From Cornrows to Bantu Knots: Valentino Once Again Appropriates Black Hairstyle for their Pre-Fall 2016 Campaign

Valentino has once again chosen to utilize traditional African hair styles without incorporating a majority of models of color. This time the brand has chosen to appropriate Bantu Knots, a traditionally African hairstyle, on the models in their Pre-Fall 2016 campaign.

Valentino Once Again Appropriates Black Hairstyle for White Models

It almost seems like the brand is immune to the criticism as this comes right on the heels of public backlash regarding the use of ethnic-inspired clothing and hair styles on white models in their Spring 2016 campaign. Valentino has also been repeatedly criticized in the past for their prolific use of excess baby hairs and cornrows on runway after runway. And yet, the brand has yet to feature a significant amount models of color in any of their runways or campaigns.

African culture has become such a strong influence in the fashion industry without crediting the people and history that accompany it.  Bantu Knots have a rich history and cultural significance for African Americans, but last week Vogue displayed their ignorance by crediting their inspiration to 90s era Icelandic singer, Björk.

Valentino may be one of the most obvious perpetrators, but many major brands and publications continue to display this insensitivity towards African culture. These brands need to listen to the voices calling for change or at the very least acknowledge that these aren’t simply hairstyles, they are cultural phenomena.

What do you think? Will you continue to support Valentino or abandon them in hopes they will finally change their ways?

Fashion News: Grace Coddington Steps Down as Creative Director of American Vogue

0 Neneh Cherry, Grace Coddington, Lena Dunham, and more by Mark Lebon for i-D no. 322

It seems, yet again, that the fashion industry is going through some drastic changes. This morning, news broke that Grace Coddington, the woman whose held the title of Creative Director of American Vogue for nearly 30 years, is stepping down from the role effective immediately.

“After more than 25 years at American Vogue, Grace Coddington will assume the role of creative director at large and take on additional projects outside the magazine,” a spokesperson for American Vogue confirmed to a media outlet. “She will work on several Vogue fashion shoots throughout the year.”China+Through+Looking+Glass+Costume+Institute-grace-coddington

Unlike many rumors circulating for Dior or Alexander McQueen, there are no tentative plans to fill the role of creative director at this moment.

Under the management of a new agency, Coddington will be permitted to work on external projects outside of just the magazine.

“I’m not running away from Vogue, because it has opened so many doors. But it will be nice to collaborate [with other brands] and nice to go out [and] give talks to people. It’s just another approach. I’m certainly not going into retirement. I don’t want to sit around.” Coddington told reporters at Business of Fashion.

While Coddington won many of our hearts initially in the 2009 documentary The September Issue, we can not wait to see what new projects she will take on and to see more sides to her artistic ability.

This fall, Phaidon will release a follow up to her memoir in 2002’s Grace: Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue, which will document Coddington’s work from the past 15 years.

Beauty News: Sephora Is Helping Out Female-Led Beauty Start-Up Companies

Beauty-News-Sephora-Is-Helping-Out-Female-Led-Beauty-Start-Up-CompaniesAlthough we never need another reason to love Sephora, here’s one more that may make your heart happy.

This year, the beauty retailer is heading up a new program entitled Sephora Accelerate, which will provide a bootcamp like experience to 10 early-stage start-ups at its San Francisco headquarters. The bootcamp aims to provide mentorship and provide a platform for them to display their hard work in August. With applications accepted until Dec.31st, the class of participants will be chosen sometime around March.

“SEPHORA is uniquely positioned to support and inspire women as they achieve their goals, and from the beginning, it’s been among the top requests from both our clients and our employees,” said Calvin McDonald, President and CEO of SEPHORA AMERICAS.

Beauty-News-Sephora-Is-Helping-Out-Female-Led-Beauty-Start-Up-Companies-2Those chosen to be part of Sephora Accelerate must also include an element in their company that will help their community as well as have a female founder. So pretty much, Sephora is holding everyone responsible to extending the same love to others that they’re giving to them. Amazing!

On top of building relationships with industry experts, partnering and fostering mentorships with leading figures in their respective field and having all-expenses paid trips to the program’s events, the 10 chosen will receive a sum of $2,500 to help them continue their goals and initiatives.

Beauty-News-Sephora-Is-Helping-Out-Female-Led-Beauty-Start-Up-Companies-3This isn’t the first time Sephora’s given back to the community; in fact, Sephora actually has an extensive social impact agenda which includes things such as beauty classes for women reentering the workforce or living in transitional housing (they’ll also be helping those living in shelters come April), and employee support for those affected by natural disasters or major life events.

We love when huge powerhouses like Sephora use beauty for a social cause! What do you guys think of Sephora’s new initiative?

Jada Pinkett Smith Urges Black Actors to Boycott the Oscars; Should We Show Similar Solidarity in Fashion?

Yesterday, to commemorate Martin Luther King Day, Jada Pinkett Smith took to Facebook to urge black actors to boycott the Oscars. Her reason? According to her, the annual awards ceremony rarely recognizes black actors for their achievements. She wrote, “At the Oscars…people of color are always welcomed to give out awards…even entertain, but we are rarely recognized for our artistic accomplishments. Should people of color refrain from participating all together? People can only treat us in the way in which we allow. With much respect in the midst of deep disappointment, Jada.”

While some have chalked up Jada’s declaration to sour grapes (Fresh Prince of Bel Air’s former Aunt Viv, Janet Huber, went on a tirade against the actress), Jada’s words undoubtedly resonates across several artistic industries. Every award show has been lambasted for lack of diversity or acknowledgement of the contributions of people of color. In Fashion, it’s become commonplace for people of African descent to be excluded, not on the list, kept out, and overlooked.

Jada’s video simply urges black people to recognize our power and influence over popular culture, and harness it to make a statement. Dr. King did so with the struggle for Civil Rights. Where is our solidarity today?

While I don’t plan to boycott Fashion Week, I have indeed taken a lot of my focus away from it. While I used to yearn to get that mark of acceptance from certain PR firms to go to the hottest shows, I stopped asking after awhile, and now only go to shows where they value my contributions. This season, instead of breaking my neck to go to Milan, I’m going to Essence Women in Hollywood as a Colgate Optic White Ambassador #ow. I’ve realized that it’s more important for me to go where I’m celebrated, not just tolerated.

At any rate, what do you think of Jada’s video? And how can we effect change in our industry?

Fashion News: Beyonce Causes Chaos on USC Campus Practicing for the Superbowl

beyonce causes chaos at usc

If there’s one thing you may not personally want, it’s Beyonce showing up to your campus unannounced.

Take this from someone who suffered the Drake-pocalypse back at Howard University in 2012; chaos happened and innocent bystanders ran for their lives (myself included).

8 Nicki Minaj and Beyonce's Tidal X 1020 Amplified Concert Prada Chunky Black Boots 9Something similar happened yesterday when Queen Bey herself was spied on the campus of USC, apparently practicing for her upcoming Super Bowl Halftime performance set to happen in just a few weeks. So when the students learned that Beyonce was, in fact, on campus…well, I’m sure you can fill in the blanks of what happened.

Let us all take note that when the Queen is in the building, the Bey-hive will turn up.

“Her dancers were dancing and rehearsing,” a source told E! News. “They blocked everything down and the windows so nobody could see.” An estimated 300+ people waited outside, hoping to see Bey, who humbly and quickly snuck out the backdoor entrance.
