Today, we have a special Breaking into Fashion interview with celebrity stylist and TV Personality, EJ King. Not only has he starred on BET’s About the Business reality show alongside Eva Marcille, he is also currently on tour with Chris Brown for his Party Tour as his resident wardrobe stylist.
Prior to getting on the road, we got a chance to catch up with EJ and get the scoop on his fabulous life. He goes straight into telling us about the days before all the glitz and glam.
He says, “I used to work 12 hours a day dressed in a white jumpsuit from head to toe making pacemakers with two other people in the room (who would’ve thought, right?).” What soon broke this cycle was a call to be an extra on the set of the movie Dreamgirls. He continues, “I asked my mom what she thought about the opportunity and she said I should go for it”. They both agreed that if anything were to transpire from it, he would take it as a sign and leave his hometown of Moreno Valley, CA to pursue a career in LA.
He says, “Once I got back to work they said they had to let me go because I didn’t take off properly”. Sure enough, he took that as a sign and moved to LA that same week. “A friend of mine who was a model, offered for me to work as her stylist on her shoots, and shared her one bedroom apartment with me so I could get my start”.
While working on his friends’ magazine shoots, her publicist asked if he’d be interested in working as a publicist and offered him a position as her assistant. He says, “She took me under her wings and taught me everything about PR.” King found himself working as a publicist for two years. He began to frequent circles with all of young Hollywood’s hottest stars and cultivated relationships with them.
As he started to gain more ground in Hollywood, his boss began to see more potential in him, “she thought it would be a good idea for me to work on the creative end and introduced me to King Magazine’s Fashion Director at the time, Seannita Parmer”. Not one to leave any stone unturned, King took the opportunity to intern for Parmer for a full year. He was able to assist with shoots and gained more visibility with potential clients.
From there, he was able to book his own clientele. “I ended up moving to Atlanta for two years to work with T-Pain”. His roster also includes Lil’ Wayne, Day 26, Nelly, and Chris Brown who he’s worked with for 9 consecutive years.
He remembers having to work with a large budget of $10K for the first time with the girl group, Sophia Fresh. He says, “It was an amazing moment for me because everything I had once dreamed about I was actually doing”.
His ultimate goal, “I want to have multiple businesses running that relate to fashion and beauty.” He has wasted no time with his business endeavors. He is now a partner for StarfireLA hairline owned by Chante’l Griffith.
For those who do not know, King also has ‘hairstylist’ on his resume. He was born into a family of hairstylists. He says, “Hair is something that made me come to life more. I got locs just to have hair. My mom told me I used to play in wigs all day long.” Looks like this recent hair collaboration is right up King’s alley after all!
His advice to those who aspire to do big things, “As children we love to dream, then once we become adults we somehow think that’s over with! Keep dreaming! Everything I once dreamed about having by the time I hit 30, I now have!” There you have it, never let your dreams die!

The Adeam top from their resort 2017 collection features a bustier attached to a collared shirt with a voluminous fabric knot that drapes along the side front. The matching skirt features a voluminous pleated parachute design with drawstring detail.
Olivia looked completely retro with her hair tied back in a tight bun and black sun glasses.
She looks absolutely PERFECT! I am in love with this ensemble!
You can purchase her ADEAM bustier here for $1,495 and the matching skirt here for $1,495.
What do you think? Would you splurge on Olivia’s ADEAM set?
Blac Chyna headed to Tao in LA dressed in an all-black ensemble that included tights, a leather moto jacket and Versace Sculpted Platform Sandals:
The black leather sculpted platform sandal features a gold-tone logo plaque, an ankle strap with a side buckle fastening, a platform sole, a high stiletto heel, a rounded-toe and a signature gold-tone Medusa coin detail.
I’m a huge fan of Blac Chyna’s toned down look. You can never go wrong in all black!
Her shoes are sold out but you can buy something similar here for $1,040.
The black bodysuit is constructed with unlined and underwired cups and crafted with a generous amount of fine sheer tulle mesh and spliced with sheer trimmed and scalloped lace.
Khloe left the studio after wrapping up a few scenes for her show, Keeping up with the Kardashians, which may explain her casual ensemble. Focusing solely on the bodysuit, I’d say it’s totally worth the splurge! I’d look great with a pair of slacks and a blazer.
