It’s time for another brand spankin’ new installment of our Look of the Week feature! This go round, we’re highlighting striking ‘fits from a 16-year old fashion-icon-in-the-making, a glowing mommy-to-be and a stunning actress whose new film, Queen of Katwe, is set to hit theaters today!
So, keep reading to find out more about who made the cut!
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama continued to melt our hearts as they made an appearance at the Phoenix Awards Dinner at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on last Saturday. As usual, the inspiring couple looked quite ravishing, but all eyes were on Mrs. Obama. She effortlessly brought us all to our knees as she wore a metallic, hand-painted creation by Naeem Khan. The strapless gown includes gold leaf embellishments, black tulle and a fitted waist. Take notes ladies: this is class personified.
The 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards were held on Sunday and the red carpet was all kinds of chic! Actresses, singers, fashion influencers and even supermodels set the cameras ablaze as they stunted in their best designer duds. But, Kerry Washington (and her adorable baby bump) stole the entire show! The Scandal actress uplifted a black cutout gown by Brandon Maxwell that boasts a floor-grazing train, a strapless neckline and a smooth silhouette. To complete her look, Kerry also rocked voluminous ebony curls and matching geometric nail art. Doesn’t she look amazing?
Kristen Bell was also on hand for the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards! Hands down, this was one of my favorite looks of the evening. While covering the red carpet, there was a theme that became quite evident: the stars love neutral and metallic tones. And, yes, it can get to be quite monotonous. Yet, when Kristen hit the scene, she was a breath of fresh air. Her Zuhair Murad floral-embellished gown was fit for a queen – the plunging neckline (and deep cut back) offered a bit of sass while showcasing a bit of skin, but the feminine ensemble still comes off as ultra glamorous. Hot!
Black-ish starlet Yara Shahidi took a cue from the menswear trend as she visited the 2016 Vanity Fair Social Club For Emmy Weekend in a Phillip Plein black and red printed blazer and matching flared trousers. With an expertly-tailored fit and the right amount of silver adornments, this teenage powerhouse left us all speechless. I’m calling it now: Yara is a rising fashion force and I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of her in the future. She’s everything!
Queen Angela Bassett was the epitome of #GOALS as she slayed the 2016 Emmy Awards red carpet in an airy Christian Siriano Fall 2016 mustard yellow gown, a freshly-cut bob and a gilded clutch. The 58-year-old style pro served up pure elegance as she accessorized with bold, statement jewelry and fabulous makeup. After receiving almost 9,000 likes via Instagram, it was a no-brainer that this icon be added to this week’s feature. Stunning!
Next up, we have the lovely Taraji P. Henson! Although she donned a different dress on the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards red carpet, the actress slipped into something a little more eccentric as she hit the stage to present the award for the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category. While channeling her inner Cookie, the fashionista gave all kinds of life in a two-tone sequin gown by Vera Wang! The lux gown includes long sleeves, deep bronze/burnt orange hues and a sensual front oval cutout. In my opinion, sequins are a girl’s best friend and Taraji proved that conservative looks can also be devastatingly sexy. Go girl!
Our girl Lupita Nyong’o is hot on the press trail for her new film Queen of Katwe (and she’s been on point for every single appearance)! For the Hollywood premiere, she chose to go the colorful route as she wore a flowy custom lavender gown from Elie Saab. Lupita took the simplicity of the dress and turned up the sartorial appeal by adding a matching headwrap, berry-stained lips and diamond drop earrings. Gosh, with the glorious combination of her flawless complexion and the softness of the dress, she’s solidified a spot as one of my weekly faves!
Now, tell us what you think! Who slayed? And, who fell flat?
America Ferrera uplifted a classic LBD with embellishment at National Geographic’s Years of Living Dangerously New Season World Premiere. For the occasion, she slipped on a Jenny Packham Fall 2015 Black Embellished Long Sleeve Dress:
Her dress was shown in jumpsuit form on the runway.
Fashion week is very much about the pomp and circumstance of the runway and celebrity, with shows often edging closer to an experience instead of the clothes. That absolutely wasn’t the case this season for Neil Barrett. His designs were among the most wearable and functional presented thus far for the entirety of Spring. Menswear-inspired blazers, bandeaus, moto-inspired leather skinnies, and practical kicks were all on the agenda for the designer.
Suiting took a utilitarian turn with oversized cargo pockets and military-influenced star pin insignia, while a retro vibe pervaded the assortment with gold aviators and collared leather jackets.
Stripes steeped the assortment in complete timelessness. Sneakers as anchors were refreshing, but the brand’s fans could easily slip on pumps for the office or a night out.
And hemlines were definitely reflective of the season. Barely-there minis were the absolute shortest, but nothing grazed the floor. All things vernal equal bare legs after all.
