Gabby also chatted with the cast about curvy style, online shopping, and her collaboration with Swimsuits For All.
On curvy fashions from past to present:
“Really, it was so matronly and for older women. I was a teenager when I started to love fashion and then was so disappointed with the options. So, to see how far we’ve come has been really amazing.”
On online shopping:
“Obviously, it’s still tough—even now for me to go into a mall and find something I love. I do a lot of my shopping online and things are slowly, but surely, getting better.”
On her Swimsuits For All Collaboration:
“It’s been amazing because I really been passionate about it and swimwear options were kind of the last frontier. They were so matronly, a lot of skirted suits and for those of us who are more confident and who do want to show off our bodies, there were so few things out there for us so I’m so honored to have helped to start the movement to see plus size girls in bikinis.”
Maybe it’s because it’s Spring, but the days seem to be moving quickly, no? Nonetheless, today we’ve got a new Bombshell, Valerie from D.C.:
She says, “My style is bold, sleek and chic.”
“I’m very versatile and love to mix it up!”
Check out the other photos she sent:
Cute! You have legs for daaaaaays, Valerie. I’m loving that red leather-looking skirt and that blue cardigan with the white dress. Yum. Hang out with Valerie on IG: @jc_thestylist. So, what do you think of her style?

In a recent sit-down with Vogue, supermodel Naomi Campbell dished out her top 5 beauty hacks! The 45-year old stunner admitted to a few simple routines while completely denying the possibility of any potential (or past) face lifts.
A few weeks ago, the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced that they were making some groundbreaking changes to New York Fashion Week. In addition, we’re all aware of how influential the CFDA is when it comes to helping aspiring fashion talent. So, the organization’s next move should come as no surprise!
With Cadillac serving as a proud partner, the CFDA recently announced their new venture simply known as Retail Lab. Retail Lab is aimed towards granting up-an-coming designers with their own temporary retail stores.
According to Vogue, “the initiative will allow six designers to install a custom retail pop-up shop on the ground floor of Cadillac’s global headquarters in New York City, at 330 Hudson Street, for a three-month period each. In addition to the space, Cadillac will provide a $75,000 grant to each participating designer to cover the costs of displays, marketing, and wholesale buys“.
The CFDA is confident that this type of program will give designers a unique chance to work directly with consumers while diving deep into the world of visual merchandising and interior design. Some of the program’s advisory board includes revered fashion veterans such as Reed Krakoff, Julie Gilhart and Simon Doonan. The inaugural “lab” is set to launch in July with designer Timo Weiland as the lucky first pick.
Cadillac has agreed to a three-year commitment with the CFDA; therefore, opening the door to countless designers to gain experience within running a brick-and-mortar business. Other candidates who are interested in this program can apply for the remaining spots on the CFDA’s website here.
“The CFDA is always looking for meaningful programs that help strengthen the impact of American fashion,” expresses CFDA President Steven Kolb. “Every designer aspires to a freestanding retail experience that allows them to tell their brand story and connect directly with consumers. Cadillac’s commitment to the industry will help the selected designers make this a reality.”
I believe this is a wonderful opportunity! And, a great move for the CFDA.
I love Danai Gurrira for so many reasons, there’s no way I could focus on just one. After being honored at last night’s Black Girls Rock Awards on BET, I decided to delve into her accolades just so you guys can see why she’s our Beauty Crush!
With beautiful, rich chocolate skin and a full embracement of her natural hair, it’s evident how Danai is PHYSICALLY beautiful (I mean, look at her). However, we love to feature people who are also doing things for OTHERS; undeniably, Gurira is changing her environment one narrative and opportunity at a time.
Aside from being a representation of the various tones of melanin that can be portrayed in film and media (she’s known for her character on The Walking Dead and had an action doll made in her honor), Danai has also created active spaces for African-American actresses to thrive by being a playwright that focuses on producing roles for women of color. Her recent project, Eclipse, also features Lupita Nyong’o and tackles the politics and social concepts of norms in the Black and African community. A powerhouse in her own right, Danai Gurira shows young women of all ages to never silence your voice but to explore and present the authentic representation of yourself, your culture and community!
In previous interviews, she’s summed up her mission statement with simply, “I want to see other people fly. Let’s find five amazing actresses and give them an opportunity to do their thing, which unfortunately doesn’t happen very often for women of African descent. A big part of my creative mandate is to create those opportunities.” Beautifully said.
These are but a few reasons why Danai Gurira is our Beauty Crush Wednesday! So tell us, is she yours?