Beyoncé released some pictures of her and Jay Z celebrating their wedding anniversary last year at the Grand Canyon on her site! For the momentous day, she was clad in a $1,600 Marc Jacobs Embellished Varsity Jacket:
Her varsity jacket features striped banded trim, contrast sleeves, a “Rainbow” chenille embroidered back graphic, front snap closure, banded collar, front welt pockets, and a slew of pins for added flair.
She says, “I’m originally from an East African nation called Tanzania.”
“I currently reside in Oakland.”
“I would describe my style as simple, modern and dressy.”

So you guys may have noticed, but we’re starting to do more exclusive shoots! Our latest comes courtesy of photographer Ishmil Waterman and Dapper Afrika, who styled Essence Magazine Editor Joiee Thorpe in his signature in-your-face style:
We had to touch base with Joiee to see how she felt about her Dapper Afrika experience.
About how the shoot came about, she wrote, “Honestly I was walking down the street heading to a press event and Dapper Afrika stopped me to take a insta pic and we connected. A random connection meant to happen lol. Then he said lets shoot and I agreed!”
She continues, “My style is very fashion/trend driven. I am super girly one minute then a tomboy the next. I’m a stylist myself and it’s very hard for me to give someone full control over how to dress me. When I met Dapper Africa I knew that this would be extremely different from my personal style, and I was open to that.”
” He has this very eclectic vibe and I was curious enough to step out of my comfort zone. I am so glad I did! It’s very cool to see yourself through someone else’s eyes.”
In case you didn’t know, Joiee is a Brooklyn born Bombshell who always aspired to be a Fashion Editor at a Magazine.
She worked at Marie Claire, Teen People, People Style Watch and In Style before joining the team at Essence. For any young person looking to work in fashion, she says, “Fashion is super diversified now and everyone’s differences make them unique! Know who you are and go after what you want!”
After over twenty-five years with J.Crew, Jenna Lyons has announced that she is exiting the company and her role as its Executive Creative Director and President. Though we aren’t exactly sure what she’ll do next—perhaps her own line or heading up a major fashion house—there’s absolutely no doubt that she is a force to be reckoned with and that she made the once workwear-focused brand one of the most beloved and fashion-forward during her tenure. While we wait for her next move, we thought back on five style lessons she taught us while at the creative helm of J.Crew.
1. Never be afraid to wear neon.
Whether it’s a pair of classic pumps or a flirty dress, Lyons’s embrace of neon was a refreshing palette cleanser. Bold coral hues, electric green, impossible-to-miss pink—nothing was off limits. Bright shades became a signature of the brand no matter what the season and showed us that making a statement really is a way of life.
2. Sequins are always a good idea—for both work and play.
Fact: you should always shimmer and sparkle if possible. Sequins were standard for Lyons who would splash them across everything from timeless trousers to everyday t-shirts. And she always offset them with more pared-down pieces like utilitarian jackets and skinny denim.
3. You can wear denim on the red carpet. And whatever you want to, really.
We’ve seen style icons like Pharrell and Kanye wearing denim on the red carpet now, though Lyons has been doing it for years. At the First Monday in May World Premiere, she paired a chic cape with raw hem cropped skinnies: an effortlessly cool ensemble if ever we saw one. Denim jackets, tuxedos, and ponchos are other non-traditional looks that she has opted for at various high-fashion events. Lyons’s lesson here? Confidence and great tailoring are the major keys of looking red carpet-ready.
4. Gender shouldn’t stop you from expressing yourself through fashion and beauty.
When a J.Crew email showcased the then Creative Director and her son bonding over nail polish, Lyons became a part of the gender identity conversation that fashion is exploring in a major way today, six years later. The caption of the message read, “Lucky for me I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink. Toenail painting is way more fun in neon.” The polish later sold out, demonstrating that you should never let society’s definitions of masculinity and femininity define who you are and how you choose to present yourself.
We realize this is a bit of a play on words given the feature of Everyday People’s Saada Ahmed above, but the brand completely embraced everyday stylish women, men, and those who identify with other gender identifies as their models. That casting method has since been adopted by some major fashion brands. Inclusivity is best!
