Zac Posen Casts Majority Black Models in His Fall 2016 Show

Though New York Fashion Week has been slightly overlooked due to Grammy’s activity (Kendrick Lamar, anyone?) and All Star Weekend festivities, Zac Posen returned #NYFW to relevance with a Fall 2016 show cast with a majority of black models.

The designer, whose line is part owned by Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs, intimated that he was down for the cause when he Instagrammed a picture of him rocking a Black Models Matter tote by Ashley Chew.

He showed and proved on Monday with a Fall 2016 collection featuring gorgeous brown faces, including Grace Bol, Cindy Bruna, Riley Montana, Aya Jones, and Aamito Lagum.

Muslim Designer Hana Tajima’s Modest Collaboration with Uniqlo Will be Sold in the US

Last year,  UK-based Muslim designer Hana Tajima partnered with Uniqlo to create a line of modest clothing which was sold exclusively in Southeast Asia. Following the popularity of the clothing, Uniqlo and Tajima will release a new spring collection which will be sold in the US starting on February 26th. The collection will be available online and in the retailer’s flagship store in Manhattan.

The new collection includes traditional clothing like hijabs and kebayas, a blouse-dress combination, in addition to Western style clothing like tapered pants, structured outwear, and wide leg jeans.  The clothes come not only come in neutrals like black or being but are also available variety of colors, like the trendy dusky pink and marigold, and prints for spring. The line is also relatively inexpensive with prices ranging from as low as $9.99 to the most expensive being $59.90.

Uniqlo is following in the footsteps of other western retailers, like Dolce & Gabbana, who are expanding their clothing with Muslim consumers in mind as they are a rapidly growing market that is predicted to be worth $484 billion by 2019.

“For Muslim women there was almost a sense of being recognized for the first time,” Tajima told Fashionista. “Then, more generally, to have a different sort of voice, another kind of aesthetic available, was really refreshing.”

Despite the modest design of the clothing, they are still very fashion forward.

Fashion News: Rihanna to Release FENTY X Puma Trainer

After a pretty stand out showing as a part of New York Fashion week – no, it didn’t make up for dipping out on the Grammy’s – the Barbadian princess  Rihanna has taken to Twitter to debut her latest collaboration with Puma. Having released a creeper that couldn’t be kept in stock, to say that Puma is hoping for big things here, wouldn’t be outside of the realm of probability.
The style looks interesting. There seems to either be mesh or material like the FlyKnit, which has been trending in the industry for about a year. Reports indicate that in addition to the Blackout color way that the island girl posted to her Twitter the style will also be available in Whiteout and Red Alert.

Expect the style to go on sale Friday, February 26.

In her shot for the new kicks, Rih Rih dons a pair of sculpted frames from Alexander McQueen as well as a reflective hooded jacket from her Puma line.

Sadly though, early reaction from fans does not seem to be encouraging. “I dont know how I feel about these,” tweeted Miami style blogger Ria Michelle. The sentiment was repeated by others on our timeline.

Happy Wednesday!
Last night, Fashion Bomb Daily presented its very first Claire Cares and CCW Collective Fashion Presentation for the Jesse Queen Collection.

2016 for Fashion Bomb Daily is all about philanthropy, as we seek to use our platform to give back and empower designers, stylists, makeup artists, photographers, and journalists of color. For our first fashion week presentation, we tapped our community for absolutely everything, from models to makeup artists to hair stylists. Last night, our efforts resulted in a fantastic display for Jesse Queen, a line for tall fashionistas created by Bianca Stewart.

For Fall 2016, Jesse Queen struck a balance between sporty and chic with cardigans furnished with asymmetrical zips, peplumed bomber jackets, floor grazing bell bottoms, form fitting overalls, and tailored suits. Men were given several edgy athleisure looks, including plaid funnel neck coats, varsity jackets, and comfy sweatpants. The offering was forward thinking without the flash, and easy enough to incorporate into anyone’s wardrobe.

Take a look at who blessed the scene:

Designer Bianca Stewart hit the Step and Repeat with Al Reynolds and Melissa Forde.

TLC’s Tai Beauchamp lent her support.

Tyson Beckford embraced the show’s athletic chic penchants.

He grabbed a pic with Bianca and June Ambrose.

