So I’m in Lagos for GT Bank Fashion Weekend!
Yesterday, I popped by the Bridge, a fun lounge, bar, and restaurant located in Lekki 1 (8 Wole Olateju street off Admiralty).
After being blown away by the delicious food, drinks, and decor, I spoke to the owner, Tola Odunsi, who suggested I invite Fashion Bomb readers over for drinks. To which I said: Absolutely!
Join me tonight for cocktails and copious coups of champagne.
Ever since Tuesday, I’ve been in a social stupor. I’ve carried out my daily activities with a heavy heart and I’ve questioned the foundation for which the United States of America was built upon. I’ve also watched as this country violently erupt into what is now a threat to the lives of millions.
But, one thing is clear. Fashion is my fortitude. Writing is my sword. And, peace is etched within my soul. I’m beyond blessed to be able to use my talent for a greater good rather than merely dismissing my God-given abilities. So, today’s article is a bit therapeutic. This is my release from all the turmoil that has engulfed our precious nation. I also pray that I can relieve your mind from some of the everyday stresses that plague or hearts and minds. Thank you for reading!
Now, on a lighter note, let’s hop straight into the week’s most memorable celebrity looks!
The Annual CFDA& VOGUE Fashion Fund Awards were a welcome highlight to this tumultuous election week! The fashion industry’s best and brightest stars were in attendance including Godiva goddess Kelly Rowland and the chic Solange Knowles. Yet, it was Zendaya Coleman that turned heads in a Michael Kors navy crepe dress with white floral sequin embroidery. The ultra-sleek number also boasts an off-the-shoulder feature, dual side cutouts and a relaxed fit. Cute, no?
Winnie Harlow has quickly become one of my favorite style mavens of 2016! After her striking cameo in Beyonce’s award-winning masterpiece Lemonade, the charismatic supermodel has continued to make some huge strides. For her appearance at the 2016 Europe MTV Movie Awards, Winnie slayed all of our lives in a seductive black lace gown from Roberto Cavalli’s Spring 2016 presentation. The feminine piece combines a boho-lux aesthetic that radiates an effortless sophistication. Without a doubt, this woman is living proof that #BlackGirlMagic comes in all forms, despite the strict (and unrealistic) standards of beauty society set forth. I’m here for every moment!
Queen Erykah Badu brought her signature eclectic style to the 2016 Soul Train Awards red carpet as she donned a voluminous marigold Ralph and Russo gown, flawless makeup and tons of accessories. I don’t care what anyone says – this woman embodies the true understanding of pinpointing one’s personal style. You’ll never see this songstress rocking what critics may label “on trend” or “in” but, in contrast, you can spot her in a plethora of other stylish duds. I live for her sartorial fearlessness and the fact that she can make an oversized maroon wide-brim hat look like absolute perfection. And, shout-out to Jason Rembert for styling this iconic ensemble!
Songstress and dance extraordinaire Teyana Taylor was also in attendance for the 2016 Soul Train Awards in Las Vegas last weekend! The fashion fave was certain that all eyes were glued to her as she sashayed down the awaiting red carpet in a lavish sheer textured dress by The Blonds and black Givenchy ankle strap sandals. While raking in over 9,000 like on Instagram, there was no disputing her spot in our Look of the Week feature. Body: on point, face: beat to the gods, hair game: unmatched. She looks amazing!
Not many fashionistas possess the genuine ability to make everything they wear look like a million bucks. No, for some, the pursuit of the slay is similar to fighting a constant losing battle but Bonang Matheba’s got it down to a science. The South African girl boss served up fiery perfection in a curve-hugging masterpiece by my friend Weiz Dhurm Franklyn. She accented her bold frock with a classic low bun, matching crimson lips and icy diamond accessories. Let’s be real, it can’t get any better than this, right?
And, rounding out of fashionable nominees, we have the lovely Jourdan Dunn. The statuesque supermodel was on hand for the 2016 Europe MTV Movie Awards in a custom sheer detail long sleeve gown by Balmain. After examining this piece, I realized that Jourdan was the perfect muse for this tantalizing ensemble. With such clean lines and an impeccable fit, I’d think it’s safe to say that she was the gorgeous inspiration behind its remarkable beauty. Love it!
Ashanti showed off her co hosting skills at The Real Daytime wearing a Charles and Ron Spring 2017 Printed Dress:
The multi-colored babydoll dress features stripes from the shoulders to the elbows and white flared sleeves from the elbows to the cuffs, a green collar and a striped empire waist.
Ashanti matched her printed dress with red Louboutin’s on her feet.
Obsessed with this dress! Ashanti’s stylist has been slaying her looks for The Real.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association And InStyle toasted to the 2017 Golden Globe Award Season with a star-studded celebration last night. Embellishment, bold hues, prints, and loads of texture were all on display.
Let’s get into who wore what for the festivities!
Naomie Harris went bold in a yellow sequin Ralph Lauren Collection dress. Hot!
Ruth Negga and Valentino are a sartorial match made in heaven. Case in point: her latest pink beaut from the iconic Italian fashion house.
Christina Milian added a subtle sparkle to the night in an embellished number.
Gina Rodriguez showcased her curves in a $1,590 Hervé Léger Darja Dress. I love this spirited take on the classic bandage dress.
A simple Antonio Berardi LBD looked positively sensational on Jessica Chastain.
Ariel Winter followed Jessica’s lead in a ruched little black dress. This was fab!
Riley Keough certainly turned a few heads in a black and white printed Louis Vuitton dress with strong shoulders and cutout detailing. Not for the faint of heart, but she pulled it off.
I’m giving a total thumbs-up to Michelle Monaghan’s silver Off-White pleated maxi dress.
Cynthia Addai-Robinson was pretty in pink in a strapless, metallic-belted Romona Keveza dress. Simple and chic, no?
A C/MEO Collective chartreuse slit dress was on the agenda for Otmara Marrero. I need to see more of her out and about: her style is impeccable!
Another LBD was served up for the evening on Emmanuelle Chriqui. Beautiful.
Angela Sarafyan was on-trend in a vibrant, off-the-shoulder orange gown with a thigh-high slit. She nailed this!
Moonlight star Trevante Rhodes cut a fine figure in a grey, three-piece suit.
Jessica Parker Kennedy beamed in a black and royal blue, sheer embroidered dress.
Hailee Steinfeld’s asymmetric-shoulder embroidered top and matching ruffled mini were absolutely flawless.
Jenna Dewan Tatum added sultry red lips to her sheer Zuhair Murad jumpsuit. What’s a fashionable fête without a look from the designer?
Kate Beckinsale was radiant in a red off-the-shoulder Mugler dress and gold metal choker. She’s definitely one of my red carpet faves!
Her satin dress features a low scoop neckline, thigh-high slit, and adjustable cross back straps.
Her patent leather sneakers boast black contrast elasticated inserts, padded cuffs and tongues, back tab, a round toe-silhouette, and white chunky soles.
Cute!
If you’re up for the splurge, get Bella’s dress here and sneakers here.
Zoe Kravitz sizzled at the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them New York City Premiere, slipping on an Alexander McQueen Spring 2017 Black Sheer Embellished Web Lace Gown:
Zoe eschewed the runway’s choker, but did wear its statement-making drop earrings.
