
Her jumpsuit has a relaxed fit, a drawstring waist, a button front, and multiple pockets for a practical touch.
Her silver tone leather double strap mules from Giuseppe Zanotti Design feature an open toe, a metallic sheen, a snakeskin effect, a brand embossed insole, and a high stiletto heel.
Cute! I actually had my eye on the jumpsuit, but jumped on Ciara’s dress instead…!
At any rate, if this is up your alley, get her all in one at Topshop and her shoes at FarFetch.com.
First Lady Michelle Obama and her gorgeous daughters Sasha and Malia boarded a plane at Venice’s Marco Polo airport in printed separates from Donna Karan’s Spring 2015 collection.
Sasha and Malia’s dresses are adorable! Searching for those as I type…
Momma Obama’s pieces were modeled on the runway by Saskia de Brauw and Kendall Jenner.
Her $671 top is sold out, but you can get her skirt on sale for $1,202 at Neiman Marcus.
I love this family!
