Fashion Bomb Beauty Exclusive Editorial: Songstress V. Bozeman on Soul Music, Style, and Curating Her Signature Look

If you’re an Empire faithful, you’re familiar with V Bozeman, aka Veronica, whose vocals took us by storm on the “What is love?” single from the show. We got a chance to catch up with the LA songstress about her journey thus far. From fashion, to music, and hair, we covered it all.

Bozeman knew she wanted to sing from a very young age. She said, “Music is my first love, it chose me, and I have to submit to it.” Before her breakthrough on Empire, Bozeman was working with songwriter, Cee-Lo Green. During that time, she was introduced to record producer, Timbaland. She decided to reveal the visuals to her ‘Race Jones’ single, in order to get his opinion on the ballad, to which he was very impressed. So much so, he was compelled to pitch the songstress to Lee Daniels for his hit show, and the rest as you know, is history!

Rocking a bold bald ‘do has become the singers signature look. Though this is how we were introduced to her, Bozeman shares with us how she acquired her trademark look. “I had a full mane all my life, but along the way I’ve always been known to switch it up, but I never did it with my hair. I was in a girls group for so long, and when that ended, I just wanted to start over and grow a healthy mane. I never intended on going bald, but after I cut it off I was like, “I kinda wanna keep it for a minute!” She loved how her new cut made her feel and felt more comfortable with it than when she had hair; thus, her fierce persona was birthed.

She draws style inspiration from how she feels. “I’m not a person to follow trends, emulate, or imitate. I just do what I feel. I don’t like clothes to wear me, I like to wear my clothes.” She acknowledges that her bold appearance calls for less in order to create balance. One of her favorite brands is Gucci. She also loves vintage and mixing highs and lows from Zara & Topshop, saying, “It’s not what you wear, but how you wear it.”

In the spirit of women’s history month, we asked Bozeman what it means to be a woman within the music industry. She says, “It’s important to really be solid in our beliefs and represent in the best possible way we can. Women have raised me, and I’ve taken all the jewels that they have given me, and applied them throughout my life.” She believes that African American women, in particular, bear certain crosses that people will never understand. Therefore, it is important to tell our stories, and use our platform to inspire younger ladies, so they may carry on the legacy.

The songstress elaborates on her ideology of music. “Music should be soul music, things that touch your soul, that’s the difference between then and now. Now, there’s synthesis, it taints the real organic sound of somebody’s soul. You can’t hear it ‘cause all you hear is the computer and computers don’t have soul.” With the surge of emerging new artists, she is encouraged that a plethora of great music is on the horizon.

Next, Bozeman will be hosting an art gallery in LA, showcasing a variation of pictures and paintings that celebrate women, in honor of Women’s History Month. She tells us to look out for lots of drama coming our way via the new season of Empire. She’s working on a few movies set to release soon. Lastly, she is working on releasing a new album. “I’ve learned so much in these last few years, I’ve grown, I’ve become wiser. I’m getting back in the studio and pushing myself as hard as I can to get it all out.”

We wish you all the best and will be looking out for your soulful tunes!

The Fab List: 5+ Fly Bombshells You Forgot Were From Philly

Fashion Bomb Daily is headed to Philly!  With Conversations with Claire happening in the City of Brotherly Love, we figured we’d highlight some of our favorite bombshells that were born and raised in the unique city.  While the ladies have relocated and started lives in different parts of the country, there is no doubt about where their roots began.  Let’s take a look at 5+ Bombshells you may have forgotten were from Philly:

1. Draya Michele

This bombshell is in a league of her own when it comes to fitness and fashion.  Draya Michele defines body goals, for sure. Long before the mother of 2 became a cast member of Basketball Wives LA, she spent a lot of time in Philly.

Her love for fashion has made her someone to watch for on the red carpet.  Draya always highlights her best features when it comes to making a statement.  Simply put, she looks flawless in whatever she wears.

Currently living in LA, Draya has upgraded her career from cast member to model, actress and designer.

2. Eve

Her clothing line “Fetish” was a huge success in the late 90’s, she starred in the self-titled sitcom Eve, she had a chart-topping music career and made a name for herself as an actress in the Barbershop movies.  Proud Philly-native, Eve Jeffers-Cooper helped put the city on the map by representing through music and fashion.

Eve’s red carpet fashion is chic and flirty.  Her signature paw prints are almost always highlighted in every ensemble.

Eve took a break from Hollywood and headed overseas where she met her husband, Maxmillion Cooper.  Now spending time between London, New York and LA, the rapper/actress has resurfaced with movies, and she will be joining Gwen Stefani on the What the Truth Feels Like Tour.

3. Amber Rose

South Philly native Amber Rose has made quite the name for herself.  Known for more than her blonde buzz cut and curvaceous shape, the designer turned talk-show host has capitalized off of her platform by heading a feminist movement that stands against slut-shaming, rape and gender inequality.

You can take the girl out of Philly but you can’t take Philly out of the girl! Amber’s swag is unmatched.  Her love for high-fashion, androgyny and form-fitting garments has made her someone to watch for on the fashion scene.

Amber currently lives in LA with her son Sebastian.  The entrepreneur has numerous upcoming projects including her collaboration with Flirt Cosmetics.

4. Jazmine Sullivan

Vivacious songbird Jazmine Sullivan was born and raised is Philly.  Her powerful vocals lead her all the way to LA where she managed to dominate the charts with hits like, “Need U Bad,” and “Bust Your Windows.”

When it comes to fashion, Jazmine dons a classic look.  For the red carpet she opts for gowns that show off her voluptuous shape.  For performances, playful, feminine pieces work for her personality.

Gorgeous!
5. Jill Scott

Jill Scott has one of the most sultry, soulful voices of our time.  The northern Philly poet traded in her education at Temple University for a chance to explore the world of music.

Jill’s voice is as eccentric as her style of clothing.  Afros, jumpsuits, bold colors and prints; you name it, she’s worn it. No matter the ensemble, Jill is prepared with her best accessory- her confidence.

The mother of one has been nominated for numerous Grammy Awards but only took home three.  In addition to making hits in the studio, Jill caught the acting bug that has lead her to a variety of television and movie roles.

Looks like Philly is responsible for a lot of talented Hollywood starlets! Interested in seeing more?  Check out our gallery above!  For now, what do you think?  Are you loving our Philly Bombshells?

If you haven’t bought your ticket for Conversations with Claire, there’s still time!  Join Claire on March 18th,  from noon-3pm at Indigo Bleu Design and Culture Center (3870 Lancaster Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19104)for light bites, mimosas, and a discussion surrounding her new book, The Bomb Life! The conversation will be moderated by Power 99 DJ Mina Say What.

XOXO- Marsha B.