DJ Kitty Cash looked lovely in mesh Cushnie et Ochs.

Fashion Bomb World creative at large Kelley Carter posed with Hakim from Red Giant Media Group.

And celebrity stylist Ty Hunter brought Ty Lites for all the models to get their selfie on.

We encountered innumerable obstacles in the pursuit of this presentation, even down to the last minute. My flight landed in New York from LA at the exact time the presentation began, and I had to hustle to the hotel, get makeup done, and get there! Before the day of the event, we gave ourselves a little over two weeks to make it werk–and werk we did!

First up, praises to Bianca, the genius behind Shop Jesse Queen. She’s the definition of a Bombshell because she had a dream and went for it. We are so proud of her!

Thank you to our shoe sponsor Eleanor Anukam, jewelry sponsor Snob Candy Boutique, and show sponsor Ty Lite.

Also a HUGE thank you to Trevor of the Julien Management Group, Corey, creative director Kelley Carter, and Rasheedah Queen. You’re the bomb!

This is just the first of many Claire Cares and CCW Collective Fashion Shows. We’re going to hit it hard in September with an actual runway show featuring an assortment of designers. Stay tuned!
Until then, what do you think?

Show Review: Laquan Smith Fall/Winter 2016

Set against an industrial backdrop at Jack Studios in Manhattan, Laquan Smith’s Fall/Winter 2016 Collection was all about a “hunter glam” aesthetic. The models were dressed in a variety of neutral tones and metallics accented by a rich burgundy which allowed the beauty of the textiles, including embossed silk and velvet neoprene, to shine through.

Despite the subdued color palette, the collection was still sexy and daring thanks to strategic cut outs, sheer materials, and form fitting silhouettes. Suede thigh high boots and neoprene boots also added an element of sex appeal to turtle neck sweater dresses, 2-piece knit sets and satin culottes.

Smith also played with androgyny with a variety of bomber jackets in different lengths, textiles and colors in addition to accessorizing with utilitarian backpacks. However, the most standout accessory were the Dobermans that accompanied each model.

The glam factor was definitely not missing thanks to some evening dresses that wouldn’t look out of place on the red carpet. There were also lux wrap dresses and mini dresses showcased miles of leg. Kim Kardashian is known for being a fan of the brand and it’s easy to envision her wearing his gold, sheer high necked dress with the shimmering material emphasizing her  curves.

Show Review: Prabal Gurung Fall 2016 Ready To Wear

When it comes to Prabal Gurung, many great things can be said.  But assuredly, at the top of everyone’s list is his masterful ability to marry different textiles so seamlessly.   This collection proved no different in showcasing his affinity for furs and leather, but Gurung’s adoration for delicate fabrics like silk and feathers did nothing less than uplift an already luxurious assemblage.

Gurung’s take on outerwear for this collection didn’t seem to deviate from his usual aesthetic of rich textures.  An onslaught of sumptuous coats trimmed with fur were elegantly draped across the shoulders of bare-faced models traipsing down the runway in sandals, ankle booties and thigh-high boots.  Choosing favorites may prove a difficult task for some with offerings like a white toggle coat, a khaki trench with chevron stitching around the edges of its wide lapels, and tons and tons of fur in navies, pastels, and grays.

Gurung’s woman this fall was a little more relaxed, but sensuality wasn’t thrown to the wayside.  Sheer tops dotted with sparkle and feathers offered an air of sophistication and sexiness.  While there were a slew of leather looks – a black deep V neck pencil dress and a spotted tan leather skirt being the standouts – wispy, printed dresses in variegated hems took the spotlight.  Baring shoulders and showing off the right amount of leg offset such a dainty silhouette.  Despite a more unrestrained shape for the season, there were quite a few red carpet, movie premiere and press junket options the likes of Zendaya, Olivia Palermo and Zoe Saldana would love to get their hands on.

All in all, Gurung put forth a collection that was cohesive and looked incredibly comfortable to wear.  But with all the unfastened covered buttons at the hem of his silk trousers and about the shoulders of dresses and the cuffs of sleeves, it does make one wonder.  Is he easing his way into something and is in the process of unfastening himself from something?  Maybe the answer is not as philosophical as the question posed.  But whatever his message, the delivery was beautiful.

What do you think of Prabal Gurung’s latest?