The fellas have been much more receptive to Barrett’s designs on the red carpet and while out and about than the ladies, but there are truly some stunners in here that need to be worn by Tinseltown’s finest. A simple, zip-front jacket with the aforementioned star pins seems like the right fit for Kendall Jenner and a high-waist denim and bandeau look feels perfect for Rihanna.
What do you think of the latest from Neil Barrett?
Her silk crepe dress features a white point collar, long sleeves, white pleated cuffs and hem, a red self-tie pussybow at front, darts at the chest, and a pleated skirt.
I live for her! And her style is impeccable.
If you’re up for the splurge, get Amal’s dress here.
The Birth of a Nation Hollywood Premiere went down last night with our favorite stylish stars in attendance. Though we’re absolutely still on the fence about seeing the film, a powerful assemblage of black stars such as these is a rare and beautiful thing.
So let’s stick to the fashion for now, shall we?
Gabrielle Union was a vision in a white lace Rodarte gown with a thigh-high slit. Hot!
Aja Naomi King looked ethereal in a white, feather-detailed Huishang Zhang stunner. This was fab.
Garcelle Beauvais went bold in a strapless cobalt jumpsuit. Gorgeous!
A short-sleeve, sequin embellished mini dress and cutout booties were on the agenda for Annie Ilonzeh. Nice seeing her back on the red carpet: she’s always hair goals.
Mr. Black Panther himself Chadwick Boseman kept it simple in black and navy. He’s so handsome!
Gloria Govan gave some flair to a simple, gray heathered maxi dress with a statement-making necklace. Simple and chic!
Nas was dapper in a striped suit.
A pared-down duo was on the menu for Jesse Williams—accented by a dot print shirt and suede shoes. He looks good in just about anything!
Colman Domingo was one of my best dressed of both the night and the week in a forest green Ports 1961 star-patterned suit.
Last, but certainly not least was Angel Parker in a curve-hugging, black and navy frock. Hot!
Who had your favorite look of the night? Are you planning on seeing The Birth of a Nation?
Alessandro Michele has firmly placed Gucci in the 70’s and his set for the Spring collection was a carbon copy of a discotheque from the disco-charged decade. The entire venue was pretty in pink: not unlike many of the designs on display nor the iconic Italian fashion house’s pieces since the raven-haired dynamo assumed his role at its Creative helm.
Though love might not be exactly what you were looking for when you headed out to Studio 54 back in the Seventies, it was certainly on the agenda for Michele. Multi-finger rings, the oversized pleat cuffs of cropped trousers, and the transparent collar of a high-neck gown featured red, embroidered “Loved” text, while a black and beige tulle confection boasted an embroidered heart with a dagger through it. Seemed pretty synonymous with the way the world feels about Gucci currently—madly in love with its designs though not always able to make that infatuation plain due to high-fashion price points.
We’re quite aware that florals for the season are far from groundbreaking, but it was fun to see the way the house riffed on them for Spring. A head scarf in the nature-loving print felt like retro at its finest when paired with the assortment’s embellished shades, while a yellow, single-button suit had the pattern embroidered on its flap collar and sleeve cuffs for a red carpet-ready spin on the classic pairing.
As Michele is wont to do, some of the looks were complete visual overload: utterly unwearable in their runway form but definite fun for over-the-top fashion lovers.
Suiting had a slew of iterations including a vest with a deep scoop neck and matching cuffed pants, a navy duo with orange trim and a longline blazer, a timeless black tux for the gents, and a short set with time-honored dragon embroidery.
Bows added a sugary sweet taste to the collection—accenting otherwise sultry sheer gowns, dresses already brimming with embellishment and fanciful detailing, the tie-neck of a striped lace blouse that could actually work for the office, and the collar of a contrarily preppy menswear ensemble.
Michele had a real love affair with sporty chic, contrast stripe leggings—yes, the kind you might wear to the gym or out on a weekend with an oversized t-shirt and sneakers. He placed the athletic anchors under a double-breasted, floral jacquard tuxedo-inspired dress, a ruched floral tunic, a blush babydoll dress, and a single-button, floor-grazing coat a in bow-accented lace-up iteration.
And how could we forgot the accessories? Sequin-embellished booties with barely visible peep-toes, lace tights with bow-detailed cutouts, flatforms given flair with snake motifs, graphic “future” emblazoned shoulder bags: nothing is off-limits in the world of Gucci.
Celebs are flocking to Gucci like never before—be it for the brand’s statement-making accoutrements or its jaw-dropping gowns. I fully expect to see fans including Beyoncé, Margot Robbie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kourtney Kardashian in these wares fairly soon at fashionable parties, movie premieres, and on the red carpet.
